yes but a little faster paced, more weapons and less character customization (there is still plenty). and has cool cell-shaded graphics!

this might've been covered, but what does a class mod do? after i beat sledge at lvl 19 it made me a lvl 19 survivor

what's that about?

class mods are class specific items and can do things like add skill points, modify stats, cause health/ammo regeneration.. some effects can affect your entire party. you can only have one class mod equipped at a time.

my soldier has a support gunner one equipped now that has +9 ammo regen for the team.. gain ammo back almost as fast as i use it

no bank. but you can expand your inventory by helping out the claptraps.

i finished my first playthrough last night at level 36, almost 37. onwards to 50!

No, there is no stash. You either have to sell an item or hold on to it in your inventory. It sucks in the beginning when you've got a weapon you want to use that has a level requirement you don't currently meet and you have all of 9 spaces for things.

It also sucks because it means you can't transfer a really cool class specific item from one character to another if you're playing single player.

You can expand your backpack though. Currently I have 33 slots. I have no idea how many you can have by the end of the game.

^^ In the clip?

wow.

Do you have skills to add size to your magazine? Or is that the default size for the gun?

yeah I have the medic 30 or 40% clip size skill, but the gun itself was orange and just had a massive clip. ALSO, if you sre still on your first play through and have friends higher than you on their second, you can buy the capacity upgrades from vending machines in their game. They cost about 200k I think. Got the assault rifle one, about to get the grenade one too.

you can have a max of 42 slots in your pack at the end of playthrough 1 (that's helping all 10 claptraps). i'm not sure if you can get more (or if the claptraps give you some other kinda loot for helping them in playthrough 2)

i think i made a mistake in trading my 28x11 scattergun for sledge's scattergun. it's a little stronger, but that double shot is annoying and only holds 2 rounds

i was in the lost caves and had just repaired the claptrap in there to get some extra slots

as i was opening the red box to see what goodies it contained, the camp respawned on me - as I was in the exact middle of it

i fought my way over to the neighboring camp that i had cleaned out earlier and started working on the respawned camp

as i was finally getting a handle on the respawned camp, the neighboring camp i had set up in then decided to respawn on me too

luckily a group of alpha skags spawned at about the same time and started attacking the initial camp, giving me time to clear out the neighbor camp i was in

i did have to 'fight for my life' once when a badass psycho got behind me and nearly took me out

i was a lvl 15 soldier, my sniper isn't quite that powerful it did come in super handy though

my turret + my awesome shield + my awesome shotty with fire effects allowed me to deal with the skags without too much difficulty

damn lady told me he had a super shield so i went in there all shock spec-ed and got my ass handed to me by all his minions

last run-through i just hit him with a shock sticky and unloaded into him with an explosive machine gun and that did the trick

I can't believe how easy the huge skag was in the story line mission. Can't remember if it was "final piece" or the mission before that, but when that thing came up I thought it was going to be epic. Instead I stood up on the ramp and just critted his eyes and he easily fell.....oh well

^^In single player you can lock onto targets and drive around freely while firing. You don't need to move to the turret. Granted you can't lead your target, so yeah.

Regardless riding around in a vehicle for that encounter is a death sentence anyway. The vehicle won't take much damage and when it explodes you're essentially dead.

^ Get a car, arm it with the machine gun. Find one of the several hills around the Rakk, put your crosshairs on it and unload with both triggers. If you get enough distance, you'll get him down to about 60% before he's even remotely close. Kite him around - you'll either a.) get enough of a lead to turn and fire in short bursts or b.)return to his original spawn zone minus whatever health you've taken away, and you'll be able to unload on him from the hill again.

If you're on 360:
Make arbitrary gamer account (I'm almost certain you don't need LIVE).
Make new character on that account.
Play splitscreen.
Drop items from main character into bank character.
Save/Exit game.

Quote :

My sniper on Playthrough 2 managed to get 45 somehow... supposedly the claptraps in Play 2 are just supposed to give you a grenade mod or shield mod instead of the Backpack SDU if you found them already on your first playthrough, but one of them gave me another SDU for some reason.

Maybe a bug, but I won't complain about it.

Quote :
"I just finished the first playthrough a yesterday. I haven't decided if it's worth repeating just to reach the level cap."

From my experience, starting the second playthrough was totally worth it.

On the first, it was ridiculously easy to become very over-leveled just by doing a few extra quests or fighting aimlessly in Old Haven for a while (because the Lance are a lot more fun to fight than bandits, what with the armor and shields). Everything was just too easy and it got boring fast (again, because I was overleveled... but then again I was actively avoiding doing most non-story quests after level 25, because I knew they'd just give me more experience I didn't want... for reference, I'd just hit level 36 upon entering the final boss fight).

