At that point, I said enough was enough...we'd just have to go shorthanded--I'm not taking him with us, and we'd move forward with him being kicked out."

Some people never change.

I don't know, I think that a few months of boot camp isn't going to fully negate 18 years of shitty upbringing. It's a sad story when someone with so much potential fucks it away so badly, but what're you gonna do with someone who's had 3 instances of fraud/larceny (that he's been caught red-handed in) in the last 2 years? Numerous people talking to him extensively on several occasions didn't work. Reducing him in rank and putting him on restriction didn't work. Extra duty didn't work.

Unfortunately, the one tool that might be able to do some good is no longer available:

He'd be a perfect candidate for it...someone who genuinely wants to succeed, and isn't just frustrated and wanting to get out.

yea we recently got rid of some guys due to some ridiculous it. stealing from marines, the office, drinking incidents, lying over and over, somehow having a stroke but fine? him and his wife are another story.....fucking insane. the worst thing was he acted like nothing was wrong.

we had a guy go to the docs with suicidal ideations right before our deployment and so we are separating him from the corps. sucks for him but he chose that route. he played that card at the worst moment because he didn't want to go.

there was a marine at hmlat-303 that was a shitbag, alcoholic and no one would be his roommate. this new kid was going through and said he would help him get on the wagon and straighten up. the guy hid a bottle of booze in the room, so the kid poured it out and threw it away. the guy got back to the room drunk, got mad and took a tire iron to the kids head while he slept. the room was like in the movies. he tried to jump off the 3rd floor and kill himself but just broke his back and bones. that guy is spending the rest of his life in a military brig. NOTHING like prisons in civilian world, no chance of parole. they tried to get death for him but didn't go. that's the worst life u could imagine but he probably isn't getting butt raped or shanked.

The reason for all of this is because the military is our society. its not elite guys and top notch people. its everyday normal people. the officers have college degrees and they still fuck up. how is an air force general, the head of the sexual assault prevention for DOD going to sexually harass his fucking aid!
They are normal people put in extraordinary situations and sometimes some come out on top. that's ur average marine getting a medal of honor for jumping on a grenade or being so good at fixing my aircraft that he eventually becomes the master gunnery sergeant of a unit or a warrant officer.
The elite people u hear about become seals and shit but mostly they go to the corporate world and run this country, they join congress and do one term and get their retirement for life.
The people at the bottom who join tend to be the ones who make it because they have to and then get thrown out for indiscretions. or its people taking advantage of their power and getting caught.
You will see the extreme good and bad when u talk about war. WW2 didn't have the media coverage like now and I will tell u, those marines and soldiers raped and pillaged towns. we killed anyone who we thought was bad, we made sure we were safe, and we did what we wanted to get the job done. We massacred japan because they wouldn't quit. The Taliban wont quit ever but we pussy foot around and that's why nothing is working in afg.
You cant tell these men and women to kill bad guys and then tie one hand behind their back and then let bad guys in behind them.
When these guys give their lives and the best years of their lives to do this work and when they look back and all it was, was a paycheck.....what would u do if u knew u were at a dead end job and don't have the upbringing and foundation of morals (besides bootcamp)....they are still just 18-23 and u wonder why they break rules and do stupid shit.....
I hate the stupid shit they do, but really....what were most of us doing those years of our lives.

sorry for the ramble. cant sleep
