Allow me to quote Kurtz from Apocalypse Now as my response:

Quote :
"And then I realized...like I was shot...like I was shot with a diamond...a diamond bullet right through my forehead. And I thought, my God...the genius of that! The genius! The will to do that! Perfect, genuine, complete, crystalline, pure. And then I realized they were stronger than we, because they could stand that these were not monsters, these were men...trained cadres. These men who fought with their hearts, who had families, who had children, who were filled with love...but they had the strength...the strength...to do that. If I had ten divisions of those men, our troubles here would be over very quickly."

Easily . No other smiley comes close. I find myself using in many venues outside the Wolf Web.

For those who require some background, I had a blog called Second Issue where I mostly talked about comics. I retired it at the end of 2007. Here is why:

Quote :
"I don't have much of anything to say about the hobby. Let those still invested in it do the complaining.

Actually, there's the problem: Reading comics I liked turned into the hobby of following most of the major titles from week to week, and that hobby turned out to be expensive and not fun in the end. If I wanted to spend money on something I don't enjoy, I could join a fucking church.

Before you drop $2.99 plus sales tax on a 32-page book that's mostly ads and won't look good on your bookshelf, ask yourself if the content inside is worth more to you than a damn gallon of gas.

Have a nice year. I'll be in prayer for 2008, B."

I don't know about reviving it. I've actually stuck by my decision to not buy comics anymore. I don't have much to say about comics as they are right now that isn't just a bunch of pointless complaints about their content and quality.

Is there much demand for it? I didn't think anyone read it, really.

FroshKiller, I understand why you wouldn't buy comic books, but could you please clarify your position regarding graphic novels? By graphic novel, I mean a compendium of individual comic books that describe a complete story arc and which might take more than a couple of hours to read.

Probably not. That lady is, like, a hundred years old.

I'll buy a graphic novel if it's recommended to me and sounds like a good read. I'll probably pick up Warren Ellis's Crécy before too much longer. But that weekly slog to the comics trough to spend $3.00 or more on a goddamn pamphlet is through.

im on book 5 of 12 of the sword of truth. while it feels like LotR, this author is trying to steal everything he possibly can from star wars. its an annoying/interesting dichotomy.

***spoiler alert***
seriously, the main protagonist finds out the main antagonist from book one is actually his father in book two, and the protagonist responds, and i quote - "That's not true. That's not possible!"

while luke said "that's impossible!" i gotta say thats a rip off.

***/spoiler alert***

i say it can't hurt to read the first book, to see if you find it interesting. i like it. but i feel you could have some serious problems with the story...somehow i feel that might be the best selling point.

Frosh, why do you keep dwelling on 80s era music? It is 90s era rock that should be to what you came of age.

Evolution came out in 1979. ;P

My mom raised me on good jams. The best music ever recorded was recorded between 1968 and 1983, that magic slice of time that give birth to AOR and classic rock. I've got love for the '90s, don't get me wrong, but the '90s didn't give us Boston, Bad Company, Led Zeppelin, or Foreigner.

you were an english major

you also have skills in more technical areas like IT and software development

many would say those are an unusual or at the least uncommon combination of interests. do you have any comments on that notion, and also, do you prefer in any way one pursuit over the other?

In no particular order, I'm a big fan of nigiri sushi, pinto beans, and chicken & dumplings.

The closest I ever came to it was 10th grade.

Maybe the ways my interests manifest are uncommon. By that, I mean that maybe I express those interests and skills in ways you don't normally see. But I feel that it's all the same on a fundamental level: ordering mere data (or letters, or phonemes, or whatever) to communicate meaningful information. To me, a well formed sentence isn't much different in a qualitative sense than a well formed SQL query. A particular arrangement of words can sound beautiful, and a particular arrangement of instructions can be elegant; both are poetry.

I imagine it'd be the same for most people if they were just better acquainted with the theory of information. My mother has been a computer programmer and network administrator for basically my entire life, so I grew up with the stuff and had someone who could intelligently answer my questions about it. If everyone had that luxury, maybe there wouldn't be such a divide between "hard" knowledge (sciences) and "soft" knowledge (humanities).

Well, maybe it's because I'm not a particularly skilled programmer. Or maybe it's because the bit you're looking at was written for use in a particularly strange context with particularly strange constraints on my ability to be clever. A fella can appreciate poetry without being a poet, you know. Universal appeal of the mark of truly good art.

I'd like to move from Client Services (implementation and ongoing technical support) to develop. The usual career path here seems to be stick around in Client Services until you get your senior title then hopefully become a team lead. Eff all that. I'd rather get my hands dirty.
