On the whole ashkenzai debate, the jewish community and faith fully recognizes anyone that converts as being wholly jewish. Also, historically and philosophically speaking, all jews became jewish. If Abraham was the first jew and he didn't become jewish until god spoke to him and told him to change his name and his wife names and follow him, then wouldn't the first jew in fact be an ashkenzai jew?

WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG.

I'm going to clear this up right now. As the terms are popularly used now, there are three ethnicities of Jews. Ashkenazim are white, from north and west europe. Sephardim, literally meaning Spanish, are "olive" colored and from Mediterranean areas (Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Morocco, Tunisia, etc), and more recently has come to include central and south america as well. Mizrachim are "easterners." This originally only referred to Middle Eastern/Arab Jews but is now used to describe south and east asians as well (there are more Indian and Chinese Jews than you would think).

They are all "real Jews." Judaism is not a proselytizing faith, we don't go out looking for converts. If others come to us, we don't turn them away, but conversion is a long and tough process (you have to mean it). Any rumors of one ethnicity being the cause of a mass conversion is just a rumor hiding racism.
