Colin Hanks was fine in BoB...Slave's commentary on actors is terrible, the other day he was saying Nicholson was awful in The Departed

Jack's performance failed because Jack thought it was good. He believed all the mugging and over-the-top theatrics were a good idea, and nobody told him differently because he's Jack. Had he approached the job humbled and inspired, with something to proveāhe might have submitted a classic performance. 3/11/2010 2:30:41 PM |

I see what you're getting at as far as great actors sleepwalking through roles, but I didn't think that role was a particularly egregious example. 3/11/2010 2:47:08 PM |

Yes, it was real, so goddamned real that my head darted back to when I was wearing green combat fatigues and carrying my M-1 Garand rifle fighting in the Pacific.
In a sudden rush, I felt all the elements of war - the terror that was so intense you feared your throat would explode from the hard, heavy, unrelenting pounding of the heart." |

speaking of reference- anyone got a link for breaking each character down? all i really need is picture, character name, and actor name
i am awful at remembering names with faces (especially new characters) and usually end up giving people nicknames (like Brows, Dudesy, Wonky, etc) and it doesn't work well later on down the road 3/15/2010 9:53:39 AM |

they definitely didnt fuck with too much of an introduction to the characters in episode 1. basically threw em straight into war...i think it is going to be a nice contrast to BoB where they gave extensive insight into the characters before sending em into battle. Here, I suspect we get to know the characters as the show goes along. Wonder if they use flashback techniques.
solid episode overall. i liked the Alligator Creek scene. that one jap in the river was nuts, and the one who faked being dead. 3/15/2010 10:08:29 AM |

Robert Leckie (James Badge Dale)
Eugene Sledge (Joe Mazzello)
John Basilone (Jon Seda)
Those are the three main protagonists

i thought so... they glossed over that way too quick.
i get the feeling they're treating life way too cheaply in these here 10 episodes.
even with the beach scene in Private Ryan, you still got some time to reflect on the loss of life. same with BOB. 3/15/2010 6:59:58 PM |

definitely liked it. the intro was pretty cool as well. Tom Brokaw was right when he labeled the men and women of WWII as the "greatest generation." Hard to imagine myself in that scenario.

This is pretty minor, but one of my biggest problems with BoB was that the average age of the characters was probably around 20 and the vast majority of actors involved were over 30. 3/15/2010 8:59:54 PM |
Jeepin4x4 #Pack9 35774 Posts user info edit post |
they have lucked out that Jon Seda, who is playing John Basilone, actually seems to look younger than he did on Homicide: Life on the Street. He's actually 40 this year.
and James Badge Dale for that matter, who is 32. 3/15/2010 9:09:02 PM |

probably really hard to make a quality drama/war movie with 20 yr old college aged actors ... just my 2 cents. 3/16/2010 9:43:48 AM |

Yeah look at any high school movie, most of the principal actors are 25+.
If you look at high school kids irl, most of them look like Michael Cera, and no one wants to see some skinny pizza faced kid manning a .50 cal.

yeah, "the professor" is Robert Leckie - he's also the author of one of the main books the storyline is based on. From what I've read, he will definitely be one of the main characters.
I wasn't blown away by the first part. I liked it and will definitely continue to watch it. But that's based more on the potential I think it has than on what I've seen so far. 3/17/2010 1:34:01 AM |

I've got a stack of 1942 Life magazines and the majority of reporting they did on the pacific was pictures of many dead japs, just like the showed in the aftermath of Alligator Creek.
I was actually pretty impressed by that.
^^ Regardless, I feel like the power of the "greatest generation" was the fact that they were off fighting a brutal war as kids. Brushing their youth aside seems like a big mistake to me.

while very costly in terms of lives the japanese army during this time did not have very advanced tactics, overly relying on the massed infantry charge, resulting in the massive casualties that are depicted. 3/17/2010 10:35:35 AM |

i couldn't help but wonder (and continue to wonder)...
when they go out and field japanese actors to film this show, do you think they have any bad sentimens to do it? i mean, sure its acting, but there's still very strong anti-Japanese repercussions seen today. I just wonder if its a strange paradox between American and Japanese actors. 3/17/2010 10:37:32 AM |

you mean sentiments? no, a job's a job. if by the actors then probably a little but that would be necessary for filling out the roll properly/well i would suppose 3/17/2010 12:33:51 PM |

Also, it was the last legitimate war that [after Pearl Harbor] had nearly unanimous backing on the home front in this country. I doubt many people who fought in Vietnam are thought of in the same way though the sacrifices they made were just as great.3/17/2010 4:26:17 PM |
