If we could get a high enough resolution image (in space and in time) then reading thoughts would be in principle possible. People already do this with the visual cortex to reconstruct a very low-resolution image (that the subject is looking at). All that is done by just observing the metabolic data that the fMRI machine gives you.

It'd probably be used for something more practical like classification (diagnosis) and for actually constructing a mechanistic theory of the brain

Maybe not precisely the same kind of work I'm doing now, but similar work. I'd like to do more work on AI and language. I'm also interested in developing more rigorous metrics for scientific theories (one of the only philosophical projects I'm interested in)
