I don't know how to read the guy (TOB), I just get the feeling that he is not happy with were the team is right now. However it is the spring, and I am sure TOB wants to have low expectations starting out from WPN. 4/14/2010 7:22:20 AM |

Bill Cowher interview from the N&O:
Quote : | "
Former N.C. State linebacker and ex-Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher said Friday that he has a “very good job” as a CBS analyst, but he certainly hasn’t ruled out a return to coaching.
Cowher, who lives in Raleigh, showed up for a spring practice session that was attended by many former players as part of the football program’s alumni weekend. New N.C. State chancellor Randy Woodson also attended and met Cowher at the practice.
With regard to coaching again, Cowher — who hasn’t coached since the 2006 season — says it’s a year-to-year situation.
"I’m very much open minded to it year in and year out,” Cowher said.
Here are some other excerpts from Cowher’s brief meeting with reporters Friday:
Q: How much does it mean to you to come back and see this program and all the young guys and the new guys out here?
A: I’ll tell you, Tom O’Brien, since he’s come here, has done a lot of good things. He’s brought a lot of the alumni back here. ...The fact that the chancellor is here today speaks volumes. I think we’ve got a good young team.
A lot of people get judged by records, it’s something we all know in sports, but we’ve got a quality football coach in Tom O’Brien and the people that leave here and the kids that leave here are really more enriched than when they came. ...I think it’s going to be a good year.
Certainly the quarterback position has got to be stable and it’s pretty wide open in the ACC, but I like the coach they have and the direction they’re going.
Q: On a personal note, how much fun is it for you to be back here?
A: It’s great. It’s amazing how much better these guys think they are than they were when they played. They all get better with age. It’s fun to be around some of the guys and talk about the old games and the old times. That’s the thing that you miss.
You can talk about sports a lot. It’s camaraderie, it’s all the hours you spend together and the time you spend together. The memories that you have are what people can never take away from you.
Q: What kind of place does N.C. State have in your heart?
A: Well, it’s a very special place. Obviously I met my wife here. We both went to school here. We both played sports here. And we decided to come back and make it our home. Regardless of whatever happens with my coaching future, Raleigh will always be my home. That I can say for a fact.
Q: I’ve seen you over at the Murphy Center during the season. Do you and Coach [O’Brien] talk at all during the season, bounce ideas off each other, or anything like that?
A: Only at times. Certainly we stay in touch and I’m here [in Raleigh] Monday through Friday. I’ve got nothing else to do because my job is over come Sunday night. It’s great. I don’t get to see a lot of games because I travel on Saturday, but I do get a chance to watch most of them on TV. And we talk.
Coach [Mike] Archer [N.C. State’s defensive coordinator] coached for me for many years, so I have a little bit of understanding of what he’s doing. We do a little coachspeak now and then." |

The secondary still sucks...like horribly bad.
the Linebackers(Irving, Manning) are ridiculous though...they stop the run so well.
The O line looks good in pass protection, cant do much on run blocking though.
QBs and WR look solid... Walk on Leggett is the real deal at RB, he just doesnt care and runs with authority.
the secondary though...omg...horrible. I feel bad for Bishop, dude gets burned on about every play.
The punter is doing better this year then again he didnt have 11 guys running at him to take his leg off.
overall...C- secondary has to improve and our running game needs to get much better as well.
George Bryan looks like an NFL offensive lineman but can still out run just about anyone that covers him...dude is HUGE. 4/17/2010 3:36:33 PM |

our secondary was having difficulty running down receivers after the catch too... that one 93 yard TD reception by Spencer seemed like someone should have caught him. Is Spencer one of the fastest players? idk... 4/17/2010 4:01:17 PM |

Secondary young as shit. I expect them to do as well as last year, especially with dumbass calling plays. LBs should be better, and I wouldn't expect DL to be better. We are going to have to score a lot of points. 4/17/2010 4:06:41 PM |

no, he runs incredible precise routes and can turn on a dime...that skinny post he runs works everytime because he's always doing fly and out routes and then baits them in.
he's like a marvin harrison type.
the secondary bites wayyyy too hard and doesnt have the recovery speed to catch up. They were so lost. Then I HATE when they start pointing and blaming after they get burnt or miss a tackle(which happened a LOT with the safeties) 4/17/2010 4:08:30 PM |

