those in the lower picture are called "enokitake" or enoki or golden needle in english

they are grown in the dark and in a high CO2 environment to make them etiolated

haha I had to look that up. I only know those by the name bunapi. I actually like the brown ones better.

It's sad, Japan sells a bajillion different mushrooms in the supermarket but I'll never know what to call them to find them for sale in America

i don't know my mushrooms very well...i thought the brown-topped ones were still white beech, but grown and/or treated a bit differently

I think they're a different crossbreed or something. I know the white ones

are only sold by that company in Japan, so I'm guessing they have rights to them. The brown ones are sold by a bunch of companies though.

Nope, they're just like the bunashimeji but white.

[Edited on September 3, 2009 at 6:17 PM. Reason : but sometimes on the outside of the clump base there's small mushrooms]

They double in size almost daily. And, in a totally un-gay way, they're really cute.

Well, for one,

Quote :
"The mushroom is an undoubted penis-symbol;there are mushrooms which owe their systematic name (phallus impudicus) to the unmistakable resemblance of the male organ"

So I was calling a penis symbol cute.

chanterelle season! I grabed these yesterday from under some brush. Its been really dry so the're aren't too many, and the ones that sprouted are pretty beat up. Hopefully we'll get some rain this week

I want to learn mushroom hunting. Is there a class or something you can do in the Triangle? I don't want to teach myself from the internet and then poison myself

You should talk To GREEN JAY, I live in oregon so I don't know much about NC mushrooms.

But morels and chanterelles are easy to identify, you could easily learn on your own without risk.

I like mushrooms, but I'd rather not see them/think about them/watch them grow.

They kinda freak me the fuck out.

But they are delicious.

1985 and GREEN JAY earn major points for this.

You should consider spreading the joy of mushrooms by preparing and selling mushroom growing kits.

State used to have BO222 (the kingdom of fungi), but I'm not sure if it's still available since Dr. Van Dyke retired.

I actually TAed the class and led a mushroom hunting expedition at Lake Johnson.
