1. i have the same question. that guy didn't really seem like a threat.

2. i think that dude is just a supplier, not a gangster. i'm sure we'll learn more though.

3. $1,000.00 in 1920 had the same buying power as $11,425.87 in 2010.

The guy who was shot at the end in his restaurant was Big Jim Colosimo. He didn't want to get into the running liquor and the rest of his gang wanted to, so they killed him.

Below is from wikipedia.

Quote :
"When prohibition went into effect in 1920, Torrio pushed for the gang to enter into bootlegging, but Colosimo refused. In May 1920, Colosimo went out of town to marry his second wife, Dale Winter (he had deserted his first wife). After Colosimo returned to Chicago a week later, Torrio called him and let him know about a shipment arriving at his cafe. When Colosimo appeared at the cafe to wait for its delivery, he was shot and killed. The initial murder suspect was his new wife Dale, but no one was ever arrested for the murder. It was widely believed that Torrio ordered Colosimo's killing so that the gang could enter the lucrative bootlegging business. Torrio reportedly brought in New York colleague, Frankie Yale, to murder Colosimo. Al Capone has also been suspected as Colosimo's assassin.[4]
Colosimo was the first to organize disparate parts of Chicago's crime scene. After his death, his gang was controlled first by John Torrio and then Al Capone. It would become the infamous Chicago Outfit.[5]"

Big Jim Colisimo was the guy that was murdered. In real life, he didn't want to get in the alcohol game IIRC...

Good to know

But in real life, the guy Nucky is based off was 250 pounds and ruled by force, so I don't know how historically accurate the series is trying to be

As always, Alan Sepinwall is able to clear up any confusion.

http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/whats-alan-watching/posts/boardwalk-empire-pilot-the-day-the-drinking-died

Quote :
"The broad strokes:

• Rothstein and Lucky Luciano are running things in New York. They want to buy Nucky's latest shipment of Canadian Club.

• Rothstein then cheats his way to a huge night at one of Nucky's casinos, to the point where Nucky is actually paying Rothstein for the privilege of taking all that whiskey off his hands.

• Johnny Torrio, formerly of New York, is now working in Chicago under Big Jim, and young Al Capone (whose introduction is one of my favorite moments in the pilot, and one that I hope wasn't spoiled for you by pre-show promotion) works as Torrio's driver. Big Jim doesn't want to get into bootlegging, and insists that his people stick to the prostitution business.

• Jimmy Darmody, frustrated at his lack of advancement in Nucky's operation, approaches the similarly frustrated Capone and they decide to rob the Canadian Club after Rothstein's people have taken possession of it, at which point Capone will take it back to Chicago and sell it to Torrio.

• Torrio, eager to get into bootlegging, arranges to take out Big Jim and take his place.

• And because Rothstein assumes the theft was an inside job by Nuck's people, Nucky's now on the hook to him for both the liquor (on top of what Nucky already paid to acquire it) and the gambling money.

All of that is in there, including the bit about Big Jim not wanting to sell liquor, but it's only mentioned briefly by Capone while he chats with Jimmy outside the big meeting. Miss that line of dialogue, and you've pulled the main thread on the whole thing. "

Also this made me

Quote :
"Blink and you might have missed Michael Kenneth Williams' first appearance as Chalky White, who was waiting impatiently to see Nucky. But fret not, "Wire" fans: it may take a few weeks, but Omar coming. "

Yeah, it was good, but I think I had it built up too much. I can see it getting much better and will continue to watch.

Hoping for more carnage in the weeks to come.

Yeah, the whole scene with the FBI guys in the phone booths in the hotel lobby was a very confusing way to introduce all the characters.

The next scene from the roundtable dinner was equally confusing. Especially with Big Jim's accent.

the fbi scene wouldn't have been as bad if the second agent wasn't incompetant and repeated back the correct names

i think the point was to show that there were so many players from all over that the Feds were even having trouble keeping track of who was who and from where. i found that scene to be quite telling of the Feds at that time still being a relatively young government organization with very little experience. but yes, i agree it was in fact confusing.

^ that's an insanely cool story bro. I'm glad you me mentioned it twice on this page...

Maybe you should make a thread to tell us more!

OTR I share the view "was a little underwhelmed due to (probably unreasonably) high expectations, but overall I'm excited about next week".

Pretty much what I was going to respond with has been mentioned.

I didn't get why the chicago boss got shot. But it makes sense now.

The scene with the FBI guy not knowing who was who confused me. But that makes sense now.

The line "I got what I want, why the fuck do we need to talk" got a chuckle out of me. Then later on he bitches at Lucky Luciano for not wanting to have a conversation before making a deal. haha

Loved the view of his slut riding him. Need more of that. Glad to see that shit bag that beat his wife get his ass beat and dumped in the ocean. Didn't know Al Capone would be involved in this series but it was cool to see him at an early age.

Must have had really good ratings for the premiere... but honestly given the amount of marketing they have been doing and HBO's track record of quality original series, they would probably have gotten really high ratings even if it were crap.

FYI for those interested

Quote :
"After 7 million viewers tuned in to see the Jazz Age shenanigans of Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) and his gangster cohorts on Sunday night, HBO has decided to renew "Boardwalk Empire."

From Terence Winter, Martin Scorsese and Mark Wahlberg, "Boardwalk Empire" centers in Atlantic City at the dawn of Prohibition, when the sale of alcohol became illegal.

“All the ingredients aligned for this one, from Mark Wahlberg and Steve Levinson’s initial pitch, to Martin Scorsese’s enormous contributions as director and executive producer, to the genius of Terry Winter and the expertise of Tim Van Patten, to a stellar cast led by Steve Buscemi,” said HBO President Michael Lombardo. “The response from the media and our viewers has been nothing short of amazing.”"

last night's episode was slow, but it's fine because i think it's just setting the stage for greatness deeper in the season. kind of reminds me of the wire in that regard. also, lots of boobies. can't go wrong there.

"• The episode tries to give us a deeper understanding of Jimmy, too, and in keeping with that we get to meet Gretchen Mol as Gillian, who at first seems like a mistress he's gone to after Tommy interrupts Angela's attempt to make love "the French way," but who is revealed to be Jimmy's mom. (She obviously had him very young.)"

Most def not. She jumped up and wrapped her legs around him while wearing a nude outfit.

But...it appears that's been her profession for a hot minute, and most of the time the life of children in that environment is portrayed different...
