Quote : | ""I can tell you, if a Democratic leader said such a thing, they would not be allowed to keep their position," Sen. Mary L. Landrieu, Louisiana Democrat, said of Mr. Lott in 2002.
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Mr. Reid at the time denounced Mr. Lott's remarks as "not good for America; it's repugnant." When Mr. Lott resigned his leadership post, Mr. Reid observed that the Mississippi Republican "had no alternative" because he had "dug himself a hole." " |

I would like to add that Barack is clean and articulate, too. By the way, I learned to speak Indian so I can go to Dunkin' Donuts and 7-Eleven.

REALLY??? Then what was the purpose of this exchange?

I just don't get why they should care about what he said.
Sure, he didn't use the preferred nomenclature (dude), but his sentiment wasn't wrong. It's certainly no worse than the "honest injun" line Steele gave the other week; and no one shat their pants over that. 1/12/2010 6:38:10 PM |

right, but the President is not a racially defined entity. The President doesn't exist specifically to promote the welfare of blacks in Congress...and while I don't think Reid will be showing up at any Klan rallies anytime soon, and it's not like he said "How'd we end up with a dirty nigger as President" or anything, I think that what he said is deserving of rebuke, and of all organizations on the entire Earth, the CBC should be just about the last to defend him. 1/12/2010 6:39:40 PM |

^^ and Biden said almost the exact same thing early on in the primary race.
sweet jesus people get over it.
^ yea i dunno. i mean they certainly didn't have to come out and defend him, but they're looking at it from a political standpoint. "unified" looks much better, especially when he's got a tough race in november

I don't think he should be crucified or anything...but I certainly don't think the CBC should be jumping up to come to his aid.
and it's not really the nomenclature that's problematic, Dude...it's the implication that "he's a suitable candidate because he's only a little bit black."

Of course...that's my problem with it. It's politics at the expense of principle.

^^ My point is that the wording in question shows Reid's outdated way of thinking.
And isn't anyone in the MSM or here concerned about these outrageous statements?
A few years ago, this guy [Barack Obama] would have been getting us coffee.
The only reason you [Ted Kennedy] are endorsing him [Obama] is because he's black. Let's just be clear

I get that. And I'll halfway agree with you on the point of the CBC jumping to the defense. They'd never ever jump to the defense of a Republican, regardless of what was said.
But given the average American, Reid was correct, as long as you make the assumption that he meant "he's a(n) [electable] candidate because he's only a little bit black."1/12/2010 7:00:17 PM |

do you really think that the phrase "negro dialect" is devoid of any judgment, one way or the other, as to the "goodness" of such speech patterns? Pointing out a "negro dialect" is almost explicitly prejudiced, as few people point it out as a sign of high intellect.
