No, he's not an alarmist. He bases everything off of available data from peer-reviewed journals. Really straight-forward, concepts-oriented class. Teaches you how ocean circulation controls the climate, amongst about a thousand other important factors.

Here's a response I sent to my uncle after he complained about how the last 10-day cold spell in central florida was evidence against global warming:

The theory of global warming has mounting evidence supporting and refuting it released on a daily basis. Allow me to give you some background, which took me a semester to learn completely: The oceans, through air/sea turbulence, help to sequester a vast majority of the atmospheric CO2 over time. CO2 is pulled down into the oceans via bottom water formation in the North Atlantic. This occurs as surface waters are cooled by Arctic ice, causing the water to sink and trap the CO2 within the water. However, as ocean surface temperatures increase with increasing trends in greenhouse gas levels (these gases include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, water vapor, sulfur oxides, etc.), the amount of sea ice created seasonally in the North Atlantic decreases (from the video: no, one year of no change in sea ice formation is not an indication of a climate recovery or any similar assumption). As the amount of seasonal sea ice decreases due to the increasing sea surface temperatures, the amount of bottom water formation decreases, leaving more CO2 in the atmosphere. This leads to more warming, less sea ice formation, and more CO2 left in the atmosphere, and is the foundation behind the runaway greenhouse effect often talked about in the media. As the ocean absorbs CO2, the CO2 reacts with water (H2O) to form H2CO3, which is a mild acid. This acid is buffered by the presence of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) to some extent. As the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere increases, the partial pressure of CO2 increases, resulting in more of the greenhouse gas being forced into the oceans, increasing the amount of H2CO3, which lowers the pH. As the oceans become more acidic, species such as corals, shellfish, and other organisms begin to struggle, as evidenced by numerous coral bleaching events worldwide. So, in a nutshell, there are detrimental impacts to be experienced from increased CO2 emissions. Will it be end of the world? Likely not. Will we be forced to make unwelcomed changes to our way of life as a result of increased CO2 emissions? Quite possibly. The current administration has had no problem falsifying whatever they need to in order to achieve their goals as quickly as they can. And, though they claim to be "friends of science", their use of illegitimate science and inaccurate interpretation of sound scientific data is a blemish to credible scientists everywhere. I hope this helps explain things a bit, and I would love to outline what I have learned for you in greater detail the next time we visit. As for the cold snap, I'm no meteorologist, so I have no explanation."

My response was based off a portion of what I learned in MEA 573. Good class. I probably learned more in there than any other science class I have taken.

Dr. Eder only taught MEA 130 and his specialty is air quality modeling. He taught part time and worked at the EPA.

Your "make up your damn mind" comment makes me think you have failed to understand the fundamental nature of science.

Science is about observing something, making a guess about why and how that thing works, coming up with a theoretical model based on what you know that explains what you've observed, and testing that model to confirm whether your theory is correct.

By its very nature, science precludes you from "making up your damn mind." Everything you know is just your best current guess, and anything you learn could change it. You might have a really solid guess and a model that works extremely well for a few centuries, then a bunch of people can come along and demonstrate that your model fails utterly under different circumstances. Where would any of us be if physicists just "made up their damn minds" about whether the world works according to classical mechanics or quantum mechanics and went with one or the other rather than taking a nuanced, sometimes indecisive approach while trying to come up with a unified theory?

I listen to Rush Radio and NPR, so yeah...i'm pretty well informed and balanced.

Based on what i've heard, the volume that it was yelled at into the mic, observations from my facebook feed and what it feels like when I walk outside, I can attest that Global Warming is a hoax.

I mean really people? If it was warm enough to melt the icecaps, don't you think it'd be warmer in places further south? But it isn't, it's -12 in Chicago and the last I check, ice doesn't melt at -12.

How many overwhelmingly, abnormally hot days have captivated the media this summer in their reporting? I don't remember, frankly, any. I don't remember a couple days in a row of the media talking about unusually warm days here or there, "which means obviously that global warming is happening," because there haven't been any of these outrageously hot, 100-degree-plus days. The evidence keeps mounting that the pro-global warming people are nothing but a bunch of political hacks.
