yeah, generally when people get hurt/collapse then think they don't need medical attention, you call the dr anyway. they collapse for the most part b/c there's something wrong with their head and aren't the clearest of thinkers at that time. i would have called regardless.

My husband got very sick not too long ago, and was spewing from both ends. While on the toilet, he thought he was going to vomit, and passed out when he leaned over the tub. I heard him fall, walked in, and he was making the most distressed choking noises. He was too weak to get up on his own, and his face was in the back corner of the tub. I had no idea what the hell was going on, other than that it sounded like my (brand new!) husband couldn't breathe right, and that wasn't good. At first, I didn't even know if he was conscious.

I got him out, put him in a recovery position, and went and called 911. While we were waiting for EMS, he begged me to wipe his ass for him, and I felt so bad so bad for him.

He had passed out from dehydration. We both had known all day he was getting dehydrated, and I had been taking care of him as best I could, but he was puking up everything. I'd started him on sucking ice not too long before this happened.

I agree with your wife: one of the scariest experiences I've ever had. It was awful. But they watered him and sent him home with meds.

Thanks, I'm glad it's all well too. I am usually really good at knowing my body's limits. I just misdiagnosed myself that day. Thankfully, she was there to catch my fall, literally. And this wasn't the first time someone's passed out on her, so her past experiences kept her from freezing on me or going into scary shock mode until after everything was okay.

This past winter, I had a guy try to kill himself by filling his car with exhaust fumes. He had rigged a hose through the back window. I didn't want to break the window and scare him so I ended up talking to him for about 5 minutes before he cut the car off. Kept talking to him and got him to come out.

At the hospital, the doctors said they had never seen someone come in with that much carbon monoxide and still be alive. I ended up talking to him for awhile and he kept talking about the guy who helped him; he had no clue it was me.

It never occurred to me to make fun of him When he is sick, oh, my god, he is the most pathetic (but still adorable!) thing ever. I'm pretty evil, but even I can't make fun of someone when they're as pathetic as he gets. Think about how toddlers get when they're really sick (and not just sick): totally listless and still, glassy stare, silent, when they do talk, it's quiet, and a little whiny, but not too much b/c it requires effort to whine...like that.

I'll never make fun of someone being sick and shitting their pants: I did it once in HS. I sneezed and filled my underwear. Awful.

When I was going to work early one morning in 2007, this asshole came flying up beside me and almost cut me off. He sped up and I slowed down.. when I came over a hill (this was on 440 going towards Knightdale), he had just side-swiped the van only a little bit in front of me. Her van had stopped rolling right as I came up to it... Myself and a few others got out and a girl started to call 911.

She was thrown from her van, and the front right wheel landed on the upper half of her head (the wheel was bent in a little so it was almost like it was pinching it down)... By the time I got out of my car, her blood was all the way across the lanes (her van was the second lane from the wall). These guys there lifted up the van and yelled for someone to pull her out.. so I just grabbed her legs and did it. A nurse on her way to WakeMed stopped shortly after and helped her until EMS got there.

The man drove off immediately after the wreck, but they caught him. He was drunk and also had coke (I think) in his system, as well as a previous record (from what my friend told me). I went and saw the lady in the hospital after seeing her name on the news and she had to have surgery but she lived.

All I can say is that if you ever come up on a wreck that just happened, please stop -- you never know how important you might be to that person's life.

I've pulled multiple drunks out of the water while anchored up on masonboro island. There's always drunk idiots there that think they can out swim the current.

I also helped a couple guys out one time whos sail boat was sinking. This was in January and I just felt like taking the boat down the ICW to get out of the house for a bit. I think I was the only boat out there, it was freezing. Anyways, I came up on a 30' sail boat from Maryland with 4 guys on it. They had veered off the channel and stuck the keel hard into a oyster/sand bar. I tried to tow them off the bar but their boat was so big it was swinging my boat around and back into them. One of the guys tried to hold my boat off with his foot and his ankle got crushed between the two boats. Pretty nasty, I heard it crunch his bones. After all this they started having electrical problems and everything shorted out. Ends up there was a leak somewhere and it fried their electrical system. The extra water weight was causing the boat to run deeper and its probably why they had hit bottom. At that point I just put out a call to the coast gaurd and waited with the boat until they arrived. I didn't save their lives, but I helped them out some I guess.

