I'm putting a beat down on this thing right now because people are stupid.

I was thinking of "a can" and 20Q asked "Is it White?" I said sometimes, but it was taught "No."

Assuming only binary responses, 2^20 maps to 1,048,576 different things. Considering the first question is "animals, vegetable or mineral" that triples the mapping, and there are probably some other tricks too.
