i have imitrex tablets AND shots AND relpax....didn't do a damn thing, usually they do work well though.
and no i don't go to the ER for stupid shit. my doctor sent me there b/c it was so bad. i didn't want to wait 9 hours in pain. annuyerisms(sp?) that start out as migraines kill people in my family, and that on top of having a known concussion and not being to take any meds b/c i was throwing them up....i think that's a better reason to go to ER than a sprained foot.7/5/2009 7:39:11 AM |

have you had a recent MRI/MRA or CT/CTA
to rule out a potential growing aneurysm?
esp since you have a family history of them? 7/5/2009 8:14:55 AM |

I didn't have a problem with my burn... They got me back there asap and it was full of stupid snot nosed kids. The only thing I didn't like was they tried giving me a shot of ib profen which didn't do shit. Then after applying silvadene the pain was 10 x worse - they gave me a shot of Demerol within 5 min and I was out the door in 20
The carteret county comment is so true!

I had a CT scan-it was okay.
When you come in with burns/bleeding(according to my nurse friend) you are a level 4 or 5 so you go to fast-track ER. when you come in and need and IV or scans, you are a level 3 which means you go to the main ER and are going to be there for a while, as in you are not an in-and-out patient they can just throw a cast/bandage on.
the annueryisms kill people in my family when they are in their 40's...i figure that's when/how i will go.

Well that explains it, I was told after burns are up there but wasn't aware of the levels. All the mothers glared at me for getting pushed to the front of the line!
But I hope you feel better my roommate gets migraines and when she gets one she's basically out of commission all day and night... 7/5/2009 12:02:28 PM |

^burns are easy to treat, so you get moved quicker. i guess if you had a really bad burn they would take you to the main ER if you came in an ambulance, like if you were in a fire or something.
i can't believe they tried to give you a shot of ibprofuen...wtf. you could have taken that at home! 7/5/2009 12:04:49 PM |

Yeah I told the dumb bitch that... Then after the silvadene made me hurt so much more, I started crying hysterically and the doctor asked if I wanted stronger and I yelled out "YES GIVE ME ANYTHING" and he was all .. then I got the Demerol.
They could have saved me a lot of pain had they given me that to begin with .. but afterwards I was happier than a pig in shit so I didn't care anymore

Demerol is good stuff if you have no opiate tolerance.
And yeah, IV ibu (I call it eeebooo son ) is a joke son. 7/6/2009 10:54:46 AM |

Yup... Although I don't think I would ever want it again except for extreme pain -- it was a really weird sensation and I barely remember anything after getting the shot. 7/6/2009 11:03:56 AM |

A little tip for skipping the wait, complain of chest pains and you'll be looked at with a quickness. Although not entirely ethical, it will definitely work. 7/6/2009 11:05:35 AM |

It seems like if they think you have internal injuries they will get on it quickly. Possible heart problems are probably going to be taken extremely seriously. So yeah, that would work I'd imagine!
Kind of like the time I got wheeled into the ER completely pale, sweating profusely and screaming/cussing at people about the extreme abdominal pain I was experiencing (Although this was legitimate, I wasn't pretending or anything).
They gave me two IV injections of hydromorphone just to shut me up. ] 7/6/2009 11:08:07 AM |

a regular CT isnt gonna show anything unless the aneurysm ruptured
a CTA CT scan with angiogram..... they shoot contrast dye as the table moves thru the scanner.......this causes the arteries in the brain to "light up"...... sometimes it will show the outline of a developing aneurysm........MRI/MRA A=angiogram..... can be more sensitive.
migraines and visual disturbances can be warning signs of a growing aneurysm, but some folks have no warning at all. The headache from a ruptured aneurysm is like no other kind of headache.... people often show up at the ER with the worst headache of their life, or sometimes its called a "shotgun" headache.
little tidbit of ruptured aneurysm aka subarachnoid hemorrhage trivia for yall
50% of people with ruptured aneurysms die before ever getting to the hospital.
last week my unit at work was full of subarachnoid hemorrhage patients.7/6/2009 12:40:54 PM |

There are also cluster headaches, which are known as suicide headaches. One of the few things that provides instant relief for a cluster headache is 100% oxygen. These are sometimes confused with migraines, but are distinctly different based on unique symptoms, like sweating on only one side of the face. 7/6/2009 12:43:54 PM |

^^thank you Mr. Smurf. when i get insurance back i will have one of those tests. now i'm all worried but can't go to my doc w/o insurance. normally i have no visual problems with my regular migraines, but i am now....where would i go to get one of those tests? just to rule out an aneurysm...if i have a developing one that would explain why i have had daily migraines for 6 years.... 7/6/2009 12:50:07 PM |

er thats ms smurf
did you have a neurologist?
if you dont you can find a primary care (family dr) to see first for your yearly physical, he can get you a referral to a neuro.
make sure you mention your family history of ruptured aneurysms.
Raleigh Neurology has a migraine clinic.
one of the ICU doctors i work with recommends Dr Rhonda Gabr at raleigh neurology.......she was one of his residents. I dont know if you need a referral for her practice or not, you can always call and ask. 7/6/2009 12:58:28 PM |

i don't feel like reading this thread, but i think i can accurately sum up how it went:
- someone complained about it taking so long in the ED - someone mentioned EMTALA - someone suggested that you complain of chest pain - (optional) someone suggested that you get seen faster if you come via EMS
yes, complaining of chest pain will get you back quicker. if it's obvious you are not in fact having chest pain (and you are complaining of it), your ED visit will be hell.
no, coming in an ambulance will not get you back quicker, unless there's something seriously wrong with you. helpful hint: if you come via EMS and we stick your ass out in the waiting room or stretcher triage, chances are you could have (should have?) driven yourself there.
yes, it's true that a person cannot be refused treatment due to their inability to pay (thanks to EMTALA). consequently, i'm sure you've noticed the multitudes of people that are in the waiting room at any given time that use the ED as their PCP.
general rule of thumb: if you aren't sure whether or not you should go to the ED, chances are you'd be just fine going to an urgent care center/your PCP instead.] 7/6/2009 6:34:19 PM |
