i was raised at southern national. we were there a lot. my dad built motors for john whaley in what they used to call the super stock class, if you remember the name. we built some pure stock motors too. also built ford 9" rears for a ton of cars out there. built several for junior mewborn, the famous cone-kicker.

there's a PASS South race coming up at Southern National in a few weeks. i'm gonna try to go. should be awesome. SNS is pretty much Bristol minus 1/10th of a mile. i saw kurt bush testing out there one day several years ago.

we built whaley's motors the year he won the super stock track championship. also had a pure stock title won that same year w/ our motors.

[Edited on August 10, 2009 at 10:58 PM. Reason : there's also hickory and jacksonville. do they still have the track up near wilson?]

damn

john whaley used to dominate.

i havent been out to coastal plains, little too far of a drive for me.

try to go watch the uara and pass series though.

went to caraway a few weeks back and watched a 5,000 to win late model race that was pretty good.

i just try to go to the big races when i can

honestly if the rules were not gay as fuck in f1 and there was more competiton, I would watch more. there isnt really anything fun about watching 14-21 guys on a 4 mile track, and if they so much as scratch on the car the race is over for them, those car are so aero sensitve its not fun to watch.

I love bikes as much as the next person, but there really isnt a grass roots bike class(to my knowledge), I see track days, and novice type classes, but again, back to the level of competetiveness(sp) just isnt that exciting to me.

but feel free to talk about it, thats whta this thread is kind of about

i forgot about robersonville

yeah, whaley is/was a chassis genius. he would have the car so hooked up through the corner that we just couldn't build motors that could handle that kind of sustained rpms within the super stock rules.

do you remember the night that he popped a motor in practice, went back to the shop, swapped in an old motor that was sitting on the shop floor, unloaded the car outside of the track, pulled in through the outer gate, started dead last, and won by half a lap? that was our motor he broke

to put things in perspective, my dad was building motors and doing set-ups for a team of him and his buddies and they ran on wayne county speedway back before it was ever paved. now they have a drag strip and they put dirt on top of the asphalt and the circle track is for sale.

my mom won a powderpuff race out there when it was dirt with a broken axle and only one wheel pulling.

County Line Raceway is in Elm City, not Wilson. And yes, they're still rubbin' and racin' out there.

my "home" track was east carolina and we call 4 cylinders super stock 4s and the pure stocks are what the kids run.

back in the early 90s dale jr ran a late model sportsman there a few times

i'm used to having two 4 cyl classes. stock 4 and modified 4.

so in yours, stock 4 = pure stock?

pure stock to me was the class w/ hydraulic cam 350s and automatic powerglide transmissions

[Edited on August 10, 2009 at 11:22 PM. Reason : east carolina is robersonville, right?]

it's cool to hear someone use the terms late model sportsman and late model stock. those have pretty much been dropped across the board now.

[Edited on August 10, 2009 at 11:25 PM. Reason : ^yeah, it was a pretty cool class. they changed the name to street stock. late 70s camaro bodies]

yeah, its a little strange but thats how they have always done things

back when bombers were super popular, they used to have so many bombers on sat nights that they would have to run 2/3 races of just bombers

i guess ucars are whats in among cheap entry level classes now

[Edited on August 10, 2009 at 11:27 PM. Reason : yeah ecms is in robersonville, it used to be the place to be in the early-mid 90s]

i'm starting to kinda like keselowski. he's got a good attitude.

that was good to me

haha yeah

i would love to see some of these guys get out there in late models at a local short track and just take their frustrations out with their fenders and then throw some punches afterwards. they're too scared of having points docked to behave like they did back in the day (the way it should be)

hell yeah. can you imagine having the busch brothers, jr, tony stewart, vickers, the ambiguously gay duo jimmie johnson and jeff gordon, robby gordon, and mr. excitement jimmy spencer all thrown out on wake county speedway in some limiteds or something? that would be awesome. go ahead and have a boxing ring set up for afterwards. who else could we throw in that race?
