I play both, but I took piano lessons growing up. Since I new all the music theory and shit like that it was easier for me to learn how to play guitar.

I play both the guitar and piano. Both are easy to learn the basics if you have a background in music. If you want something that's fun to play though pick up an acoustic guitar cause you can take it places, it's harder to take a piano around.

However, learning the piano can help you a lot to learn other instruments.

Well I also can do some basics in the banjo and harmonica.

But I mostly stick to piano and guitar.

I played the handbells there for a good bit too.

Now if only I could split myself into 4 people I could have a band just within myself.

When I started in music I started on the trombone and got pretty good to wear i was always in the top5 and than i decided to pick up bass guitar to play in the middle school jazz band. Since the trombone and bass are in the same clef I just had to learn where the notes were on the bass to play it.

Than came the upright bass which has got to be one of the hardest instruments I have ever tried to play.

I picked up acoustic guitar my freshman year and taught myself which was another adventure since I tend to fat finger the strings instead of using the tips.

If I was to split myself up to the instruments I can play I can maybe start a ska/folk band

Hardest instrument I ever attempted was the oboe. It didn't last long.

"Guitar" is such a generic choice.

What KIND of guitar?

Electric? Acoustic?

Blues?
Rock?
Metal?
Folk?
Jazz?
Classical?
Flamenco?

These are all important questions.

im trying to learn guitar now and there are some difficulties to it even though ive played music before on violins and saxophone, but my big hands have a problem of hitting strings i dont want.

piano is a fun instrument if you know how to play the good stuff, dualing pianos is one of the cooler parts of seville quarter down here in pensacola.

Guitar. Get a [real] piano and suddenly a lot fewer people will show up when it comes time to move houses/apartments.

I know I've already posted in this...

But I think if you don't have any background in music you should learn the piano first. Once you learn the piano any other instrument you learn will be much easier.

Chicks love guys that can play the piano and acoustic guitar just the same.

Gotta build up those calluses.

Or in the case of piano, I just have to avoid arthritis setting in by age 30. Robert Schumann ruined his fingers that way. He'd tie strings to his fingers fed through pulleys with weights and practice every day that way to build strength. That kinda backfired on him, so he turn to composing.

Drums are the most fun to play, but if you're intent on piano or guitar go with guitar. I'd recommend bass since everyone and their dog plays guitar. If you want to play in a band, even if that's not your goal now, there will be a lot more opportunities.

People seem to think that playing piano is the ultimate instrument to learn music with and I don't know why. It more important that whatever you pick you actually learn how to read music. Which is probably why it's assumed that piano is what you should learn on, lots of folks pick up a guitar and learn a few songs but never learn how to read.

You can play bass, accompaniment and lead all at once on a piano. The only limit is really your own dexterity.

i play piano, and i cannot play guitar past a few chords. it's hard for me to make the transition. piano is so amazing to me. pretty much play everyday. they are both appealing, and to master either one is a feat.

PIANO.

While there is a little more involved in learning to play the piano, there isn't the physical pain that's involved with guitar. As someone who took lessons in both, but eventually devoted herself to piano (for 14 YEARS worth of lessons).
