Decided to give civ 4 a while before this one comes out as I havent really played much of this series. I really hope things are a bit more realistic in this one. Im sorry but when I've got helicopters losing to guys with handmade grenades something seems a bit fucked up about that. Or one guy with a rifle blowing up 2 tanks I mean come on. 9/6/2010 6:47:07 PM |

^I also reinstalled it on the new machine (just have Civ4Col installed) and ran the Revolution DCM pack. Wow, that makes a big difference. You might want to try that. Really changes the political dynamics with nations splintering off from each other. Kinda like it. Also totally spent the weekend in "One More Turn" mode! 9/6/2010 9:16:25 PM |

i think if you're gonna get that you should get it in store because it comes with some real stuff. All versions no matter where you buy them run via steam, so you wont lose the integration and backup stuff. 9/14/2010 4:37:21 PM |

Played some last night. The City-States def make things more interesting. The combat is much more realistic as well. Cities are much more difficult to take and ranged weapons are extremely important. 9/22/2010 11:56:40 AM |

i only played about an hour last night (lest it wrest my life away from me so soon) but am thoroughly impressed. I had a ruins upgrade my scout to archers - talk about an early game advantage! I was raining hell from above on barbs and city states. as the Iroquois I had bonuses in forests/hills and was a one unit wrecking crew for a good bit of time 9/22/2010 12:42:00 PM |

^Sounds like this is the first really tactical Civ game. Redoing the board to hex plus making each hex hold a max of one unit makes it a lot more strategic. Prior to that military might was accomplished by the Stack of Doom, a pile of 15-20 units just destroying everything in its path. This will be similar, but slower combat than AoE. 9/22/2010 1:47:08 PM |

What has your experience been with the game's performance? I need to buy a new computer to run the game - deciding if I need to shoot for the upper end of the recommended specs or only satisfy the minimum requirements. Probably won't do any other game outside of Civ. 9/22/2010 6:18:09 PM |

I'm running the demo on a laptop with a nVidia 8600M GT and Core 2 Duo 1.7ghz w/ 2gb of ram. It plays fine, but gets a little laggy when the menus pop up. I'm also running it at DX10/11 so I could step down to DX9 and have it run a bit smoother. 9/22/2010 10:17:07 PM |

“slower” is the wrong word. The combat is more face-paced to me than old civ, but still fundamentally different than an RTS.
I generally hate turn based games, but if you like AoE, and have ANY tolerance for turn based games (risk, magic, classic RPGs, etc.), you’ll most likely love Civ V.
I was very skeptical about the changes from the older Civs to Civ 5 (it’s the most different yet), but to me it definitely does the series justice, and is easier to get into than the old games.9/22/2010 11:27:12 PM |

I played more last night. I'm finding not being able to stack units makes attacking cities a pain in the butt. My units are seemingly always in each others way. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but right now it sucks.
Also, the maps seem sort of "crowded." On Civ IV I would go the first 20 or so turns without seeing a soul, and now it seems after the 1st or 2nd turn I get my first encounter. And after that I'm bombarded with City-States and other Civs. I guess it has something to do with my map settings, but it is a little frustrating right now.
But overall, I like it more than Civ IV. 9/23/2010 9:59:35 AM |

Well one nice thing is you can put your catapults and archers futher back which gives you more space. I also like the fact that ships can attack land units that get close the shore and vice versa as opposed to just other ships or pounding cities.
I noticed that too at first but I played maybe 200 turns last night and while it did seem like I ran into a lot of people off the get go the territory seems to expand a lot slower and there was still lots of open space free even at that point in the game. You see a lot of cities pop up at first but those same places dont grow much larger in a lot of cases it seems. 9/23/2010 10:20:10 AM |

Messed with the demo last night, and my copy comes in this evening. Maybe its different in the production version, but is there any way to get a summary of all the special resources you're bringing in? Has any one played the Germans much yet? At least at lower levels, I feel that they're really overpowering with their special ability. With the honor social policy, I was able to build up a massive army of barbarians and basically overrun everything on my continent. When I get through this current playthrough, I'm going to see if this still works at Warlord. 9/27/2010 1:45:51 PM |

I've been playing on normal difficulty and I find myself getting owned if I focus on technology instead of conquest for victory. This is a major improvement on IV, and I especially like the fact that you actually have to surround cities to siege them, as it should be.

Got my full game on Tuesday and loving it so far. Some balance issues and things I've noticed. Enemy AI is usually crap when fighting. Keeps tripping over its own armies. And some of the random shit with city-states makes it really easy. I think I was on Emperor. May have to up the difficulty again and redo. 10/8/2010 3:44:28 PM |

Couple of questions...
- Is it possible to "make" a resource show up? I ask for two reasons.. my people are clamoring for shit that doesn't exist on my continent and I'm not even close to being seaworthy. I also noticed that no iron existed on the continent but then all of the sudden 4 sources showed up near my cities. I know in Civ IV stuff like iron would be "revealed" once you got Iron Working. - What Civs are you guys playing with and liking? 10/21/2010 1:25:24 PM |

Yeah my fave way to mess with the AI is when they attack a city state I just position my army around the whole thing and they basically just sit there getting fired upon but cant actually ever take the city. Cheap I know but helps weaken some of the other armies if Im not going for that type of win. 10/21/2010 2:42:33 PM |

I like Germany and Rome. Germany feels a little cheesy at times though because you get so many units so fast early on that you can overrun just about anyone using barbarian brutes through sheer numbers (I usually seize the entire continent).
As for resources, I think all the luxury ones are on the map from the get-go, but strategic ones don't appear until the appropriate tech is researched. 10/21/2010 5:08:50 PM |

An interesting strategy if you have a lot of cash... build a trieme early and find a new continent that you know you won't be able to go to work on for a while. Hopefully you'll be able to find a militaristic city state in there and feed it as much cash as possible to become allies. This city state ally will end up giving you some units, which could POSSIBLY be used to conquer a city but at least let you further explore unknown territory long after you've maxed out all possible land exploration in your own continent.
Right now I'm crawling a new continent with, as far as I can tell, only 3 city states and no foreign empires. It is very ripe for the taking, but I'm not quite at that naval expedition phase yet. 10/29/2010 12:49:15 PM |

If you use the Greeks, the City-States practically throw themselves at you. At one point I had every City-State on the map as an ally and was using them to supplement my economy and attack other cultures. 10/29/2010 3:56:08 PM |

I am in the early 1500s in an epic sized map at the medium difficulty. This is the first map I've played through to the end, or I will. I started on a continental map, and was able to quickly meet all the major players on this continent. I ended up expanding to control about 1/3 of the map by quickly swallowing up the Arab empire. I waited for a while to go to war and used my advances in science to quickly push my military to the cutting edge. I finally was happy with about 4 artillery pieces and about a dozen riflemen. In Civ4 that is when I would usually pounce, and this time was no exception. I quickly destroyed the French, who were huge. Dublin was a militaristic city-state in the middle of France, so I dropped 1k on them and they allied up. France threw everything they could at the city-state, while I wiped the flanks out, and then pincered their military. After that it was a simple matter to artillery strike the cities and then roll them over with 1-2 riflemen. I almost doubled my cities with that move, but I had to puppet the cities to keep my society from being too unhappy.
After that I quickly wiped out the Chinese, who had about 6 cities, and then I'm pushing towards the last two nations on my continent, Hiawatha and Songhai, who are both kinda large. Either way I still have them bested militarily, as my riflemen are 8 turns from being able to upgrade to infantry, and my artillery can kill just about anything in one shot. So far I am having a lot of fun since the patch. 10/29/2010 4:33:18 PM |
