Let's no get this wrong though, I don't disagree that the treatment of the animals is absolutely horrible though. I sent the story to my father, who's in radio, and he's been talking about it on the airwaves along the coast. A friend of mine who runs a shelter down here might take some interest too, but she might have her hands full. 3/16/2010 2:36:43 AM |

I think it's pretty hypocritical that you animal lovers really only give a shit about dogs and cats.
When any other animal species is overpopulated, you have no problem going out and blowing the little fuckers away. If something isn't cute and furry, you couldn't care less about its pain and suffering, you just want to see it dead. No one in this thread is talking about how we slaughter cattle, pigs or chickens. No one here is berating bow hunters for sticking a giant arrow through the heart of a deer out in the woods. Those poor deer, *sniff*sniff* I'm tearing up over here.
So how is this any different? Oh, wait, a dog is cute. I forgot. 3/16/2010 8:19:26 AM |

FWIW, I do absolutely hate the way the vast majority of cattle, pigs, chickens and turkeys are treated during their lives and the way they are slaughtered. I also hate the way we have encroached on deer habitats and that their "overpopulation" leads to a lot of them being hit by cars and left to die on the side of the road.
With bow hunting/hunting in general, at the very least the animal is used for meat. It is slightly different than killing an unwanted animal for basically no reason and tossing them into an incinerator.
Still horrible, but slightly less so.
I agree that there are a lot of people out there with bleeding hearts for only the "cute" animals.

I would totally agree if one of the examples, deer, weren't totally awesome, beautiful, and "cute".
Even if those bastards have eaten every attempt at a garden or landscaping I've ever attempted...
For the record, I'm more in line with DeltaBeta here than Sayer. I would promote better conditions and policies for handling corporate "food" animals, but that doesn't mean I want to stop eating them.
^^We need them, to eat them. I agree that they're treated horribly, but the end of the day I still want to see them in my grocery store. I would get behind improving their conditions, but I'm definitely not going to say "stop killing them!" And for the record, your argument is a bad one. "You're stupid, don't try to improve the conditions of one species unless you plan to help them all!" What do you suggest, they stop helping domesticated pet rescues because it's not fair? 3/16/2010 6:19:51 PM |

it's different because they're companion animals moron. they were bred over thousands of years to be our pets. deer, cows, pigs, etc were not.3/19/2010 8:21:58 AM |

^Yea, all of Asia disagrees. It's not like there's no Asian societies with revered ancient dog breeds, some of the original "companion dogs". I'm sure all Asians breed them for food. Can't disagree there. 3/19/2010 8:25:43 PM |

Yeah that's totally what I said
In seriousness though, saying that cats and dogs are companion animals therefore different from cows, pigs, etc is silly. There are plenty of cultures that eat cats and dogs as well as cultures that keep animals we consider meat for pets. A dog isn't intrinsically more valuable than a cow because of where we keep it. They should both be treated with respect to its life.

cows, pigs, horses, dogs, cats, donkeys, chickens...they're all domesticated animals. i'm willing to bet that more people in more countries have dogs & cats as pets than there are people who eat them. cows and chickens weren't bred to be companion animals. just because you can keep it as a pet doesn't make it the same. domesticated =! companion
we all know some azns eat cat or dog, guinea pigs were originally bred as food, etc but these are the exceptions.
you can look this stuff up. cows weren't bred to be by our side. dogs were. dogs were domesticated to help us hunt other animals. we domesticated cows so we wouldn't have to hunt.

It could be argued that dogs and cats "self-domesticated", leaching on the bountiful wastes of humanity and the pests that grain stores attracted. 3/20/2010 12:39:06 AM |

^^^But it's entirely a moot point because it's not our culture.
It's makes absolutely no sense to hold culturally relativistic values against each other when we don't have to--in the Western world, they're our pets. And yea, some Asian cultures are known to use dogs and cats as a form of cheap meat because of overpopulation, but it's not the "majority" opinion, it's not some kind of polar opposite of the opinions being expressed in this thread. So what's your point? Because some poor people in other parts of the worlds are willing to eat Fluffy, we shouldn't care too much for our own?
And as far as this "respect" nonsense, no one said their lives weren't "respected". If you mean that we shouldn't eat them, whatever, I disagree, but just because we're raising them to be eaten doesn't mean we don't "respect" their purpose. If you mean that we should ensure they receive humane treatment and living, then yea, I'd agree with you on that.

Seriously though, se7entythree, you're a giant hypocrite.
Just like I'm a big hypocrite for not eating birds/mammals but chowing down on seafood and dairy as if fish, cows, and chickens don't face horrific abuses as meat/milk/egg providers.
You do what you can. But please don't pretend like a pig is any more deserving of abuse than a dog just because you like to eat pigs and don't like the idea of munching on dog. You might be surprised how good a dog tastes, and then where would you be?
Seriously though, the fact that we trained and domesticated dogs to hunt and do shit for us doesn't preclude us from eating them. Instead, it's the fact that we've built them up to be special non-eatable animals that are different than, say, cows. But ask the Hindu faith about our cow habit, and they'd be pretty outspoken about the fact that we eat their special, non-eatable animals like no tomorrow...
A gajillion times more pain/abuse comes out of your dietary habits than all the sadistic dog abusers in the world combined. Deal with it...without relying on some bullshit about companionship...

Not sure where you got this idea but dog meat is widely and openly sold in Korea, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand from what I saw in those countries. It simply does not have the same stigma as it does in the US. The interesting thing in Korea and Vietnam is you will meet people with pet dogs and when you ask them what they think of dog meat they overwhelmingly say, "Yeah a lot of people eat it and that's their right. I don't eat it but I don't think they should be stopped."

^ Yep, they do not give a flying fuck there from what I can tell. I got my two cats from Greene County. They were going to kill them in an hour and I told them not to and that we'd be there immediately. I just hope it isn't as bad as Robeson son.
What would be nice is if I could personally heartstick the dudes doing it. I'd honestly enjoy it. 5/1/2010 7:28:48 PM |

I just think it would be nice if we had a nice cold stainless steel table with straps for the arms and legs. We could put those dudes on it one by one and use that pole to choke the fuck out of them for a while. I mean really have at it and if they showed any signs of struggling, we could use a baseball bat son. I'd go ahead and slam it into their ribs a bit, break a few. Get them nice and beaten to a pulp. Then I'd sarcastically be like "AWWWW..... AWWWW... POOR DOGGY.... AWWWWW..." and fucking slam a nice large syringe into their chest cavity, purposely missing the heart and creating a more prolonged, pleasant experience for them. 5/1/2010 7:44:59 PM |

It is not suprising at all that the shelter is fucked up the whole place is filled with disease (billboards for VD) and corruption.
this is the way this place works, the $35 million mentioned is all of the property belonging to the tribe including community centers and rental property. http://www.wral.com/news/state/story/7491984/ 5/1/2010 10:34:24 PM |

The dogs needed to be euthanized. It sucks that they went out in pain. I think it takes a certain type of heartlessness to do what these people do though. People who are too emotionally invested wouldn't really cut it, especially long-term. 5/2/2010 12:01:36 AM |

It's more than that. If they get that recognition that opens up a floodgate of federal money and deals the Lumbee tribe would then be entitled to. It's a huge cash cow.5/3/2010 2:59:01 AM |
