Pitt gave up 500 yards of offense to Buffalo, mostly through the air. we should score on them.

31-17

Looks like Pat Forde expects us to lose this weekend. Hopefully we prove him wrong.

Quote :
"Pittsburgh (30). Record: 3-0, with victories over Youngstown State, Buffalo and Navy. Sagarin ranking: 27. When the first loss will come: Oct. 2 at Louisville. Verdict: Contender for second-best in the Big East behind Cincinnati. The Panthers have taken care of business three weeks in a row, including handling a Navy team last week that took Ohio State to the wire. Quarterback Bill Stull has been significantly improved so far and freshman running back Dion Lewis has established himself as a suitable successor to LeSean McCoy. But Pitt probably isn't good enough to avoid dropping a couple of league games on the road.

Awesome another gem from Wolfood98. ECU by 4 TDs over App State too right?

Come on guys, this game is a toss-up but I like our chances because our secondary is our main weakness and they don't have much pass offense. Good matchup for us on paper.

"Q & A with N.C. State's Russell Wilson

Posted: Tuesday, Sep. 22, 2009

N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson holds the Division I-A/Football Bowl Subdivision record with 329 consecutive passes without an interception, dating back to a Sept. 13 game last year at Clemson. Wilson set the record in last week’s game against Gardner-Webb.

Here are excerpts from Wilson’s weekly conference with reporters Tuesday morning:

Q: Did you receive any congratulations (on the record) from anybody that was especially noteworthy? Not that Barack Obama would have called, but you know what I’m trying to say?

A: More than anything my teammates. . . .but that was pretty much after the game. During the game they know that I have that instinct to just keep going and not worry about what else is going on. . . .And then Coach O’Brien came up to me and said, “You’ve got to keep it going.” And stuff like that. And I completely agree. I don’t want to just settle for throwing one (interception) on the first pass. It’s important that I keep working hard and focusing on helping out my team whatever way I can.

Q: Did you ever watch Philip Rivers when he was at N.C. State, and what do you know about him as a player?

A: At UVa, I remember going up watching him play there (in 2003). He probably threw for 450 yards (actually 410), something like that. And he was on point. . .I was sitting on the 50-yard line, I think, and he was on point. I actually sat close enough where I could see him and the way he interacts with his players. He just pushed them and gave them confidence. He came to the sideline, and after he threw a touchdown, he’d come back and, “Let’s throw another one.” That type of attitude. You couldn’t necessarily hear it, but you could just kind of see it. That’s a positive thing. That’s something I always looked up to, something I always have in my mind, always think about. Whenever anybody talks about Philip Rivers, that’s the first thing that comes to my mind.

Q: Have you ever met him?

A: I’ve never met him. I’ve seen him in the distance when he was in the equipment room and I was on the run, but he’s a great player. I would love to meet him some day. I’m sure I will, but he’s a busy guy.

Q: That game you’re talking about, he threw four touchdown passes in that game and then the next week threw four touchdown passes against Florida State. He’s the only other guy (at N.C. State) who’s ever thrown four touchdown passes in a game, which you matched.

A: He’s a great player. The offense they had back then, the guys they had catching the ball and the offensive line, I think they did a great job. We’re really working on that here. We’ve got some guys that can hang onto the ball, and that’s exciting. . . .And the offensive line is doing great, too.

Q: Can you talk about the job Darrell Davis has done for you guys? He already has more catches than he did a year ago. What’s he done to improve?

A: You go to practice, you see it. He’s got a high motor going on. He’s working hard. He’s using his hands well. He’s using his feet, catching the ball well. He’s understanding the offense, understanding where he needs to be. As long as he keeps doing that, he’s going to be a great receiver.

Q: With his height and his frame, does he give you guys a different dimension?

A: We’ve got a lot of tall receivers, a lot of big receivers. We’ve got some of the biggest ones, if not the biggest ones, in the league or across the country, just to be honest with you. That’s a good thing, a positive thing for us, but they can also run really well. They’ve got good stamina and can get up and down the field."

