Talking out of my ass? Everything I stated was fact.
The Big East will not be taken completely seriously until it gets at least 10 teams, preferably 12.
Quote : | "And since when does Miami travel? They don't even fill their home games." |
Miami travels because of bandwagoners across the country. And EVERYONE watches Miami. Just because the tiny student population along with the indifferent population of the city doesn't consistently fill up Landshark doesn't mean any given bowl doesn't want this team.
Quote : | "Bowl games are completely meaningless. Who cares who plays in which one?" |
If we want to get serious, the super bowl is as meaningless as a preseason game in August but I'd rather not get nihilistic.
College football just isn't a playoff oriented league. I personally would rather watch 33 bowl games featuring players all playing out of their minds in their respective super bowl than a playoff, which would destroy this. The bowl system is unique and fun, and makes regular season games incredibly important, more so than in any other league. And giving the damn Boise State Broncos some peace of mind with a playoff is not worth killing that.
And a year with this many undefeated teams is absolutely freakish, and if you think a playoff system wouldn't make the number of pissed off schools increase exponentially, you're kidding yourself.

I'll be honest... I haven't been interested in Miami at all the last five years. I don't even care who they play in a bowl game.
http://blogs.tampabay.com/usf/2009/11/miami-returns-3000-tickets-for-usf-football-game.html
- Granted it's not a bowl game, but you'd think there would be some Canes fans in Tampa.
(there is actually a four page thread on the Miami scout board full of Miami FANS saying they don't travel well and even in their heyday they'd bring 7-9k to big bowls)

Everything? Because your contradicting that statement with an obvious opinion. The Big East would have had a NC game rep had WVU not choked two years ago and were next in line after Texas this year. Even if they had 10 or 12 teams they weren't moving ahead of Texas...

The Miami/FSU game this year was the most watched college football game of all time at one point (until the OSU/Michigan game I think).
Emerald Bowl attendance was over capacity last year.
Miami doesn't fill up their own stadium due to a city that doesn't give a shit an a 10K undergrad student body, of course they aren't going to fill their allotment of tickets to a non-conference thanksgiving weekend game against an unranked opponent 3 hours away.
Pretty sure the FSU and even UCF tickets sold out, though, fwiw.
And if the Big East had 12 teams they would have a conference championship game and instantly gain credibility. What you're saying just means they've had one standout team per year and are more prestigious than the WAC, which I'm not disputing.

Pretty sure this just is not true, but I could be wrong.

I have no idea if that number is true... just what was said on that Miami board.
And the Emerald Bowl was sold out because it was less than five miles from Cal's campus at AT&T park!
http://stats.nesn.com/cfb/preview.asp?g=200812270059&e=2008_18_0059&home=59&vis=11
Says they only used half of their allotment and Cal fans snatched up the rest
Quote : | "The Bears traversed the Bay Bridge repeatedly this week, going from a hotel in the city to their regular practice fields in Berkeley to prepare for their sixth straight bowl appearance under coach Jeff Tedford. Yet Tedford doesn't see a huge advantage in being home, aside from a free trip to Alcatraz and the support of Cal's fans, who snapped up every available ticket - including roughly half of Miami's allotment. shhhhhhhh
But yeah if Miami took half their allotment in a lower tier bowl across the country in a 7-5 year I highly doubt that they weren't sending decent crowds to bowls in their big east domination years, especially with what was likely a high contingency of bandwagoners across the country.

^You are probably the same kind of person that says its ok for FSU to run off the only football coach they know and has won two fucking national championships.
I hope FSU beats the fuck out of them in the bowl and then proceeds to lose every game but UNC next year under Jimbo for running out a legend. 12/8/2009 1:12:26 AM |

obviously a good move on the gator bowl's part
great chance for bobby to go out against the team he began making his name with
i see nothing wrong with this
^^ why do you show so much angst over this move?
Isnt the goal of a bowl game to line the pockets of TV & organizers?

What are you even talking about? You're making zero sense, I said nothing that would even remotely suggest that that's how I feel. I think he should be allowed to coach FSU until he no longer wants to. But I also think his just having his pick of a bowl game is kind of fucked up. There are 3 or 4 teams that worked harder and won way more games that just have to take a back seat because he said so. This isn't comparable to NCSU getting Gator over UMD with a slightly better record. This is 9-3 and 8-4 vs. 6-6. Hell, they are going to a better bowl than the team that won their division. I understand that it makes financial sense for the Gator Bowl, I'm not disputing that.

Because I attend one of the three or four schools relegated to worse bowls because of the whim of an ole ball coach?12/8/2009 8:23:53 PM |

Orange Bowl Region (8) Wisconsin (29) at (1) Cincinnati (4) (7) Clemson (28) at (2) Boise State (5) (6) USC (21) at (3) Penn State (12) (5) Miami (20) at (4) Central Michigan (13) Easily the marquee matchup of the first round would be USC traveling to Happy Valley to play Penn State in probably some very un-Southern California-type weather.
Fiesta Bowl Region (8) Northwestern (31) at (1) Texas (2) (7) Stanford (26) at (2) Alabama-Florida Loser (7) (6) Oklahoma State (23) at (3) Iowa (10) (5) Pittsburgh (18) at (4) LSU (15)
Rose Bowl Region (8) Arizona (30) at (1) TCU (3) (7) Utah (27) at (2) Oregon (6) (6) California (22) at (3) Georgia Tech (11) (5) Oregon State (19) at (4) Virginia Tech (14)
In this format, the first two rounds would be at home sites, with the first round the week after Thanksgiving, then after a one-week break (in part to account for finals and in part to allow for schools to more easily make arrangements) the second round would be played on the week after the Heisman Trophy presentation. First round losers along with schools that failed to make the 32-team field would play in the lower tier bowls, with the higher-seeded first round losers getting the better of those bowl games. Second round losers would play in one of the top four non-BCS Bowl games: The two highest seeded second round losers would play in the Cotton Bowl, the next two highest would play in the Capital One Bowl, the two highest after that would play in the Chick-Fil-A (Peach) Bowl and the two lowest seeded second round losers would play in the Holiday Bowl. Each of those four bowl games, along with what would be the top Bowl games for first round losers (Gator, Outback, Liberty and Independence Bowls) would be in a rotation that would every few years play host to one of the two national semifinal games in addition to their regular bowl game." |
Bowls are about 1 thing and one thing only - money. A decisive national champion doesn't sell tickets for Bowl promoters.
Something like you describe wouldn't work because you couldn't expect fans to travel that many times so close together. The majority of bowls would end up making a lot less money. The only way a playoff with over a couple of teams would work well is with additional games at the teams' stadiums like in the pretty much all other football leagues. Even with a 2 + 1 format, the fans of the teams in the national championship would have to travel once the 1st week of Dec to a conf championship game (assuming they come from a conf with a championship), again a week or two later to a 1st round game, and again in early Jan to a championship game. Most fans would only be able to go to 1 or 2 of the games at most. Look how much even the conference championship games have changed how fan bases travel to Bowl games.
