That's what made it so retarded.
I think the reasoning was that regardless of whether University funds were actually being used, the perception to the general public would be that the University was spending frivolously on a big trip to Ireland in the middle of hard economic times and the Easley scandal.
And apparently being afraid of how we would be 'perceived' by a general public supposedly too ignorant to get the facts on the trip was enough reason to axe the whole thing.
I know, retarded. But highlighting the ludicrousness of it all by someone going to the paper was enough to embarrass the administration into rescinding that cancellation.
