Quote : | "1:42 p.m. – The board returns from lunch to discuss changes in federal reporting requirements for race and ethnicity. The federal government is requiring a more-detailed breakdown of race and ethnicity reporting from schools. The changes center around two questions on student paperwork when a child enrolls in school for the 2010-11 school year. They concern whether a student is of Hispanic or Latino origin and the student's race. There is no longer a multi-racial option. A parent would choose one or more of the race choices if the student is multi-racial. School system staff is working to make sure the district computer systems can accept the new information. If parents do not respond, an observer at the school (such as a teacher) will provide the answers. The information must be gathered by July 1, 2010. The changes have to do with descriptive demographic data and do not affect decision-making. The Wake County Public School System does not make decisions based on race." |
as someone who is in a inter-racial (unholy marriage as we call them down here) I request the mutt category be added.1/5/2010 8:25:26 PM |

If you're just going to bring them back, why take them away to begin with 1/13/2010 5:05:06 AM |

The current school board is going to use the survey to bring back some choices that were taken away by the previous school board. That's the plan at least. 1/13/2010 8:47:37 AM |

I understand that, but it seems more cost effective to wait until you have the survey results back first. 1/13/2010 6:27:44 PM |

Yeah, it looks pretty disjointed, but what they're gonna get is an answer from every district that will either back them up or not.
Their detractors have been kinda loud about how it's only four districts out of 9 and they only have like 4% of Wake county vote for them or whatever, even though each won their race handily.
Now that everyone has bothered to start paying attention, they get a solid response from all over, and they get the momentum, or they don't. Obviously they think they will, or they wouldn't do the survey. I'm gonna say they're probably right. 1/13/2010 9:09:56 PM |

This mess is why we're keeping the kid in his preschool for kindergarten next year. We were going to try to get him into a magnet, but the current board seems bent more on making a splash than on educating the students. And I say this as someone who supports most of their so-called platform. 1/30/2010 10:18:26 AM |

They're politicians. Of course they care more about themselves than about citizens. 1/30/2010 10:57:14 AM |

I work for Wake County and I can honestly say I hate the early release Wednesdays and they say they will be gone next year. They were trying to give us time to meet in "PLC/PLT's" professional learning communities/teams but it ends up being extra work for us. The early releases are just terrible for teachers because the schedule is all out of whack and it greatly limits those who need longer class periods (lab based courses)
As for diversity busing...............I can see the good things about it and then also the bad. For the students who are on the buses for HOURS because they live so far away, it's bad. It's also very costly as far as gas goes to bus further...but then again, who would want to teach in a school with a poorer population? There's a reason people move to wake county for teaching jobs/for their kids. 1/31/2010 9:34:30 PM |