On the second playthrough, not only did the loot take a HUGE jump up in quality, but the enemies all had more health and did more damage, and the AI even seemed smarter sometimes (the front-armored skags just stopped turning their backs to me... would have taken most of my ammo on one or two of them if not for having a good corrosive gun). The game underwent a huge jump up in quality by becoming more challenging. I'd actually have to use cover and play smart instead of just charging at the enemy's chest and shooting them point-blank in the face with any gun.

On another note, has anyone played much online/matchmaking co-op yet? So far on 360, it's been matching me up with people below my level and on much earlier story missions, even though I know there are people hosting higher level games. And hopefully the community is different at higher levels (I only tried LIVE matchmaking around level 20-ish and have yet to return to it), but virtually no one used a mic or even did anything remotely productive, instead just mostly running off in different directions. And any time we switched zones (which people would do at completely random moments) everyone would just start trying to duel each other instead of doing something related to the task at hand.

i've been playing almost entirely co-op on my second playthrough. i'd say about half of the groups i join are good and the other half are like you described. if you go to custom match you can see the active quest, the good matches i've been in i looked for people on a major mission like sledge or krom. more often than not those are the ones that are actually trying to reach objectives and not just fucking around.

^Which of the following would you rather play?:
a) Diablo II (with guns)
b) Baldur's Gate 2 (with new graphics)
c) Oblivion (with combat mechanics that don't completely suck)

Results:
a) Get Borderlands
b) Get Dragon Age
c) Get Fallout 3

i never played diablo II, but heard it was awesome. never played baldurs gate 2, but saw a commercial for dragon age and liked that. liked oblivion and had fun playing fallout 3 so it's a save choice, but borderlands looks interesting.

did someone say there was splitscreen action on borderlands? if so that'd seal it for me assuming the others don't

There is indeed splitscreen on Borderlands.

Opinion: Fallout 3 is the absolute last one of those three to buy, unless you really really love pointless exploration and shallow combat mechanics. The story isn't anything special, and the graphics are good but hardly a selling point. The game tries to bank on having a huge world but the problem is that there's nothing particularly exciting to do in that huge world.

Haven't played Dragon Age yet, but I'm certain it's good, as even some of Bioware's most mediocre titles have been better than Bethseda's huge-world-with-no-meaningful-content roaming RPGs.

As for Borderlands, it's the most fun I've had on any FPS game since Modern Warfare 1, and it does the whole "loot-based action-RPG" thing very well. The controls and gameplay are great, the world looks nice enough (looks great coming from a new and relatively low-budget studio... on 360, it's mostly just textures laid onto solid surfaces without much bump detail, but the dynamic outlines help to distract from this and make it look a lot better), and it is surprisingly bug-free and glitch-free given the game's size (in fact, I have yet to find any bugs that negatively affect gameplay).

I've really only found two things to complain about at all in Borderlands -- the LIVE community for the game kinda sucks, and the first playthrough is too easy (at least it's too easy to get overleveled... I like being thorough about quests, but to avoid getting massively overleveled, I had to skip a TON of sidequests to keep the game entertaining.... second playthrough has been fine, though... possibly they're just compensating for not having easy/normal/hard difficulty choices by just making Play1 easy and Play2 somewhat harder, which is fine with me).

Hope you enjoy this excessive analysis, if you bother to read it.

At this point I really wouldn't describe Borderlands as Diablo 2 with guns. With the limited options that Borderlands provides it would best be described as Nerf Diablo or Diablo Jr.

Diablo 2
Large variety of skills, many build options
Large variety of equipment, including charms, runes, socketable items, etc.

Borderlands
Every skill is passive (+damage, -reload time, etc.). You've just got the one true "skill" that you obtain automatically at level 5.
You've got shields and a class mod. That takes the place of the helmet, armor, boots, gloves, etc., etc., etc. from Diablo 2.
You cap out at level 50, and you will hit the max level before you are halfway finished with your second playthrough.

You also only get one choice every time you level. Where to spend that single passive skillpoint. You had options for stat distribution and skill distribution in Diablo. Granted stat distribution doesn't really make sense in the FPS context. Hmmmm. Dex vs. str? Still it all boils down to an RPG that gives you a (single) choice when you level.

The weapon variety was overblown as well. 3 zillion combinations... where one combination is the same revolver but with a 49% increased fire rate as opposed to one with a 48% increased fire rate.

Still a really fun game but it's certainly not going to be in my rotation as long as Diablo 2 was.