i know someone with a good story...

a really good friend of mine suffered a severe head injury. she was at this bar with her boyfriend and while walking down the stairs to the lower level of the bar/club, she missed the first step (due to being drunk) and went down the stairs head first landing on her neck. her being drunk, likely saved her from an even more serious injury or even death. she threw up blood the next morning and never went to the doctor. fucking stupid.

not even a month later, she was commuting back from where her boyfriend lived at the time and heading to work. it was about a 2.5 hour drive so she left super early to make it to work on time. she was tired and the back roads of illinois don't exactly have the biggest shoulders. she went slightly out of her lane and hit gravel, lost control and wrapped her little toyota around a utility pole. (pole on passenger side)

the first two people to the scene were a nurse and a doctor (what are the chances!) and there was a ton of blood, so if a random had stopped, they might not have been must use to her because of graphic nature. she was in the hospital for days and was basically worthless for months. she was unable to work, literally slept 18 hours per day and had no appetite. she had to have multiple procedures to get the glass from the accident removed from her scalp and forehead.

post accident, she suffers from insane migraines, excessively sleep walks/talks/shouts and the doctors said if she has another injury to her head, its not going to be good.

so the doctor and nurse for sure played a big part somehow. it was so early in the morning (between 4-5am) that it was still dark and hardly anyone on the road. who knows how long she would have been there before someone realized someone was in the car. and with the amount of blood, who knows how much would have been lost before she was found.

he said it was "quiet" down there and he was just trying to relax. no idea how long he was there.. someone partying with us mentioned he went outside and had mumbled something about swimming so i ran down there and jumped in half naked lol. stupid fucker.

I've had stuff like this happen before, inexplicably. The only time it was really a problem was when we were in the hospital visiting grandma before she passed away (I didn't know she was near death, everybody else knew this but me). While I was in her room and we were just saying our little hellos and such I just suddenly felt the pressure in my ears go wonky, got really dizzy, started breathing irregularly, then started to lose motor control in my neck. My older bro (not oldest, that's how I differentiate between em) got a decent hold on me after I said "something isn't right" or something like that and walked me down the hall to the men's room at the end of the hall. Halfway down the hall everything went white and I completely lost control of the muscles in my neck (was looking at the ceiling and couldn't move my head and could see the ceiling moving with lights going by, but everything was all washed out white like you'd see in a dumb videogame, lol). I kept walking myself down the hall without thinking, and my breathing started to steady as we went down the hall (I think the air was a problem, like an allergen or an excessive presence of nitrogen/oxygen or something in that room). By the time we got to the bathroom I started to see again and regain control of my muscles in my neck and "dry burped" like I was gonna puke, but that stopped after a few seconds. Some cold water on my face and some moving air and I was good to go (the air was so very still in the hall and the room where grandma was staying). If my bro wasn't there to catch me and lead me down the hall I might've collapsed on that floor and hit my head on something on the way down.

There's also a number of times that I've been helped by my parents and my brother(s). Since getting diabetes I am amazingly vulnerable to stomach viruses for some damn reason. I get them, get dehydrated and become too weak to move very far before I know it, and then I have to go to the hospital. By the time I've made the decision that it's a proper stomach virus and I can't deal with it without going to the ER I have needed help from somebody to get to the car and from the car into the hospital. The last time I was at the beach and had to go down a number of flights of stairs to get to the car, and they were a big help.

I go from being fairly strong to being completely exhausted and useless with a moderate amount of dehydration. I credit the people who have helped me each time as having saved me from excessive suffering or possible death (it's amazing how quickly my mental faculties go to shit and how I feel as if I'm about to pass out).


As for saving other folks' lives? Hm... Well, the one time a car accident happened right in front of me I stopped and kept an eye on them and helped them look for one guy's sunglasses before help arrived (was some cowboy in a corvette in RTP who lost control and slid into a power pole, somebody in the garage posted about it and I gave my $.02 in there). A car of people stopped and then drove off after about 3 minutes. I thought that was a bit despicable considering they didn't do anything besides gawk and then pull off. I didn't call 911, just placed my car by the road with my hazards on and stayed about 4 ft away from the driver at all times. He was an older guy and based on the look on his face and how he was acting I thought he was about to have a medical problem (I'm not trained on that stuff, he just looked like he was in distress). A cop pulled up behind me about 5 minutes later (nobody called 911, which I should've done looking back, but I was in awe just seeing their car wreck and was in a daze myself when I was there asking if they were alright). They were OK and it was a happy enough ending for everybody but the driver (ouch, my insurance) and the corvette (waste of a nice, new car).

