I ended up going with the 2008 Liquid Force Trip 138 ($149.99)
and I got the 2008 Hyperlite Remix Bindings ($124.99)
I got them from a website called http://www.freestyleonline.com Total was $274.98 with free shipping! They are a board store out of Virginia. I was told I should have my board & bindings by this Friday or Monday.
I will let you know how I like it after the first time I ride it. 6/18/2009 8:43:24 AM |

its Trip son...I have the same board and love it.
Beaver you'll enjoy the board. I say leave the fins off, its a little slippery at first but it'll payoff in the end. 6/18/2009 10:47:33 AM |
Skack All American 31140 Posts user info edit post |
Taking the fins off is crucial for learning how to properly edge, but I usually don't recommend it until someone is pretty comfortable carving and jumping already. It's a little bit of a pain having to "re-learn" when you take the fins off, but people are usually straight after a couple of days without them.
I've met some of the guys from Freestyle. They sponsor a contest with Boats Unlimited up at Lake Gaston every year and bring tons of gear at super cheap prices. It was cancelled last year due to some old hurricane b.s. though. Hope they're back this year.

yeah, it was a 134. I finally broke down and bought myself a BobbyDigital sized board. A CWB (don't remember the model) 140cm. That and bindings was a little over $300. Probably could have got it cheaper online, but I don't get out to the in-laws' lakehouse often, so i grabbed it while i'm here for a week.

Finally got some good riding time this past weekend. Went out for 2 runs Friday night, Saturday morning, and Sunday evening. Mostly just worked on sticking the fundamentals over and over. Did a bunch of frontside and backside jumps and a bunch of wake 180's and half cabs. Now I gotta try to get those handle pass 3's down. 6/22/2009 11:29:23 AM |

bttt for the 4th. It's a clusterfuck weekened for boat traffic but i'm heading up there Thursday after work.
Hopefully i'll be able to get some riding in thursday night and friday morning before the party traffic sets in, and then again on sunday night after they all leave.
what's everyone's lake 4th plans? 6/30/2009 8:34:07 AM |

^^ I would, but my boat stays at Gaston.
^ Heading to Gaston. I doubt I'll even pull the wakeboard out unless I take Monday off from work. There's always a few huge parties to look forward to though and I'm sure we'll do some surfing.
Met some dude last weekend with a 26' Donzi powered by a Chevy 502 built by some race shop here in Raleigh. First time I've ever run 65MPH across the main lake in heavy traffic with a lot of big rollers and that thing just skimmed across it all like it was nothing. Insane.
Check these guys out if you get a minute...Awesome vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8kZx3O6lpE 6/30/2009 9:55:05 AM |

Hey Skack, where do you stay? My in-laws' house is on Lizard Creek.
Also, maybe someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. Not the best video, but you can see me failing to get up. Maybe something is obvious. Don't know if we'll actually try to wakeboard this weekend given how crazy it is likely to get out on the lake.

on first view, only about 1 minute in it looks as if there are three problems. 1) The boat isn't giving enough juice to pull you up out of the water. 2) You look like you are trying to 'help' it too much by standing, thus the board is sinking and you are falling over the front and 3) your toes aren't out of the water which helps the boat pull you up.
skack, what am i missing? 6/30/2009 10:02:18 AM |

+1 for a late Gaston Thursday arrival. Friday shouldn't be THAT bad out there. Saturday will be a fucking zoo. Sunday probably won't be much better at least during the day.
Only plan so far is to creep around the lake Saturday, lots of parties as mentioned before will be going on. 6/30/2009 10:05:02 AM |
Skack All American 31140 Posts user info edit post |
The first two things Jeepin4x4 mentioned are the main things I see. You're doing almost everything right, but you have to wait a little longer and let the boat pull you up. At the point that you're trying to put weight on your front foot and stand up the board is going too slow and you're sinking it. Keep your knees in and your arms out for about 1-2 seconds longer and I think you'll be fine. You're doing a lot better than the guy I tried (and failed) to teach last weekend. I think you'll get it the next time you're out.
The kid in the yellow life jacket has truly mastered the faceplant.
I'm on Pea Hill Creek. It's really not far from Lizard at all. I'll be glad to give you a pull sometime after July 4th weekend if you still need help. Adam Fields lives in Lizard if you want some really good instruction. Keep an eye out for him riding out there behind a white Centurion. Just seeing him ride is awesome. He has the house with a bunch of rails and banners hanging up on and around the dock. http://www.adamswakeboardschool.com/