It was fun game and a great crowd but on the way home the post game show on 99.9 was talking about the secondary. Mark Thomas said that Glennon was likely the best QB they would face all year with the exception of someone like Terrell Pryor or TJ Yates. HOW THE FUCK has Yates suddenly become an elite QB in the local medias eyes? 4/17/2010 5:13:11 PM |

Secondary wasn't great, but its basically the same from last year. I think we'll see improvement with the recruits coming in in the fall. Crowd was very good even without a whole bunch of promos and TV exposure. That Legget guy looked good at RB though, never even heard of him. 4/17/2010 6:15:44 PM |

i had refrained from judgement so far during the spring
but having a walk on rb looking like the best of the crew seems alarming
maybe i just got spoiled with andre, toney, and eugene
\/ oh definitely washington is going to start, he's a beast. i'm just saying, there seems like there is still some work to be done there.

see it seems like it is hard to come to these hard conclusions about the D when seeing us play us. our passing game is one of our strengths and running game is one of our weaknesses, so the secondary is going to look bad and run d is going to look good. not saying you are wrong, you are prob right, just saying it is hard to tell from the spring game alone.
also, if our crap o-line was doing good in pass protection, that doesnt say much for our brand new d-line.4/17/2010 8:17:08 PM |
JT3bucky All American 23258 Posts user info edit post |
Not really...
To me it seems that the D-line is pretty stout...then again so is our O line...they really didnt do much...either one of them. The reason is because they match up pretty well. The O-line opened up some holes but they closed REALLY quickly thanks to the Linebackers which is by FAR our best part of the defense. We are a passing team only because our secondary sucked so bad...otherwise if it wasnt for the D filling the holes...we might have had a decent day running.
It just sucks we cant all chant UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU again. 4/17/2010 8:20:31 PM |

thanks for the commentary about the game by those of you who went to the Spring Game, I liked reading you guys post about the Spring game highlights ALOT better then the N &O and wral write up about our Spring game..
You guys validated my concerns about our porous secondary and I SOOO hope at least ONE of those incoming recruits for this year is a shut down, play maker type corner like Boise State's Kyle Wilson...one can only hope......!
I wish they would have atleast televised State's spring game for the State fans who live here in teh state of NC, they could have atleast broadcast the game locally for those of us who could not be there in person! 4/18/2010 12:49:55 AM |

^^ I was at the game and I will say our first team defense wasn't as porous as everyone is claiming. They shut the run game down completely and forced the team to throw. You get a little more pressure on the QB and our secondary will be ok. Only giving up 21 points to what could be the most potent passing attack in the ACC isn't so bad (yeah yeah I know RW wasn't there). 4/18/2010 8:10:56 AM |

we also ran the ball probably 65% of the time, maybe 70%
thats why the score isnt much higher...along with some bad passes that got intercepted near the end zone and dropped balls by WRs
it was that bad. 4/18/2010 2:31:16 PM |

def. the best part of our defense. Thats why the run game didnt go anywhere...the holes the O line made were quickly filled by a LB.
they really listen to the new coach too..he has that sideline swagger about him I like to see. He was joking around with Nate and Terrell during timeouts.

Please stop making things up in your attempts to preemptively shit on the defense. According to the BOX SCORE the white team had 17 running plays (this is including QB sacks btw) and attempted 38 passes. So that is running roughly 30% of the time...4/18/2010 10:30:13 PM |

And if the LB's played great, you've got to give some credit to the DL. They're the ones freeing up the LB corp to make plays. 4/18/2010 10:59:31 PM |

My point was that Spencer didn't seem particularly quick on that 93+ yd pass on Saturday and our secondary was having trouble running him down.

no I wasn't at the game, but I didn't need to be to know that he's one of the fastest players on the team. It would be probably be difficult to lead the nation in receiving yards per catch in div. 1 if you weren't fast as shit.
Behind TJ Graham, I'd bet he's probably top 5 or 7 on the team in the 100 yard dash. 4/19/2010 3:21:37 PM |

there were def. more than one drops in the game...a lot...FBs and RBs especially.
as for the 70% maybe it was a little off...but it sure did feel like it...maybe because all we did was sweep passes and screens..which tore us up like it did last year.
nonetheless...the running game isnt doing that great. 4/19/2010 3:35:25 PM |
