My aunt is pretty racist, and she calls black people democrats. So basically anything can be used as a racial slur if you mean it to be one.

But you gotta be pretty racist yourself to assume that everyone using the word thug is referring to all black people. If you automatically assume the worst in people, you're absolutely no better than the people whose behavior you are condemning. Then again, the people that are saying this are pretty consistently the most racist people that post on this website, so it's not like I'm surprised. It's not like you're going to get anything resembling a reasonable thought about race relations from people like BlackJesus anyway.

At Penn State they took to the streets to turn over a news van, tear down light poles, turn over garbage cans, and clashed with cops when they started getting pepper sprayed. In Ferguson and Baltimore people turned to breaking into private businesses to steal stuff.

It would be interesting to see if the word thug is brought out in cases where the rioting was limited to burning things in the streets, tearing up public property, and throwing stuff at police and police cars. I know if I've ever had the thought to use the word thug in these situations, it is in describing someone who isn't protesting but has broken into businesses to rob and steal.
