I've never understood it. Not sure why williamjoel seems to be denying that it ever happens, you can hardly watch a professional sport without seeing it. I played a lot of basketball and baseball and witnessed plenty of buttslaps, but never once did I feel the need to slap someone else on the butt. 11/5/2009 2:42:58 AM |

not once did I say it doesn't happen. I just don't think it happens as rampantly as proposed. I'd assume it's noticed more in sports because it's the one endeavor in which men are all together and their actions are all exposed. Shit, it probably happens in poker tournaments (NOT a fucking sport), in an office building, etc.

I'm gonna back up ^... I played baseball my whole life until I got hurt right before college and, while I'm sure it happened, I don't ever remember it.
And when I'm watching a game either live or on TV, while it may happen, I have never once noticed it... I'm too busy watching the actual game and not starting at guys asses...
(I am disappointed no Gramattica clip has made it in to this thread, though)

thats a false dichotomy that everyone keeps spouting.
normally when the ass slapping is taking place, the camera is focused on the dugout, not the field, and thus there is no game to be watching for that ~3 second clip.
what, are u trying to say they do a split screen with the ass slapping on one side and the game on the other, and you always blocked out the ass slapping to focus on the game?]11/5/2009 1:08:20 PM |

lol, i don't think anyone in the tread ever actually said that it makes the person gay. you were the first person to bring actual homosexuality into the thread. They just said that it's gay. You should watch last night's south park. I'm assuming you've never called something gay that wasn't a homosexual. Interesting how you jumped to defend that so quickly though.
It happens often. Anyone who thinks otherwise either doesn't participate in or watch sports, is in denial, or has had it happen/done it so many times they don't even realize it any more. And it's not that the people who notice it are looking for it, stop projecting. It obviously has to be in the view of the camera for anyone to see it. They're simply watching the game as well. And it typically takes place between plays. Players are a little busy during the play to be patting each other on the ass.
It's not a big deal. Personally, I've never felt the need to smack a guy on the ass after a good play. I have done it in jest. And I've been smacked/patted on the butt during games. I don't understand where it comes from or why people really do it. but it's certainly pretty common in sports.
and no... it' doesn't happen in the office or at poker games (which I agree is not a sport). Only in sports. In fact, while i don't care for it... i accept it on a field or court. If someone in my office ever patted me on the ass after a good presentation or finding a solution to something, it would not be accepted.11/5/2009 7:11:33 PM |

See, there's the problem right there. Something you don't like? It's gay. Someone you don't like? They're a fag. Explain why being gay is bad, and explain why that makes it cool or clever to use it as a pejorative. Bonus points if you bring up religion.11/5/2009 9:34:49 PM |

ambiguity ITT.
seriously, don't tip-toe around the fact that calling male-on-male ass-slapping "gay" isn't invoking homosexuality. Give me a fucking break.
and the office and poker references were quite broad. I only meant that this act of endearment could happen anywhere.
and, to expand on ^, I too, love how people can call something "gay", or someone a "fag", and immediately call in their poetic license to essentially just not make any fucking sense.
It's like me calling a black duck a nigger, and quickly retracting in the form of "oh no that's just what we say. . ."

no it can't. hetero man on man ass slapping only happens in sports. and it's not endearment anyway...it's motivation or it's a good job kind of thing. hell calling it an endearment makes it more gay than it already is.
calling the act of man on man ass slapping gay, is accurate, because it is in fact, gay...while the slapper and slapee can remain hetero. i agree though, that calling anything negative "gay" is stupid as hell...unless it is actually gay, like hetero man on man ass slapping]11/5/2009 10:36:30 PM |

Look, the fact that you don't like it or think it is a problem doesn't mean it's not how things are.
Most people in our generation grew up using "gay" to mean "lame" or "not cool." I actually don't like using "cool" to mean "good" or "awesome." I prefer it's use to refer to someone being laid back or easy going. That doesn't change the fact that a lot of people, especially when we were all young, used it to mean something "good." The fact of the matter is that millions of people have used the word gay to mean "not good", "lame", something kinda negative for a long time. And with no real intent in meaning that thing is homosexual in nature.
Yes, it's a word used for homosexuals and people started using it to compare things to homosexuality (which many people believed to not be a good thing). But that was derived from something else as well. Words are phonetic symbols. They have no meaning which you do not give them.
Interestingly enough, homosexual is actually the 4th definition for Gay given by merriam and webster.
From m-w.com:
Quote : | "1 a : happily excited : merry <in a gay mood> b : keenly alive and exuberant : having or inducing high spirits <a bird's gay spring song> 2 a : bright, lively <gay sunny meadows> b : brilliant in color 3 : given to social pleasures; also : licentious 4 a : homosexual <gay men> b : of, relating to, or used by homosexuals <the gay rights movement> <a gay bar> synonyms see lively" |
I would say that smacking a guy on the ass after a big play is certainly lively, and in high spirits or that it can induce high spirits.... no?11/6/2009 12:02:31 AM |
