i want to reiterate getting AGQ since my rec on page 1. you can get some now, and if there's a pullback, average in lower.

Which site do most of you guys use?

I'm looking for something easy to use, easy deposting/withdrawing of money, and real time quotes.

I'm planning on throwing my tax return online and get into the trading game.

I'll second Scottrade for a basic portfolio, but its not the greatest for rapid fire day trading, if thats more your thing

On days I'm not busy, I wanna be able to sit here all morning and afternoon and play around with some day trading.

What makes ST better over the other sites?

Also, how do most of you fund your account?

Can I just link it to my checking account and to a wire transfer?

Also, I am really liking PEIX,

It has a low per-trade cost, but this only really matters if you're trading often and in relatively small amounts...$7 vs $20 isn't a big deal on a $15,000 trade, and it isn't a big deal if you're only making a few trades a month

It also doesn't have any monthly or annual maittenance charges, so you can leave it alone for a while and not get docked continually with fees

They have a million offices, which is nice if you ever have to settle a beef in person, which I did once when they accused me of naked shorting

The bad thing is that they don't have a good option for your cash that isn't tied up in stocks, bonds, cds, etc...it just kinda sits there in a very low interest account. So its a good idea to keep no more than 10 percent of your assets in cash at any given time, unless the market is just getting absolutely assfucked at the time

Overall, great for most people, but if I was a full time trader who did this for a living, I would probably find it a little limited

How do you fund your account on there? I have looked at the site and can't seem to find the options.

You can do it straight from savings or checking

If you have an offshore account, I found a way where you can circumvent the penalty from transfering Euros or Pounds into USD....its a lengthy process, so pm me if its relevant to you

Not right now, I basically just want to get money on there as easy as possible.

If I can transfer it from my existing checking account thats awesome.

Most of their software won't even let you do something that isn't valid, so how did this happen?

You could look into TradeKing as well. The last time I used it the commissions were lower than ST but they didn't have a desktop client (when I left early last year they told me they were working on it).

IMHO, and this is what I read in multiple places and some folks here probably advised the same, you 1) simply can't just start day trading and be any good at it and #2) If your roll is somewhat small (the size of a tax return small) then you're already at a disadvantage because of the commission.

You're going to have to wait until the funds clear regardless of how much it is.

I, too, use Scottrade. I have 2 accounts with them, with a 3rd account that belongs to my dad that I trade for him (and a 4th likely on the way...dad's probably going to open a 2nd account for me to run for him).

Speaking of day trading

http://garyscommonsense.blogspot.com/2010/01/throw-those-daily-charts-in-trash.html

Sums up how I've been treating the market over the past few weeks. I did put on a single contract risk reversal play on GLD more as a way to do something in this lame market. Otherwise, I'm just sitting and waiting for something to happen.

yeah, i'm pretty much sitting and waiting for a pullback, or some development that creates a stir.

i did buy $10k worth of BNI in one of my accounts, and $10k more in my dad's account. Should make a few bucks on the BRK merger, then hopefully some more on what I think will be a BRK pop on the 50:1 split.

I haven't been rolling the bones on stuff like SSO lately, though.

Can someone explain "Minority Interest" to me as listed in a company's balance sheet within the Liabilities part. Is this the amount a company has invested in a subsidiary or is it an amount another company has invested within the target company.

For example in Verizon's balance sheet there is a "Minority Interst" of 41.3 Million Dollars.

today was the opposite. last week a couple of days they sold off a bunch of equities as well as metals and other commodities. today they're doing the opposite. i will likely be setting some trailing stops today and tomorrow.

Quote :
"Minority interest in business is an accounting concept that refers to the portion of a subsidiary corporation's stock that is not owned by the parent corporation. The magnitude of the minority interest in the subsidiary company is always less than 50% of outstanding shares, else the corporation would cease to be a subsidiary of the parent.[1] Minority interest belongs to other investors and is reported on the consolidated balance sheet of the owning company to reflect the claim on assets belonging to other, non-controlling shareholders. Also, minority interest is reported on the consolidated income statement as a share of profit belonging to minority shareholders.

Minority interest is an integral part of the enterprise value of a company. The converse concept is an associate company.

Under IFRS and US GAAP, the minority interest is reported in the equity section of the consolidated balance sheet."

I dodged a bullet and sold $2k of C at 3.46 (trading @ 3.34 now). I just picked up more shares of AXP in exchange, expecting good things in their earnings report from some feedback out in the retail field.

Wow, C closed at 3.27 today. AXP reported and nearly trippled quarterly profit, beat expectations .59 over .57, loan-loss provisions down 47%, cardmember spending up 8%. After hours action has the stock at a pitiful $41.17, down $0.99 (-2.35%).

Could someone clue Obama on the huge loss that political stunt has now dealt to American investments and stock market sentiment.

Obama-pwnt on America's Citigroup investment.

Oh the humanity of a 2 day 4% correction after a fraudulent accounting, 0% Fed rate, stimulus, and probably altogether illegal or question activity induced 50% rally off of the March abyss.
