^ exactly, she is the future of the GOP.

Sarah Palin and the (hopefully) up-and-coming "conservative" party-- the same social conservative, pretend-to-be-fiscal-conservatives that we've known for years are going to be the best thing the Democrats could hope for.

The Democrats worst fear would be "Republican" politicians who can put their money where their mouth is when it comes to spending, but who aren't bigots when it comes to civil rights and other issues.

^^ She's not a moderate--she's a liberal. And nobody can figure out WTF Newt was doing there--it's just one more reason that he's becoming increasingly marginalized as a potential candidate for any future public office.

^ I don't think a far-left loon like you has any credibility predicting the "future of the GOP"--especially considering Democrats got their asses handed to them tonight.

What is the fucking future of the Democrats? Are they going to stop running campaigns from the "middle" that are total bullshit and then actually governing from the far-left?

http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2009/11/police-called-to-ny-23-polling.html

Apparently there have been 2 cases of voter intimidation by tea-baggers that the police have been called for in NY, that have nothing to do with the black panthers.

Republicans win: It's a referendum on Obama!
Democrats win: They're only governor's races. They don't matter much.

See how the game is played?

^ So democrats winning the presidency and congress means they're NOT supposed to try to enact the legislation they campaigned on, but republicans winning 2 governors races means voters want the president and congress to change the course (that they were elected on in the first place)

that makes SOOOOO much sense

Oh, no, I wasn't suggesting that it would be a permanent miracle-cure for the GOP. I'm saying that at least it would yank them back into line for a little while.

Yep, that's what I've been thinking. Defeating it might be tough, but hopefully now it can at least be largely neutered.

Moderate, libertarian-wing Republicans?

Like...me?

I've said for years that when the time is right (both in the political landscape and in my own life), I will run for office, assuming I can get the backing.

Probably not a big deal on here, but Anthony Foxx (D) won the mayoral race in Charlotte over John Lassiter (R). Pat McCrory (R) held the position for 14 years before deciding not to run this time.

The rest of the country may have gotten a little more red, but NC on average went a little more blue (source BlueNC).

"Charlotte has First Democratic Mayor in 22 years & Dems pick up a seat on Council"

"Congratulations Mark Kleinschmidt [only democrat in the race], Mayor of Chapel Hill"

"I'm so happy for Gordon Smith! [democrat - council seat] Good for Asheville, good for North Carolina."

"Winston-Salem held for the Dems. All Republican challengers to council lost, including a stealth write-in campaign against Molly Leight in the South ward."

Ahahahahaha, I'm a dumbass. But I take comfort in the fact that it took until page 2 to figure that out.

I agree with Duke's post on page one. The lessons that the Republicans need to learn is that Chris Christie is not a particularly conservative Republican and Bob McDonnell ran without explicitly tying himself to the Republican party (he rarely mentions his affiliation in ads and one of the predominant colors he used was blue). The only overtly conservative candidate lost in an district which had gone to the GOP since the 1860s.

The Christian wing of the GOP needs to realize most people don't really feel a compelling need to prevent homosexuals from wedding or stop all abortions. Unfortunately, they won't.

Quote :
"2 cases of voter intimidation by tea-baggers"
Pro-life (anti-choice, whatever) protesters aren't "tea-baggers". The tea parties were pretty narrowly targeted against a perception of government excess and drew a lot of libertarians who would oppose strict laws on abortion.

Hopefully it vanishes. Half-assed bills can be just as destructive.

I love it, I absolutely love it. Two governor seats go to the GOP and the press is saying that it's bad news for Obama. Even MSNBC is saying how horrible this is for the Democrats and how this is just so important for the Republicans.

Meanwhile the two races that actually matter to Obama, since they affect CONGRESS, both went to Democrats. One of them in a heavily GOP district and the other in a district that is by no means a guarantee.

So, when thinking locally people voted Republican, and when thinking nationally people voted Democrat. But this is a huge blow to Obama, of course.

I don't really give a rat's ass about a few congressional seats...the dems have the majority with or without them (hat tip U2).

Governor's races were statewide and sampled a much broader population

A much broader population of people VOTING FOR GOVERNOR! Not everyone lives in a bubble with partisan blinders on and can actually vote for a candidate outside their party lines. I know that's a crazy concept for some of you and your Lord and Savior Rush wouldn't want you to be exposed to such truths.

So the future of the GOP lies with candidates who give in and endorse liberal democrats? Some of you wouldn't last 5 seconds in politics, and I'm even more surprised that some of you have managed to live as long as you have.

Those independents that the left always claims are turned off by conservative bravado voted for the Republican in droves in places like New Jersey where messiah obama spent a lot of his time, and in Virginia. I guess the racists have come home to roost, huh?

And way to go, Maine!

Ugh, didn't know Maine was having a referendum on gay marriage... That is the one issue that I just can't even fathom the other point of view on. I just don't get it. How does it cheapen or change your life? It actually just pisses me off even thinking about it... but that isn't for this thread.

And I mentioned it in another thread, but I'm glad the NY-23 race turned out the way it did. It's absolutely scary to think that a guy who listed Glenn Beck as one of his top mentors would win a congressional seat. I imagine he only did that to gain the loony vote, but still...

I'm confused, who runs for office? The person or the party? McConnell simply had to have a pulse to win in Virginina, and your messiah campaigned his heart out in New Jersey.

It took a RINO to leech enough votes from a Conservative candidate to steal a win in upstate New York to a democrat who won with less than half of the votes...I wouldn't exactly call that a mandate for Obama.

I think Glenn Beck's complete lunacy is a relatively recent development. He was pretty decent, by cable news talking head standards, until maybe 6 months ago (or maybe a year...i can't remember exactly).

Just go to any Olbermann youtube video and you can find some viewers trolling the internet proclaiming the genius of him.

To me, changes in party balance don't matter all that much. Sure, if we get the right Republicans in office, it might make a difference. Most mainstream Republicans won't be any better than a Democrat though, really.

You can try. The difficulty is winning Republican primaries. Running as an independent isn't really a viable option, unless you enjoy wasting your time. I think there's a lot of potential support for libertarian-minded individuals, there just isn't a great place for them in the two party system.

" “This was a victory for healthcare reform. From my standpoint we picked up votes last night — one in California and one in New York.”

The two victories–one in New York district 23 where Bill Owens became the first Democrat to win the seat in over a century and in California district 10 where John Garamendi kept the seat vacated by Ellen Tauscher in Democratic hands — brings the number of Democrats in the House to 258.

That gives Pelosi a little more breathing room as she tries to muster the votes needed to pass the sweeping health reform legislation. She could lose as many as 40 Democrats when the House votes, possibly later this week, and still pass the measure.

The two new members are expected to be sworn into office on Thursday."