I did also talk to a couple troubled kids online (that were my age) way back when. They just had family problems and said they were going to kill themselves and had made plans on how they were going to do it, etc. I just talked to them about it back and forth until they felt better and changed their minds, and they credited me with having saved their lives. I think it was just a cry for help situation, but I've been depressed and I've also been in situations where I started planning my own suicide, so I wouldn't say that some credit wasn't due. Mostly just kids with nobody to talk to who were about to try to do something stupid.

I've saved my niece from a swimming pool; I was standing beside the pool and she fell in, I had to jump in fully clothed (boots and everything) and pull her out. Its not easy to move around in a pool with boots and jeans on.

I've also caught her several times, preventing her from falling from great distances, I'm not sure if that counts or not though.

Oh here's one I just remembered. When I was in HS, I used AIM's "friend finder" service to talk to random people from all over the world. One time, I found this one girl in Texas. She said that I gave her hope and made life much more pleasant day by day. She says I stopped her from another suicide attempt just because she looked forward to talking to me each day. Even the small things like talking to someone (even if it's random) can help save a life when you least expect it. We still chat now and then (it's been 6 years).

Why does this not surprise me? I remember quite a few years back, wife, stepson, and I took a little day trip to Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach, and we were down at the south side, at the inlet. Well, you know what the current's like. We're at the point on the sound side, and happen to notice a big crowd in the sound and an empty boat running wide open in circles. Go figure.

Next thing we know, Jeremy yells out. He'd been wading and playing in the water, and the current had caught him. Wife went in after him, and I go in after her. There's a deep hole there where the current has swept it out, and next thing I know she's treading water with no footing. I get to Jeremy and manage to get him calmed down so he's not trying to crawl on top of my head and push me under...and tread water to keep us both up. Fully clothed. By the grace of God, we drift back and all of a sudden, there's sand under my feet where none had been before. I got him to shore and went and grabbed Beth.

I tell you this: there's no sidestroking in a stiff current with a victim in tow AND all your clothes on...especially when said victim is a middle school child panicked out of his mind. I might have saved him, but somebody...something saved me. I was ready to bite the bullet and cash out but not before I tried to save him. Nobody else in sight, so we were on our own.

when i was 17 i was driving on the highway and a woman almost hit me on her way off an exit ramp. she hauled passed me and then i saw her drive off the road and hit a tree. i pulled over and went over to the woman's car. another guy was walking over there with me. we managed to get her out of her car carefully. she had just had two hip replacements (not sure why she was driving) but had passed out while driving.

so we got her out, and pretty much carried her out since her hips weren't working very well. we knew we needed to get her away from the car because we could smell the gas leaking and weren't sure what was going to happen.

about two minutes after we got her to the other side of the road her car blew up.

if we hadn't gotten her out, she probably would've died.

I was about 6 or 7 and playing in my front yard. Our house was on the main road. Some guy pulled over and got out of his car and was asking me for directions. Our town was a population of maybe 1,000 and "stranger danger" wasn't really emphasized, so I didn't really know what was going on til he suddenly grabbed me by my arm and started tugging me. I started screaming.

Our 5 year old black lab, Barney, came bolting around the house. He jumped the guy and started tearing into him. Guy let go of me and ran off. My dog followed him up to the road, then came back to me like nothing happend.

I freaking miss that dog, by far the best friend I ever had.

i saved a kid that was drowning when i was 15. he stepped off a ledge in the lake and sank straight down. i happened to be close to him and was able to get to him quickly.

i pulled a guy that wrecked his harley out of a ditch and treated him for shock and gushing blood from his wrist until paramedics got there. i then got to ride his harley 2 miles to his house since he had to go to the hospital and his wife could not drive a motorcycle.

i pulled a lady from a car wreck that smoking and later caught fire less than 2 weeks ago. she was the driver and about 300lbs. i had to get her out of the drivers seat via the passenger door while she was for some reason unable to help do it her self. she was so fixated on the smoke and freaking out. the other people who stopped to help me were to busy screaming and worthless to me for getting her out.

in every occasion the people around me where freaking out, yelling, and screaming at each other. i am totally amazed at how people can not control their emotions in a time of crisis. think quickly, act fast, and dont worry about what is around you. just do what you have to do.

