Thats no different then being a rubber necker on the freeway. I'm sure all of you watched the 9/11 videos repeatedly. This is more curiosity than anything because its not every day you see a Luger accident. Same rule applies to watching automotive racing. The 'crash' brings in more viewers and if there is an epic crash people will go out of their way to view it. 2/12/2010 4:55:43 PM

I can almost understand people looking for footage of Saddam's hanging, because there are people who were directly affected by Saddam's actions who might gain some closure by seeing his end.
No one who is searching for this video gains anything by seeing the death of a kid they never knew.

I'm sure none of us on TWW cared about closure when it came to Saddam but I'm sure most of us watched the video.
In terms of the accident sometimes you don't fully appreciate the dangers of a sport or morning the loss of an athlete you know nothing about until you see their final moments. 2/12/2010 5:00:29 PM

Yeah, and the vast majority of the people searching for the video were NOT affected by his actions.

I sure as hell didn't watch the Saddam video.
And if you need to see someone die to appreciate the fact that sliding completely unprotected on ice at 90 MPH is lethally dangerous, I don't know what to say to you. 2/12/2010 5:03:00 PM

What can I say, i don't watch the sport to be able to appreciate its dangers/athletic abilities.

i am kind of wondering why there were big metal poles there in the first place, since obviously it was possible for a luge to fly off like that
but maybe i'm just being a mmqb 2/12/2010 5:21:22 PM

Since it's the runout portion of the course and it doubles back, I assume it's a support for the viewing structure for the middle part of the course.
Also (and not that it matters, really), the start that's marked on that map is the bob start. The luge start would be one of the wider portions marked after the first or second turn. ] 2/12/2010 5:23:29 PM

so any word as to what action they will take regarding the track.
considering that it didnt look like he did anythig wrong i cant see how anyone could ride that track knowing that no matter how much padding you put on the poles you'd still be screwed. 2/12/2010 5:46:34 PM

Sure they do. It serves to remind us all of how fragile life really is. I mean, you can tell me someone died in a violent way, but that doesn't have an impact on me. 2/12/2010 5:56:29 PM

man, the more I watch the video the more I cannot understand HOW IN THE HELL THE TRACK DESIGNERS THOUGHT IT WAS REASONABLE TO LEAVE THOSE POLES EXPOSED LIKE THAT?

I don't know enough about luging to know how bad he screwed up. Only a real luger would be able to tell you. That said, it is dangerous. I mean any sport in which you go almost 90 mph fully exposed is deadly.
I wish his family the best. 2/12/2010 6:20:02 PM

They've been racing at Whistler for more than two years and the incidence of crashes hasn't been any higher than any other new track. That's not to say that the wall couldn't be extended there, but it hasn't been an issue.] 2/12/2010 7:29:32 PM

A common sense question is how much can they be padded?
You could put six inches of padding on those things and they'd still kill you at 90 MPH. 2/12/2010 7:40:15 PM

Slamming into the ceiling isn't a good solution, either.
They'll probably extend the retaining walls by a foot or so coming out of the turn, and perhaps another ten or fifteen feet down the track. 2/12/2010 8:37:39 PM
