^^If you're referring to boarding on the east coast I think you should still consider yourself a lower skill level boarder. Not to try and offend you, but anyone that considers themselves intermediate should be able to tackle 90% of the east coast black diamonds without breaking a sweat.

That's what i hear also. I've never been out west, but i am going in about a month. At resorts such as wintergreen & snowshoe, the blacks aren't a problem for me, but what i hear a black around here is like a blue over there.

do they type, or width of skiis depend on the what kind of mountains/how much powder i'll be skiing? is there something called "all mountain" skis which would be good enough for out west and and east? as far as groomed goes, i certainly don't see my going off the designated trails or anything like that...

i just figured that instead of spending $250ish on rentals this season I should buy something...but i'm pretty n00bish on this topic so I appreciate the help.

^Different types of skis are used for different things. Twin tips are generally for people who do a lot of freestyle skiing and spend a lot of time in the terrain park. Powder skis are fatter and help you stay on top of deep powder, however they are not generally good for skiing on the groomed slopes due to the fact that they are harder to carve on a groomed surface. A regular Alpine ski (such as what I showed you) is perfectly fine for all groomed slopes and maybe getting into light powder.

Yes, the ski setup is $175. If you go with that website, you are looking at spending $100-150 on boots (You probably want to go to a local ski shop and get fitted for boots before you buy them on-line). You don't want to get on the slopes and find out that you've got a pair of boots that don't fit.

I'm assuming you will also want poles, the website has poles anywhere from $20 for aluminum poles (which are perfectly fine) or you can go with a composite pole for around $25.


I know that is more than you are looking to spend, but I think most people would tell you that getting started for $300-$350 is pretty good. If you plan on skiing as much next year, they will be paid for.

I hope this information helps. I'm sure you can find deals on other website, I would definitely shop around, I was just giving you this because I have used them a couple times and have been satisfied with them.

So I've been looking thru all these skis on craigslist, and I'm wondering what kind of ski I'll need for Breckenridge (going in Feb). Don't I need something wider than the normal ski which is the same length all the way down? I do some east coast stuff too, but I want to make sure I'm prepared for breck....

I have a set of Nordica Hotrods (Eliminator model) that I'd consider selling. They're a good all-mountain ski, and offer a lot of performance without being unforgiving. I don't know what length you're looking for, though...aren't you a little smaller than I am? I'm 5'8" and 185, and a fairly aggressive skiier...if you're not at least that size, they're probably more ski than you want (they're like 177-178 cm...don't remember exactly).

The skis are 2 seasons old, I believe, but I didn't ski at all last year, so they've got maybe 20 days worth of skiing on them.

Will be at Snowshoe Dec. 13-16. Hope there are some slopes open by then else I'll just be getting drunk for 3 days in a baller cabin. Temperatures are dropping up here and they should be getting some natural snowfall starting the end of this week so I'm hopeful. Will give updates on conditions afterwards.

One of my friends owns a nice cabin just outside the back gate at Snowshoe. He's pretty eager to get it rented out any days from 11/29 to 12/10 so he's offering it up for $195 a night right now. Two day minimum stay iirc. There's also a $120 cleaning fee, but that is his actual cost. Sleeps 6 adults + 2-4 kids; fireplace, hot tub, wireless internet, yadda yadda yadda. If you learn to ski in Colorado it really won't help much with learning to ski here. Skiing in powder is a lot different then skiing on ice pellets as I discovered last year

I had a rough time in Lake Tahoe last year. I had skiied west coast before, but it had been 7 years since I previously skiied (same area) [previously had 1 or 2 outings a year, so experienced, but only on the east coast]. Started the first day with full day private instruction to get the cobwebs off. That helped. But didnt put it together until the third day, but that was strictly lower level black diamonds and groomed blues.

As mentioned previously, Skack and I ended up unintentionally surviving one double black bowl.

I performed really poorly in the powder. Kinda pissed me off, because Skack was tearing it up with his big fat snowboard, and I could not hang with what I had. However, I did not have powder skis, and the quality of the powder that week was not good. I kept sinking in, and couldnt even attempt to do any pivot powder turns. I plan on renting powder skis in Jackson Hole if the conditions warrant, and trading them out for shaped on non powder days. At the end of January, when we are going, I am hoping an praying for high quality deep powder.

snowboarded at A-Basin 2x and Keystone 1x so far... been a lot of fun just getting out there but not many runs open. so glad i moved to CO.

