give a hundred and ten percent. 110%
absolutely impossible. we are not nuclear reactors. we are not rated at a specific wattage which can be overrated for a higher output.
the maximum effort one can give (up to the point of death) would be 100%.
coaches should cliche with, give about 95.43 percent. 5/21/2009 4:21:03 PM |

"The hardest thing to do in sports is hit a round ball with a round bat and hit it square."
1. "square" as used here has nothing to do with shapes 2. it'd be a hell of a lot harder if the bat was rectangular and the ball was a cube 3. it's not that fucking hard 5/21/2009 11:28:18 PM |

well its also hard to get it into one of the spaces where theres not 8 defenders
but i guess anything that people consistently do under 28% of the time would be harder... maybe like scoring in hockey, since goalies save like 90+% of shots?

I think it is amusing when one team has already advanced in the playoffs, and they ask them who they want to play, and the coach gives some "Oh both teams are really competitive and we think it'd be a great match-up with either team."
Like last year when the Hawks took the Celtics to 7 games and they asked Lebron James who he thought they'd have a better chance against. I just wish he would have said something to the effect that since the C's finished the season 50 games over .500 and the Hawks backed in 8 games under .500 as the number 8 seed, they would have to be stupid to want to play the Celtics. But alas, he did not. 5/22/2009 5:15:29 AM |

morons who say "baseball is too slow"
yes, very slow. which part? the 95 mph pitch or the 120 mile an hour hit?
or the part where the ball travels 325 feet to the wall in 3 seconds and back to home plate in about 8 more?
Let me summarize. hmmm, the ball has traveled from the bat, to the wall, and back to its point of origin in 11 seconds spanning 650 feet. i didn't major in math, but that's 59 ft/second.
football: no speed comparison basketball: they would need to take 8 timeouts to compute the math hockey: puck may travel that fast(er) but not over such a vast distance jai ali: don't really care 5/22/2009 2:13:23 PM |

my guess on the 'baseball is too slow' thing is that there's a lot of time between plays, not the speed of the few seconds during plays 5/22/2009 3:29:37 PM |

With some pitchers (Steve Trachsel, Dice-K, etc), the network could literally show a full length 30 second commercial between every pitch
That's over 100 30 second windows in an average start
Thats 50 minutes of downtime, and thats just 6 innings, and thats just one side of the ball
thats why lots of people hate baseball 5/22/2009 3:32:11 PM |

So I read that before reading the rest of the context of the discussion.
I was thinking that a lot of them looked pretty athletic to me, and why does it matter that they can't run fast?
Also, don't compare the down time of football to baseball. here is the difference : In baseball, there is downtime but the action following that downtime doesn't always result in excitement. Waiting 30 seconds to see a curve ball into the dirt is much different then waiting 24 seconds to see the next play in football, which will generally deliver something of merit toward the outcome of the game. Just my thoughts on it.5/22/2009 6:08:59 PM |

shut yo mouf
nah, baseball's boring, that's why i love it. you don't even have to watch it. you can sit there and drink and eat, talk, whatever...you'll know when something happens. or if you don't who cares, they'll show a replay before the next 2 pitches are thrown. football there's like 8 TVs on at once and you're tryin to follow all of them at the same time, not nearly enough time to drink your beer.

see, there is the problem. that curveball in the dirt DOES serve a purpose towards the outcome of the game. thrown to a worthless piece of shit, say, big floppy, david ortiz, that curve ball likely will be a strike to set up the batter later in the count or is an out pitch.
if the pitcher misses with it, say to a world class champion such as derek jeter, the count changes, the fastball is now likely and the fielders will have to adjust, the batter must adjust and the pitcher must hit his spot. every pitch affects the outcome of the game. you just have to be tuned into the nuiances of the game to notice.
football: me mongo, me run fast into other player. duherrrrrrrrrrr hockey fan: me likey frenchie. he have no teef and mullet like mine. hit the guy, uh, what are the rules, me like hockey 5/22/2009 6:16:35 PM |

You seriously want to start a "baseball is more sophisticated" argument? See that right there proves the point. When you have to start with the "you just don't get it" stuff.
How about that cliche, that certain sports fans are more sophisticated then others. Any sport can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it. The fact that you just went with "football big dumb animal run at each other" makes me discredit anything you have to say anyway. Anyone would agree that football is extremely complex for a variety of reasons that don't need to be all listed.
Get real, all sports can be analyzed to death. Fucking nuances of baseball. If you want to sit in front of the tv and everyone 30 seconds analyze how that last pitch that slipped out of the pitchers hand then that is fine, you enjoy that. The thing I agree with is baseball is great to go sit in the stands, eat peanuts, and yell at people. 5/22/2009 6:24:22 PM |

don't bust a blood vessle in your noodle. obviously all sports have some semblance of "planning" and things that lead up to others. i just happen to feel that it is most amplified in baseball. and BECAUSE of the downtime, the anticipation makes it attractive to a lot of people 5/22/2009 6:27:42 PM |
