What the fuck! This is a no brainer! For a an "all-time best tournament buzzer beater" it has to go to the shot that WINS the tournament.

Winning the tournament is overrated

Everyone slobs on Jordan's shot vs the Cavs...that was to get out of the first round

Dwight Clark's catch wasn't to win the Championship, and neither was Sid Bream's slide

Once you're in the postseason, from an historical perspective, everything is viewed pretty much equally 5-10 years down the road

and Bobby Digital: I'll concede this has not been my strongest arguement

they mainly slob over him jumping up and doing the Air Jordan pose afterwards, as Craig Ehlo falls to the ground and cries

Winning the tournament is overrated in terms of the importance of the play

Joe Carter's HR won the series, but Pucket's and Gibson's are more known and replayed even though they didn't win the series that game

thats because there isnt always a game winning play in the championship game. alot of times it happens through out the playoffs. but when a game winning play happens in the championship game it pulls a little more weight.

Its the only true buzzer beater to win a title game, so its going to be lauded forever

Personally, for Championship game moments, I think the most memorable one wasn't a shot at all

Our run in the '83 tournament was so improbable. It was a team that just kept surviving, people need to see every game in that tourny to understand just how remarkable that buzzer beater was. Because there we were, winning by the skin of our teeth, again, the team that most thought shouldn't even be in the tournament, it fucking magical. That's the team that gives hope to underdog programs in the tournament. I know a lot of people that don't give a shit about sports, but they watch the tournament in hope to see something like that again.

...because of the circumstances surrounding the hits and the immense likability of Pucket and Kirk. I mean, who the fuck is Joe Carter

also no one cares about Toronto

The point was, just because it wins you the championship doesn't automatically put it at the top of the list

UK and Duke are two of the top programs of all time

NC State and Houston are...NC State and Houston

The cache (or lack thereof) of the programs involved makes up for the difference in Elite 8 vs Championship game

Similar to how a Yanks/Sox ALCS is way bigger than a White Sox/Astros world series

Houston was the #1 team that year with Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.

Yes, but historically they're nothing

Almost every team in the title game is a top team that particular year

[Edited on March 15, 2010 at 1:05 PM. Reason : ^ 2 years later...Georgetown lost with Patrick Ewing and David Wingate]

Was Drexler on the 84 team that lost to Georgetown?

He was drafted the year before Jordan, so he must have been drafted in '83

Leading to them taking Bowie the next year because they thought Jordan and Drexler were too similar to co-exist

Both were lucky shots, so the amount of luck involved in both shouldn't weigh into it. Grant Hill said that they ran that play called "Homerun" at the end of every practice, and it only worked like one or two times. Duke was lucky that 1) no one was fronting Laettner and 2) no one was guarding the in-bounds pass, which is what you always do. Rick Pitino still kicks himself for not having his team do those two fundamental things. Instead Grant Hill, who played QB in HS, is able to throw a perfect pass to Laettner, who has no one there to contest the pass. Laettner then dribbles, turns and throws up a shot completing a play that, by their own admission, almost never worked in practice, probably b/c Coach K actually had his players guarding the inbounder and fronting the receiver.

I would've liked to see that game play out if the gay ass refs didn't call that bullshit 5th foul on Mashburn
