Overtime - play tug of war. each team takes turns running one offensive play at a time. the ball will move back and forth across the field, first to TD wins. (it would be awesome to watch, but admittingly it would get boring having to wait for the offense and defense to keep switching on and off the field...so maybe do it but you pick 11 players to play both sides of the ball)
Quote : | "Safety- As difficult and rare safeties occur I think they should be worth like 4 or 5 points." |
worst idea ever. 5 points AND get the ball on a free kick? are you crazy? I think it should be no points but you get the ball on your opponent's 20 yard line automatically...a reverse touchback so to speak.
Quote : | "Challenges- If a challenge is successful; a team should get to keep the challenge. In contrast to the current rules that state a team has to get both right." |
So if the coach gets it right everytime he can keep going? Even if a coach had reason to challenge more than 3 times and kept getting it right, it would be annoying to watch.
Quote : | "4-point field goals. Yeah, getting into the endzone should be worth more, but who decided on 133% more? It would make the 2-point conversion possibility more relevant too." |
IIRC, at one point in football history TD's were worth 4 and field goals were worth 2. As long as TDs are worth double the field goal you can make it whatever you want. Its the same thing with a kick PAT being worth half of an endzone PAT.

They really need to add a rule that makes it impossible to do that shit where they call timeouts that wipe out successful field goal attempts. It's classless and just really cheesy. Once everyone is lined up and the kicker is in position, you shouldn't be able to call a timeout. 12/6/2009 11:41:21 PM |

5 pt Safety sounds absolutely recockulous. Would #1 defenses just never opt for the redzone FG in hopes that they destroy the other team on their 1yd line? Or would an offensive lineman's accidental (or improperly called) endzone holding penalty be completely game changing?

Excessive Celebration- Sure some players take it to the extreme, Joe Horn pulling a cell phone out, TO stomping on the cowboy star back in 2000, or Randy Moss pretending to moon the crowd. Otherwise I see no problem with dancing in the end zone, shouting (as long as your not taunting fans during an away game), or any other fun celebration action. This should not be enforced so heavily as was started in 2006.

Heres an idea for a (admittedly quite radical) rule change:
Eliminate the game clock altogether, instead of 30:00 a half, do them in terms of "number of drives". I'd say a good number would be 6 drives per team per half, or 3 per quarter.
Advantages: 1 - no more clock draining, to me it would be far more interesting if a team couldn't win by just taking time but actually had to keep playing. Also if a team is coming back they aren't burdened by having to rush due to little clock remaining. 2 - if a game is a blow-out, it will end early. If a team is losing by 5 touchdowns, and they have 4 drives left, no reason to play anymore.
Still keep the play clock so you don't baseball-slow it down

I'm still pushing my idea of the "First to 5" overtime rule
A touchdown or two field goals beat you, but you can give up one field goal, get the ball back and score and touchdown to win
5 instead of 6 so that if you're on your own goaline, you can't take a safety intentionally to give the ball back and have the other team still need to score a touchdown

Except the rule isn't about bringing someone down by the back of their jersey. It is bringing someone down by grabbing the back inside of their shoulder pads.
The theory is if you are able to get to someone to take them down with a horse collar you should be able to take them down in another way that isn't a high injury play. This isn't like taking out some sensational hit that we all love... you can go for the legs/waist just as easy if you are in proper position to make the tackle from behind.
----------
I actually think in overtime the ball should be on the 25 yard line and teams should alternate kicking field goals. But your field goal kicker can only kick one time until the remaining players on the team have kicked. Similar to soccer, keep score of successfully kicked field goals until 5 kicks, and after that if still tied it is alternating until someone misses and someone makes to win the game. I think we can all agree football would be more exciting if we heard the words, "And here is Orlando Pace with the 42 yard field goal attempt to win the game..."

I've been pushing the first to six rule since I first heard of it 4-5 years ago. It keeps the game intact because field position, kicking, etc is still meaningful but it doesn't allow the gay endings we see now.
i.e. Team gets a 12 yard pass, then runs for 2 yards, then a questionable 20 yard pass interference is called against the visiting team, then they run for 3 yards, run for 3 yards, run for 1 yard then kick a routine 43 yarder to win it in a dome where the wind can't even affect the kick.
That ending is gay, period. 12/7/2009 10:25:10 PM |

For real.
Alternatively, have a good return to your 40 yd line. Run for 2 yards, get the first down for 12 yards putting you at the oppenents 46 yard line. Get a personnal foul call your way via Tom Brady rule as Eli barely eeks a pass off as the Right End's momentum carries him into the QB. Now you are on the 36 yd line. Rush 2 yard. Rush 3 yards. Now kick the 46 yd routine kick.
Yippee your team sure showed itself to be better in OT with a decent kick return, 3 mediocre runs, one good pass, and one bullshit call in your favor.
Someone poopooed the coin flip statistic but it is not a fair competition if 60% of your Overtime victories is the team to get "lucky" and win the flip.12/8/2009 8:46:36 AM |

My only problem with this is that a corner would have nothing to lose when the QB throws a bomb 30 yards down field near the goal line. If it seems the WR will likely make the catch instead of having to make a goal line stand you can simply interfere and make it 1st and 10 from the 30 yard line.

I dont like the whole "ball crosses the plane" idea in football.
A player can run and dive at the corner of the endzone over the pylon and it counts. But a QB can pass the ball to a reciever in the corner of the endzone, he can catch it in the air, have full possession in the air over the endzone, but because he dosent have 2 feet inbounds, it dosent count. Gimme a break

usually if it's a question of getting 2 feet inbounds then the ball is usually out of bounds... if they were to do away with the 2 feet inbounds rule and just have the ball inbounds and across the plane, then nothing would really change because it's almost impossible to catch a ball out of bounds and put it back inbounds before your feet land out of bounds... that would make for some sick catches though.12/10/2009 3:18:13 AM |