Also, I highly suggest you guys skip the Eaton Ferry fireworks and head to the back of Pea Hill Creek. Much better show, much better crowd. They had skydivers the last two years right as it was getting dark followed by an awesome fireworks show synched to music. The guy that does it drops an insane amount of money on it. Just drive towards the back of the creek. It's just before the second bridge (if you count the bridge to the main lake as bridge #1). You'll know you're in the right spot when you see a giant flagpole and about 100 other boats floating around. 6/30/2009 10:13:13 AM |

in after the Adam Fields reference (somewhat surprised it took until page 2)
I had his mom as a teacher at some point, can't remember if it was middle or high school. She would talk about his wakeboarding exploits whenever there was a down moment in the class, which was constantly. He is good though, I've seen him out there.
Does anybody know who those guys are in the yellow boat (I think? no clue what kind of model it is, it looks pretty fancy) who spend ALL DAY LONG riding around wakesurfing blasting their music, which is generally god awful, every single weekend? I haven't been in the Big Stonehouse Creek area once without seeing/hearing them. 6/30/2009 10:14:54 AM |

Bobby, don't be afraid to yell at your driver and tell him to punch it. make sure your rope is tight first or you'll rip your arms off (not really). But sometimes it takes really punching the throttle and almost yanking you out of the water to get that feeling.
Trust me, last summer it took me about 17 times in a row of falling over like you to finally get up for a few brief seconds and realize what the feeling is like with getting up. People try to break it down in steps and when you are learning you try to do it step by step but the movement and actions are so fast its like one continuous motion. Don't give up. 6/30/2009 10:14:56 AM |

I don't know anyone with a yellow boat up that way, but I'm out on orange/black or navy blue/white Wakesetter VLXes up that way fairly often. And yes, sometimes they are blasting awful music. Don't blame me, I'm just along for the ride.

Anyone ever go to Harris Lake? My dad take his boat our there and I love to knee board. If my boat had more speed I think it would be more fun. I don't have a wakeboard though. I have done it a few times and I loved it. One day I would like to get one :-(
My dogs love the lake too... Jinzo has taken a crap in the actual lake a few times. But he likes to swim with me. 6/30/2009 12:40:30 PM |

A lot of people do that when they're first learning. I think it mostly comes from not having the confidence to lean against the rope. She just needs to straighten that front leg, stand up more, and lean against the rope a little. 7/1/2009 5:06:05 PM |

Sorry to hear that.
I wrecked hard twice last weekend. The first time was off a heelside 180. I cleared the wake and landed smooth, but the board spun out and I faceplanted right after landing. I thought I got rocked on that one, but the next one was way worse. I got up, immediately went for a toeside 180...Got a lot of pop and cleared the wake easily; pulled the rope for a late 180 and over rotated a little. My back and back of head slammed on the water so hard I bounced. Instant headache. Today is the first day this week that my hips stopped hurting.
Sometimes you just have to admit when you're not mentally there and just quit while you're ahead.

bttt. Not too much riding happened this weekend. Got a chance early Friday morning and rode for about an hour. I tried some ollies just to get a feel for them, face planted on my third one and just went back to riding normal and not really practicing anything.
Did quite a bit of tubing, had the cousins and neice/nephews all up so we spent several hours towing them around and battle tubing. Still looking for a bigger, more aggressive tube though. Hopefully can find a good deal now that the 4th has passed by. 7/7/2009 2:03:34 PM |
