^So you're arguing that her forgiveness matters in this instance.

But it shouldn't matter in other cases?

If you're advocating a full-on case-by-case system of justice, that's cool, but you don't have many people on your side. Consistency is a critical part of most people's notions of justice.

Her forgiveness isn't the only thing going for Polanski.

There's also the whole thing about literally nothing being accomplished by locking up a 76 year old man. Besides going against the wishes of and further traumatizing the victim who this is supposed to be about. And fulfilling some skewed vision of justice. The same one that previously said "fuck it, we don't really care or you would be arrested by now" for thirty years.

It is about as close as you can get.

He wouldn't be going to jail as a 76 year old man if he had stood trial in the first place. First mistake was raping a a 13 year old, second was fleeing. The guy brought it on himself.

This isn't a simple case of speeding 5 over and getting caught at a speed trap, rape is rape and since the victim was a kid, it's pretty bad. If the crime was something minor and stupid, I'd probably ask the state why they would be extraditing some foreigner back to the states, but rape is a very serious offense. No matter if the sex was consensual or the "victim" forgives him.

It's not like that case of the black high school kid who had sex with his gf who was like a year younger, then ended up getting what 6 years?

My mom was telling me something about how Polanski had made a plea deal that he would go to the crazy house for evaluation for 90 days and then what the crazy house determined was the best course of action with him the court would abide by, but then the court renigged on the plea deal and the prosecutor told him this was going to happen so he should leave the country.

Anyone else heard of this or is this another one of my mom's gubnet conspiracies?

Yeah, if that guy can go to jail for consensual sex passed off as statutory rape then Polanski can certainly go to jail for this.

Where is the establishment which rallied around a woman who couldn't once get her story straight in Durham a few years back on this? They were ready to expel, completely without cause, three students because they fit the archetypal prototype pre-programmed in their mind. So far, they appear silent.

I thought I heard that the recent plea deal from a few years ago was to just pay a fine and have no jail time. Never worked since Polanski never showed up in the states in person. Probably thought it was a ruse(sp?)...

Naw she was saying this was back in the 70s when this all originally happened.

She did have the point that if Polanski needs to go to jail so does the girl's mother for pimping her daughter out.

^You're right about the plea deal:

Quote :
"Worst for Polanski, however, is probably the provocation that he himself gave to prosecutors. In 1978, when he was brought to trial, Polanski fled because he believed the judge sentencing him was not going to accept the plea bargain he'd agreed to, a 90-day mental evaluation at Chico State Prison. In 2008, filmmaker Marina Zenovich -- who had no prior relationship with Polanski -- released a documentary, Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, that corroborated Polanski's fear that his plea bargain wouldn't have taken effect. Polanski tried to use the information presented in the film to get his case dismissed. Even the prosecutor from the original trial said in the documentary that he didn't think the judge, who is now dead, had been fair to Polanski."

I also found this:

Quote :
"A source familiar with the investigation told The Times that the U.S. Marshals Service had come close to arresting Polanski half a dozen times or so over the past few decades -- though several of those opportunities presented themselves in the last two years."

Yeah. Apparently the judge talked to the DA when he wasn't supposed to, and shit went down that wasn't supposed to.

drain his wealth and lock him up. No one is calling for his execution just calling for him to be put away from his life of luxury and finally getting justice for his misdeed 30 years ago.
I can see why this woman wants to just get on with life bc she has been in the media off and on for 30 years so she is prob way over all this mess.

Roman Polanski drugged and anally-raped a 13 year old girl

then he jumped bail and has been a fugitive from justice for 32 years.

anyone who says he should be "forgiven" and to "just let it go" should be beat with a stick.
