"not really. I've been involved with many hispanic families"

Well then allow me to defer to your vast and all-encompassing experience.

If you've got a black skinned guy from Cuba, is he black or hispanic?
If you've got a group of solid-white Peruvians of Italian or German ancestry, are they white or hispanic?

Yeah, most of the Hispanics one runs into in North Carolina are of the type we normally think of: brown-skinned, dark-haired Mexican descendants of couplings between Europeans and indians. But that is not all that exists. Lima, Peru was littered with white people indistinguishable from the American version. Go a ways south and there are large numbers of black people of whom the same could be said.

They should just add Mestizo as a choice and this wouldn't be an issue.

[Edited on March 21, 2010 at 1:23 PM. Reason : And keep the hispanic box, so hispanics could still identify as white or black]

"so your entire problem with the census is that they left a checkbox off? They had native american, they also had a place where you can write in your own race, what the hell is the problem?"

my problem is that they data they collect will be ambiguous at best.

^ now it is separate from the Census. It is called the American Community Survey. At least 2 people I work with received it at roughly the same time as their census form. The ACS is yearly, with recipients selected at random.

^ really cool video and informative.

Also could everyone here stop being a dick and just fill out the damn census. I guarantee you that all your information is already available in the private sector for anyone who wants to pay for it so what's to worry about.

It's important to know these things for a multitude of reasons. Take a sociology course some time.

for one..without information about race as it relates to population and geography, it will be very difficult to stop (or prove there exists) race-based gerrymandering of congressional districts.. voting districts.. school districts.. anything.

If you want federal funds for highways or whatever for your state, or ensure we get representation proportional to our population you will!

(unless you don't live in NC, in which case no worries )

If you don't fill it out, then everyone (including your dumbass) will have to pay for them to come out to your door and bug you.

By filling it out, you are in essence saving yourself and everyone else money. I'm pretty sure this has already been said.

1) confidentiality
2) the response rate of an online survey will almost always favor certain groups over others
3) the last time the census bureau tried to do something modern and "high-tech", the contractor delivered a bad product: http://www.nextgov.com/nextgov/ng_20080403_9574.php

They need to know how many people are in your state to figure out congressional representation...that's actually in the Constitution.

Remember folks, you too can identify as a Confederate Southern American if your family fought against the USA in the Civil War.

Quote :
"Early Census Returns Hold Promise for North Carolina

Early analyses of Census 2010 participation rates are promising for North Carolina.

You can go to the Census 2010 page to see how many of your neighbors have returned their forms. The return rate is very important, as budgets for the next ten years will be weighted by the results of this count. Right now, approximately 67 percent of households have already replied.

North Carolinians should be paying close attention to their results. As of April 14th, 69 percent of households in the state have sent their forms back in. That is already higher than the 66 percent of households that replied in 2000. The fact that North Carolina is trending slightly above the national average is good news. Still, a higher rate of return would mean a lot for our state. North Carolina is one of the states on the edge of gaining an additional seat in Congress. In 2000, Utah mounted and then lost a challenge to wrest a Congressional seat from North Carolina. This time, North Carolina is seen as competing with New Jersey. That is promising, as New Jersey is responding at just 67 percent to date. Some say that Texas could gain as many as four new seats. That promise looks to be endangered by their participation, though. Only 62 percent of households have responded.

There are some significant variations in regional response rates. The counties between Chatham (75 percent) and Buncombe are all recording rates above 70 percent. In Davie County, 75 percent of households have replied. That is good news. By contrast, the Sand Hills are lagging. Only Moore County is above 70 percent. Robeson (61 percent), Hoke (63 percent), Bladen (64 percent) and Scotland Counties (64 percent) are lagging. Wake (71 percent) is edging out Mecklenburg (67 percent)."

The census asked so little data that's it's worthless. A great opportunity wasted. Apparently your race is the only thing that matters to the United States Government.

A great amount of paper wasted as well.

I don't think anyone has ever attempted to gerrymander a congressional district based on nationality but hey, I could be wrong.

Semi-related to the census, we've got a documentary called Gerrymandering playing tomorrow night at Galaxy Cinema at 7:00. Claims to be non-partisan, which shouldn't be too hard given the subject matter. More info at http://www.gerrymanderingmovie.com/ [/spam-a-roo]

Maybe I should've put this in the Virginia Foxx thread

"and how about the questions about race... They go into great detail about what type of asian you are"

what they do? I thought that was one of the biggest issues, asia has like five different races and a persian/arab/chinamen/filipino/hindu are grouped together

Quote :
"They should just add Mestizo as a choice and this wouldn't be an issue."

and I've been saying that for a while, white hispanics hit white, most others hit mestizo, hell mestizo might be higher than asians right now anyway

also I'd like for this country to get past the one drop rule bullshit so people actually are ok with putting mixed race
