Just got back from the State Fair ... Mapped out all the rides and some of the other notable locations...

In case you didnt see it on the front page, you can download it all for your iPhone for just a buck!

Chocolate Covered Bacon and Deep Fried HO HOs ftw!

I was thinking about this today though ... how come I have never seen deep fried cinnabons? That would be my favorite I think, if they had it.

Some vendors will be open on Wednesday, however most will be open on Thursday. You can get in for free on Wednesday and Thursday (until 2pm, so they can prep the fair to officially start at 3pm).

enter for free and eat. We will close the gates at 2 p.m. to prepare for
our 3 p.m. start time. None of the rides or exhibits will be open until
3:30 p.m., but you can still come early to walk around and eat.

Some vendors may be open on Wednesday, Oct. 14, but all vendors will be

Weather wise, a less than desirable start to the fair...

Here is a list of all the rides that I put together after visiting on wednesday:

from the fair, on facebook:

"N.C. State Fair: Yeah, there’s a deep-fried app for that.

N.C.'s Notes|Notes about N.C.|N.C.'s Profile
Yeah, there’s a deep-fried app for that.Share
Today at 9:34am
A few weeks ago we came across the Twitter account @StateFairApp. Upon further investigation, we ended up talking with Triangle resident and app creator robster about the State Fair Apps he’s created, including one specifically for the N.C. State Fair. (We’re even the featured Fair on his Web site screenshots.) Rob was nice enough to answer some questions for us.

We haven’t tried it out yet, but we’ll be giving away promo codes from our @NCStateFair Twitter account and at the Deep-Fried Triangle Tweetup on Thursday, Oct. 22, so you can take it for a test-drive. (Haven’t registered for the tweetup yet? Visit http://deepfriedtriangletweetup.eventbrite.com/ to join us. Rob will be there to talk about the app.)

Why did you create an app for state fairs?

I often go to the Fair, and spend most of my time walking around searching for 10 or so odd things that I know I enjoy or have read about prior to going. Those things are my top priority items while I am at the fair. Because I enjoy creating apps, it seemed like a great way to do something useful that people in my community could use.

How will this app help fairgoers?

With an app that has a search function tied to a map, I thought it would be helpful for people who are looking to get to a few rides or exhibits quickly, without fumbling their ways through the fairgrounds to find them. I also wanted to allow people to give feedback for rides and exhibits. These things are the core features of the application. It also provides important information such as where the first aid station, restrooms, gates and mothers rooms are located, and shows you where you are located currently in conjunction to all those items. It’s the portable, “YOU ARE HERE” map that is useful at different times.

What features can N.C. State Fairgoers expect from the app?

Ratings and reviews for the rides and exhibits (in version 1.1), a map of all the rides, buildings, and exhibits, a few of the favorite and unique food items and an event schedule with times and locations.

What’s your favorite part of the Fair?

I like taking my kids to see the bicycle show, the animals and the farm equipment. That’s what we spend most of our time doing, but when I get a chance to break away, I head for the thriller rides, funnel cakes and fried treats.

If you could deep-fry anything, what would it be?

Funny you should ask! I was talking with my wife about this the other day, and I am surprised I have never seen it… Deep-Fried Cinnabons!!! That would be a winner, I just know it. You heard it here first… it’s next year’s deep-fried sensation."

where is the deep fried butter stand? i've talked to a couple people who have been to the fair and haven't seen it...i'm going this evening and don't want to walk all over the place trying to find it (and potentially still fail to find it). anybody seen it or know where it is?

i don't think they have that at this fair.

also i'm beginning to believe that the fair and by extension the food served there is a very sophisticated plot to remove the weakest 10th of the population.

I couldn't find any fried butter, but I also couldn't find the bacon, so maybe I wasn't looking hard enough...did have fried cookie dough, which was pretty awesome

Most pleasant surprise of the fair was seeing the barrel monster...I had not heard it was going to be there...it was like the payoff of seeing a landmark you've been reading about for a while mixed with the fortuitosity of seeing a celebrity unexpectedly. (yes I am aware that fortuitosity is not a word)

On the way to the fair now. Probably going to grab a ribeye sandwich, corn on the cob, and deep fried Milky Way. Of course, I will be stopping by the hushpuppy mill! Also, I think I can talk my girlfriend into getting some deep fried oreos that I can steal.

The chicken fried bacon served with ranch was the best thing I ate at the fair. If you are in line at the main "deep fried everything" stand, it is located behind you to your right in a smaller, white stand. At the same place, they have deep fried mac/cheese, but I didn't think it was very good.

The Fried Candy Bar stand has a "Combo." 1 snickers (no substitutions- i wanted a milky way), 2 oreos, and 1 reese's for $7.

Ribeye Sandwich did not disappoint.

We dropped our ride tickets so we only rode the ferris wheel and nothing else.

But I did get some BA pictures of myself posing with the barrel monster.

I didn't ride any rides when I went last weekend, but I'd kinda like to go on the swings that go really high.

i havent gone this year but i imagine it would be the same as past years where they will have stations set up outside the gate and they will just give you an admission ticket for the cans.
