some of my co-workers live on alston ave, north of the freeway quite ghetto actually, and have never been yet broken into.
sounds like some 'quality representatives of a particular minority' cased your place.
my parents have lived in durham for 22-23 years and have never had any problems. the only issue in the neighborhood was someone getting something stolen out of their garage while they were gone, the dumbfucks left the garage door wide open the whole week too... 7/10/2009 9:48:35 AM |

hmm.. I had break-in problems in raleigh, but not in durham.
it all depends on where you live. Durham just has more intertwining of bad/good areas. In raleigh, all the riff-raff are contained in specific areas. 7/10/2009 9:52:36 AM |

What was your incentive for moving into a shitty part of Durham? I guess I'm just confused as to how or why you'd ever volunteer to move to a shitty location if you're making money and stuff.
I mean, I lived in Durham throughout my childhood and I never had a problem. My parent still lives there. It's not a bad place at all, but like everywhere, if you move into the shittier parts of town you can expect to have more crime. 7/10/2009 9:53:08 AM |

housing is ridiculously cheap in those areas. but you really have to do your homework on the area in general, looking at crime rates and such of surrounding areas as well...
that said ever since southpoint got built and southsquare got torn down the gangs have moved north near northgate and such.
i still think the best way to deal with gangs is eradication.7/10/2009 9:55:43 AM |

Quote : | "I'd love to unload some rock salt into the face of an assailant." |
Quote : | "Well, depends on if they're breathing. And if they happened to be holding a deadly weapon at the time of discharge." |
I'm sorry man, but that rock salt bullshit is completely pointless, especially when you consider that even birdshot has been proven to have relatively marginal stopping power. Yes, it produces gruesome, HORRIFIC flesh wounds at very close range (Rock salt will not do this), but it cannot reliably reach vitals and the wounding effect dramatically drops off with increased range. So, unless you hit them at extremely close range in the neck and inner thighs with that birdshot they are probably going to live and it may not stop them at all, especially if they are someone who can essentially only be stopped via incapacitation for whatever reason (These people do, in fact, exist).
I wouldn't even consider the possibility of a rock salt load being lethal or even particularly effective at wounding unless you just get lucky and hurt them with the concussive effect of the shotgun blast or something ridiculous like that. Rock salt is beyond pointless for self defense.
The biggest reason I find it to be pointless is that you will not be treated "lightly" for shooting someone with rock salt. You will be charged as if you had shot them with buckshot or any other "real" load. A shotgun is still considered a lethal weapon even with "LTL" loads and you will be charged accordingly.
If you shoot someone in NC, you'd better be justified in killing them if you don't want to go to jail, and in that case why in the fuck would you want to have a gun full of rock salt?! If you're justified in killing them, that means your life is in imminent danger and you need real ammunition. Fuck some rock salt son. ]7/10/2009 10:03:05 AM |

Well, in which case, triple ault buck or slug, then. Of course, rock salt ain't lethal. But it sure as fuck hurts. And if it incapacitates them long enough to weigh them down with a couple of car batteries...etc, etc. 7/10/2009 10:51:38 AM |

That really sucks. You may have seen this before but you can use the Durham Crime Map to check out how bad an area is. The North Roxboro/East Club area shows about 50 burglaries in the past 11 months. Looks like a typical Durham area.

a sabot slug would probably travel all the way through an intruder and still be lethal to anyone behind them. If you managed to miss the intruder, that slug might travel through the wall of your house, your neighbors house, and still be lethal. If you miss with buckshot, it won't have enough energy to make it much further than through your house wall. 8/14/2010 1:00:53 PM |

Quote : | "Coach K had put together the perfect Duke team, the only thing he was missing was a good shooting guard. He had scouted all the high schools, even the junior colleges, but he couldn't find a ringer guard who could ensure a NCAA Basketball title.
Then one night, while watching CNN, he saw a war-zone scene in Bosnia. In one corner of the background, he spotted a young Bosnian soldier with truly incredible ability. He threw a hand grenade straight into a 15th-story window 200 yards away - ka-boom! He threw another hand grenade into a group of 10 soldiers 100 yards away - ka-blooey! Then a car passed, going 90 mph. Bulls-eye!
"I've got to get this guy!", Coach K said to himself. "He has perfect aim and I can train him to shoot baskets!"
So, he brings him to the States and teaches him the great game of basketball, and Duke goes on to win the NCAA Basketball Championship. The young Bosnian is lionized as the Great Hero of Basketball, and when Coach K asks him what he wants, all the young man wants to do is to call home and speak with his mother.
"Mom," he says into the phone, "I just won the NCAA Basketball championship."
"I don't want to talk to you," the old woman says. "You deserted us! You are not my son."
"I don't think you understand, Mother!" the young man pleads. "I just won the greatest sporting event in the world. I'm here among thousands of my adoring fans."
"No, let me tell you," the mother retorts, "at this very moment, there are gunshots all around us. The neighborhood is a pile of rubble. Your two brothers were beaten within an inch of their lives last week, and this week your sister was raped in broad daylight." The old lady pauses, and then tearfully says, "I'll never forgive you for making us move to Durham."" |