^^^haha wow did you really just bring pass defense stats to try to prove our secondary?

we have a very young secondary that hasnt really been tested, we have one cb that is back after an injury and another that just went out with an injury

i really have no idea what to expect from our secondary against a good pass O

exactly...i like how we have high defensive rankings, and most other schools have played at least one 1-aa opponent already, but the next few weeks will be a lot more telling about how we fare with legit competition

pack_bryan are you serious what that?

We've played one decent team who's QB was less than stellar. I could have played QB for Murray State.

We start a former walk-on WR at CB. If you aren't concerned with our secondary, you must follow another team.

I agree DoeoJ; although I can see us winning this one, every NC State sporting event makes me nervous. What's worse is this one is on espnu. It seems we have no problem winning on raycom, it's when we can actually make a decent name for ourselves that we choke.

nah but in reality we haven't been proven in secondary we all know this.

im fully ready to watch pitt throw for 300 yards on us

no i'm dreading this as much as you are for our 2ndary massive collapse. it's gonna happen. those guys from last year haven't suddenly turned into brian dawkins.

it is not Pitt's game to throw it a bunch. Stull is not built for that. I am not worried about our D vs. their O. I am worried about us being able to run the ball.

That singular factor will determine if we win the game or not IMO.

Well I think they are going to have to make compromises on defense. Its no secret they have a weak secondary, knowing the threat Russell Wilson is in the air, they might have to forfeit pressure to cover our receivers. If and when this happens, then we have less defenders in the box, and I think we will see the running game develop nicely. They can not handle both running and passing defense well enough to stop us, so we can exploit one or the other.

I am concerned about stopping THEIR run, they have an impressive rushing game, and it is the highlight of their offense. With Irving out, we are going to have to work hard to contain the run and if we can do that, then I see us coming out on top.

just relax. we don't even really NEED to win this game. once we lose an acc game i'll freak out. and don't give me the "if we can't beat pitt we can't win the acc" stuff because regardless of the outcome saturday, we will have the same team after the game.

If we don't win this game, we need to go at least 5-3 in the ACC to even be bowl eligible.

We'll find out how improved Stull really is, he was less than impressive last year and that made their offense pretty one dimensional (anyone see that shit show of a bowl they played versus Oregon State?). Stull has thrown 6 TDs and only 1 INT so far this season so maybe he really has come around, but it's hard to judge that considering the lackluster competition they've faced thus far.

Anything can happen in football, there are upsets all the time, though you really can't count on an NCSU win... Anyway, we needed to win against SC, and we need to win against Pitt, don't discount a game because you expect easy wins later on.

Any fuck yes we want to go to a bowl game...

i was just thinking about that the other day. we should beat those four, and carolina and clemson at home should be favorable matchups.

n00b here. im a lurker, but being from Pittsburgh, I was reading in the Post-Gazette and saw a pretty good article in the sports section about Russel Wilson today:

http://post-gazette.com/pg/09266/1000139-142.stm

Nice to see him get some appreciation from outside the ACC.

Here is another article from yesterdays PG previewing the game from Pitt's perspective:

http://post-gazette.com/pg/09265/999800-142.stm

Just thought you all might want to look at these. That is all.

quality first post, self-proclaimed lurker n00b

sounds like Pitt feels similar to us...on some "ok, we've been pretty good this year, but here comes a real test"

makes sense that the line is only -1

yeah, I think NC State's ability to run the football will be the breaking point. If we can't (like SC), the passing game dries up and our defense is out there the whole game. If we can (1AA cupcakes), we shine on both sides of the ball.

But can we run the ball on Pitts D?

I hate that I'm going to be up on Mt Mitchell during the game. I'd love to listen to the game on a small radio, but I don't know if it's gonna be on a station I can get there...

Regardless, we still need five more wins, since only one FCS games counts, unless the rules have changed.

My point was, if we couldn't pull five wins out of the rest of the schedule, why would you want to go lose another shitty bowl?

[Edited on September 23, 2009 at 7:05 PM. Reason : if we can't pull 5 acc wins we would likely be worse than all bowl teams. ]

what's weird, i remember being in the same situation last year when we played ECU. We had not scored a TD against a 1-A foe for something like 12 qtrs. Then Russell threw that sweet athletic as hell pass to Andre Brown...i knew from that moment the kid was different. Here's to a repeat.