Its my first pair that Ive bought and don't really know too much about tuning/maintenance. I was able to get the bindings set and the din adjusted correctly but wasn't sure what else needed to be done. Are they waxed at the factory or is this something ill need to do before they ever see the snow? I would think they could be skied on a couple times before waxing but like I said I dont know. Can someone recommend a good wax to use? Or hell would someone want to do it for me for a little bit of extra coin??

Snowboards come with a coating of wax...I'm sure skis do too.

Go to Alpine Ski Center for wax and a scraper. Tell them where you'll be skiing and they'll recommend a wax. It'll probably be $10-$14 for wax and another $5 for the scraper.

You can usually find an old iron at a thrift store for $2 to apply it.

Hit up Youtube for waxing videos before the first time you do it.

visit their website, they'll have all the relevant info there for snow conditions, rental costs, lessons cost, lift ticket cost.

basically you just go there buy a lift ticket, rent the gear, they size it and tell you how it works, you go out and try to go down the bunny slope, if you need help they have people that do lessons.

I went out to Salt Lake last spring (april) during an epic streak of storms. My skis are not powder skis and the snow in the trees was deep and a lot heavier than salt lake usually gets (it was friggin april though) so it was too difficult for me. We tore up some trees at Brighton and Snowbird in march of 07 and I couldn't handle the same runs last spring due to conditions.

To whoever said they were thinking about booking a park city trip for later this season, I've done both salt lake hotels and park city condos, and my advice to you is to skimp on lodging, stay in decent hotel room with a 'fridge and continental breakfast in salt lake, and rent a car so you can drive to whatever resort you want. You may have a huge budget so staying slopeside might be within reason. The resorts in SLC, Powder Mountain and Snowbasin north of the city around Ogden are also cheaper (I haven't skiied those yet although I'd give my left nut if offered a trip there over christmas)

The thing is, the resorts around salt lake are significantly better IMO. Alta/Snowbird is hands down the best I've ever skiied, specifically Alta (but you can only ski). Brighton is fairly inexpensive and has mostly fast lifts, great trees, and not a lot of lines. Solitude kind of sucked while I was there but the top of the mountain is a lot of fun although it has a slow lift.

If you're staying in salt lake, I think Park City is a 30-45 minute drive depending on where you stay so you can still go there if you must. Deer Valley has a great atmosphere and is probably unbeatable during bad weather because they groom the fuck out of it and no snowboarders. The mountain leaves a little to be desired though since the runs are a little short IMO. There are a ton of them though, so you don't really get bored. I've been to all 7 resorts combined in Salt lake and park city and Alta wins hands down, snowbird right behind it, Deer Valley tied with Brighton for me (DV probably better but brighton is almost half the price). I liked Park City and The Canyons, they are great resorts but I'd go to the others I listed if I had the choice...PC, DV, and The Canyons are also really expensive. For some reason, Alta/Snowbird is cheaper, yet signifcantly better, although there is much less beginner terrain at those 2.

Sorry for the long post. I'm pissed that I can't go out west this year. I'm still thinking of driving up to vermont, maybe Mt. Snow, or if the weather is great I'll just save 7 hours and go to Snowshoe but I don't want to plan a trip on the east coast not knowing what the weather and conditions will be like

A little irritated. Jackson Hole has just upped their promotion. Fly 4 people up there, stay 5 nights, and get 3 day lift tickets, and they pay for 2 of the flights. When we booked, they were only paying one. And they seem to get the price of the flights about 125 cheaper than what I can find them online.

Going to visit a friend is one thing, but it's really not worth the trouble or expense to fly out there when you're just learning. You'll have your hands full in the east, initially, and not really appreciate the mountains/slopes/snow out there nearly enough to justify the trip.

After you ski a half dozen or so times, then yeah...time to start thinking about going out west.

For right now, anywhere you go (other than maybe Appalachian Ski Mountain in NC) will be fine.
