good lord you are retarded, they made the sweet sixteen LAST SEASON and have made the NCAA tournament every year for the past 25 years. Granted they will probably have a bit of a down year this coming season, but come on.
with that in mind, my choice is Arizona football, which was a Pac-10 powerhouse for most of the 90s under former coach Dick Tomey:
Quote : | "n 1987, he became head coach at Arizona, earning Pac 10 "Coach of the Year" honors in 1992. During his tenure, he coached five future NFL first-round draft choices, 20 All-Americans, and 43 Pac-10 first team players. His best teams were in the mid-1990s, highlighted by a tenacious "Desert Swarm" defense. He led Arizona to the only two 10-win seasons in school history, highlighted by a 12-1 season in 1998, in which they finished 3rd in both major polls--the highest ranking in school history." |
Mike Stoops had a good season last year at Arizona, going 8-5 with a win against BYU in the Las Vegas bowl, but he needs to go to a bowl again this season to keep his job.9/24/2009 1:30:59 PM |

For most any school in the country, that'd be good. But based on the standard set at Arizona (ranked top-5 on ESPN's prestige rankings), I wouldn't think you'd be satisfied with that. They've had one elite-8 appearance since the 2002-2003 season (nothing beyond that). Their record in conference play is 65-53 since then also. Good, but how can you not expect a little more?

I'm not satisfied with it, but a sweet sixteen appearance last season and 25 straight NCAA tourney appearances is MORE than respectable...this thread isn't about programs not living up to the reasonable or less than reasonable expectations of their fans, it's about programs you wish would get back to respectability. Arizona basketball, while maybe not achieving at the level it once did, is a long way from being in the category of "needing to get back to respectability".9/24/2009 2:06:36 PM |

Point taken. Probably been mentioned, but UCLA football needs to be on this list.

UCLA football is 3-0, had a top 10 recruiting class last year, and is well on the way to being respectable again.
^^and no offense, but there are plenty of UofA alums that would disagree wholeheartedly... They owned the PAC-10 for so many years...There's been some pretty embarrassing losses and incidents in the last couple of years. I'd love to see them winning 25+ games on a regular basis again. Haha, their loss in the Sweet 16 in March was one of the WORST in tourney history....

there might be, but I would put those in the delusional fan category...just because a program doesn't live up to unrealistic expectations doesn't mean they aren't RESPECTABLE. If you define respectable as going beyond the sweet sixteen then you are a moron.
Quote : | "Haha, their loss in the Sweet 16 in March was one of the WORST in tourney history" |
whatever man, I can think of at least 5 more embarrassing games from the last tourney starting with Wake Forest getting blown out by Cleveland State. Getting killed by a #1 seed in the tournament is not that embarrassing.

exactly.

Arizona is definitely in for a rebuilding season, but frankly I think they'll beat us...they have an excellent senior PG who will make Degand/Javi/Mays look stupid.

I knew you'd chime in after all this Arizona talk, but we both know Herb won't be beating UofA very often anymore (now that Sean Miller is the coach).9/24/2009 4:44:18 PM |

what makes you believe he won't beat them this upcoming season?

2 of the past 3 seasons they've been coached by either a no-name assistant (who was previously ASU's radio announcer) or captain retard himself (kevin o'neil). Now they are coached by one of the best coaches on college basketball. Pretty simple.9/24/2009 5:39:58 PM |

U of Houston was awesome in football and basketball. Our famous white shoes team in '67 beat Houston when they were ranked #2 in the country. Ever since the SWC died they have been a minor blip on the radar, though their upset the other week of Okie State was pretty cool.
TCU, Minnesota, Navy, Washington, Colorado, Pitt, and GT have all had national prominence in football at one time or another and kinda faded away for various reasons. Even Vandy had their day in the sun. Notre Dame is far from the days of competing for a national title, but I don't buy the argument that X team has to be good in order to make sports interesting. It creates a vacuum for another school to step up and take their place. 9/24/2009 5:59:44 PM |
