Ron Paul was pretty close to my ideal presidential candidate. If someone else ran that held similar views but was slightly more charismatic, that would be even better. Becoming president isn't just about the issues, unfortunately. It's about winning the vote of the average American idiot who doesn't know shit about shit and doesn't care to find out.

Legally, we need a constitutional amendment to even have the US Air Force, and to delegate the authority of it's command to the President. I don't think that a strict constructionist interpretation of the Constitution is even possible today.

people forget that Madison suggested doing this in the case of the bonus bill, which would have provided federal funds for the building of roads, canals, and such. how expansive this allowance would have been is questionable, but under the current constitution as it stands, the provision of services by the states is allowed, prefered, and largely good. i'm not against providing public services in the least but they should be decentralized as much as is practical without giving us some stupid libertopia where natural monopolies are "not true" and people believe it's possible to have a bunch of competing roadways with no regulation except invisible hands and Reason and doctors freely just giving out endless health care to the old and poor like in the 19th century when people were superhuman.

to get back on topic, the constitution is fine, but if we're going to follow it strictly, we need to stop thinking of ourselves as a united republic as much and encourage state independence and state provision of public services, but as long as guys like mark sanford run the show, i'll be glad that the feds can at least pick up the slack.