I called the doctor to come in. She was really, really bad off, but they saved her. I don't know what would have happend if I had left to go the caffeteria like I was about to do...

when i was probably 5 i was left in the car while it was running while my dad ran into the house to make a phone call. i think my little sister (probably 1 at the time) was in the car as well. i crawled into the front seat, managed to shift the car into gear, and it began to roll forward. dad saw this out the window and ran out and got in the car before it rolled far. it'd be a stretch to say he saved my life...because the drive way was pretty flat and there was a big flower pot in front of the car. so worst case i think the car would've rolled about 10-15' before coming to a stop.

that's about the only thing i can think of though.

I don't know if I would have died... when I was 8 or 9 I was cutting through some woods and a neighborhood to get to my friends house. These 3 dogs come upon me and being an avid animal lover (like I seriously thought I communicated with animals) I decided to pet them when they approached, I remember petting the largest one because he reminded me of the little rascals dog because he had a circle around his eye. They bit the shit out of me, chewed up my legs and arms and a neighbor saw me and brought out a baseball bat and kicked the dogs and that's all I remember. My parents were very grateful and so I had to go visit them every so often and thank them, although I was incredibly shy and had no clue what I was supposed to say.

his wife invited me over for tea a few months later, that was painfully awkward, but to this day I am grateful that he was there

I have never saved anyone's life, but I have first aid/CPR training and I feel like I can function in high stress situations, so I guess that is a start. I am also hyper paranoid that something will happen around me so I to calm down I will find exit strategies and map out the nearest first aid supplies just in case

I thought of another. i was probably 20 and was in college at the time. Me and some friends were drinking and grilling out while watching some game. As the night went on, I got progressively more drunk. We had cooked hamburgers and put the leftovers in the fridge. You know how burgers get really dry and crumbly if they go in the fridge? Well I decided to eat one and started to choke. In reality, it probably wasn't that bad. And had I been sober I may have been able to manage the situation on my own. But I was hammered and started to panic. My eyes were watering, couldn't breathe, and couldn't get my friends' attention. Finally I get his attention and he does a kind of Heimlich maneuver on me and dislodges the burger. I was freaking out at the time. And my panicking surely made it worse. But I was very thankful to not be alone when that happened.

In rural Botswana, I started crossing a street and looked the wrong way before I started walking. Somebody grabbed me by the shirt and pulled me back, and a big truck went flying by a second later. It would have been very nasty if not fatal. To the [old] person that made fun of Bridget, it's just something that happens that you don't even think of. In London, there are words painted on the street by curb cuts telling you (the tourist) to look right. It happens all the time.

In Romania, two backpacking friends and I had rented a car in October. We tried to drive the Transfaragasan pass, starting from the south. We made it to the top, went through the tunnel, and came out on the north side in a complete whiteout. Thor (real name) and I were actually thinking of driving down the mountain but Patrick said no. We turned around and it added about 3 days to our trip to go the long way around the Carpathian Mountain ridge. In retrospect, I have no idea what the hell Thor and I were thinking as I am 99% certain we would have died. We had a piece of shit Renault and there were guardrails on less than 10% of the road. In my mind I still credit Patrick with saving our lives.

A boy about 10 years old was playing with his truck and crossed the street in front of me in Durham County a few years ago when I was on my way in to work as a server for brunch. His obese mom ran (slowly) out into the road to try and save him. It was just on the other side of a hill and around a corner. I reacted instantly and stopped short of both of them by a couple of inches. If I had even been the least bit distracted or any more sleepy they both would have been dead. That's the closest I've come to saving anybody else's life.

I had to perform the heimlich on someone in a Subway about 10 years ago or so. I was the closest person to him and nobody else stood up to help so I went ahead and did it. It worked almost right away, and after I asked the guy if we was ok to which he responded yes and he sat back down to calm down and drink some water. I was honestly shaken up also as I had no idea if I would be able to help this guy.
