Another fun thing to do is go to a restaurant, eat half of your dinner and then put a curly black hair inside the remainder of your dish.

Complain to the manager. They'll comp your meal and invite you back for a free meal.

i did that in January. saving $100 a month plus the extra $$$ for not keeping a cable box plugged in.

- i unplug items in my house that i don't use often. even when it's turned off, keeping something plugged in will keep pumping in electricity.
- if i know i'm going to be gone a few days, i'll lower the heat or raise the AC. no need for the house to be at 70 if i'm not going to be home.
- i have a 2 light rule in my house. only 2 lights on at any given time. especially since it's just me....no need to have every light on.
- when cooking, i'll make a big batch of food and then refrigerate the leftovers for lunch/dinner during the week. saves time and energy in cooking individual meals.
- when grocery shopping, i check out prices between name brand and store brand. store brand is usually cheaper 90% of the time unless the name brand item is on sale.
- i re-use the plastic grocery bags as kitty litter bags when cleaning out the litter box. i also use the plastic grocery bags as bathroom garbage bags.
- bring your lunch everyday instead of going out to eat. my coworkers and i have come up with a plan to only go out one day a week together as a group. the rest of the time we bring our lunch with us to save $$$

Yeah but how about the clutch wear from constant down shifting ? I always 1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2 to every stop. I dont care about clutch wear. I do it because its less boring. I'm not sure it saves enough gas to matter when i have to blip 4 times .

^what you're describing has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. If I'm going 50 down a hill and see a red light ahead I'm leaving the car in 6th gear till around 10-15mph when I put'er in neutral.

In the winter time I open up my window blinds and curtains during the day for the solar warming effect. It's a big enough difference to swing the temp of a bedroom by 5°F easily.

HT 6" sub of the day for lunch saves $$$

I don't have cable or any subscription services besides my cell phone

I have only the cheapest plan so my phone bill is $10 for 300 minutes/mo.

as long as I don't go over, it's all good, so I call and check my used minutes the 2 days prior to my billing cycle ending. I was so good with this, they gave me 60 additional minutes for free and half off on unlimited texting.

So my phone bill is $18 bux a month + taxes and fees.

you can just steal internet from neighbors.

I've already posted 4 in this thread. How many more you want?

-T'stat in winter time is set at 62°. Me and my roommates are cold natured and putting on a sweater or blanket is no biggie.
-I drink a lot of tap water at home
-at work I only drink water from the water cooler
-the only coffee I drink is the free stuff we have at work in the break room.

keep a bottle in your trunk for that extra kick when you go out to get your "cell phone" from your car

-Scrounge for coupons
-Use a piece of dental floss at least twice
-Make your own coffee at home
-Try generic/off-brand products at least once (listerine vs equate mouthwash is a good example) if you like them continue to use them
-Turn OFF cable (haha i know a lot of people won't like this one)
-If you like soda always buy 2 liters AND whats on sale for a dollar
-Cook at home a lot and if you like to eat out eat at 'fresh food' non-tipping places Jasmine is a good example.
-If you like bottle water, use a filter system on your tap
-Buy used if it works

My wife and I add water to almost any kind of non-soda drinks we ever buy.

Good example is the Sobe Life Water on sale this week at Target: 10 for a dollar, with a bogo coupon from the manufacturer, plus target giving a $5 gift card if you buy 10 of them = we got 10 Sobe Life Waters absolutely free.

They have a lot of flavoring in them so we take them and split them 50/50 with tap water with hardly any change in flavor. We each have stainless steel drink containers and we put half of the sobe drink + equivalent amount of water in each of our containers for lunch. Basically turns the 10 sobe life waters we got for free into 20.

Also, NEVER order soft drinks at a restaurant. If you go out twice a week, that's over $200 a year in sodas. Stick with water.

-If you like crystal light, buy the wal-mart (its cheaper and taste the same) and only use 50 or75% of the recommended powder for your mixing.
-Yeah as you have mentioned water ONLY when you eat out.

Your suggestions aren't so much ways to save money as they are rather obvious ways to save money by reducing quality of life. You're not posting anything ground breaking that no one has thought of as a way to save without giving something they want. Everyone knows that soda costs more than water, and everyone knows that it costs more to keep your house at 68 rather than 75. The point of this thread should be give creative options for saving, not the basic premise of "If I don't buy this item, or if I use less of this item, I will save money." That's something everyone already knows.

I didn't read the whole thread so someone probably already mentioned this.

But the biggest money saver is bringing your lunch to work rather than eating out.

Also, when we cook dinner we always make at least double what we are going to eat to provide leftovers for said lunches.

I like to shop for loungewear/casual attire in the children's section of stores because it's cheaper.

Also, a children's-sized portion of food at a restaurant is more than enough for most adults.

Its not the amount of food

Its the fact that you look completely bitchmade ordering it

If you want a kids meal, go to a drive thru, where you can remain in relative anonymity

Why buy more food than you need? Restaurants should just offer reasonable portion sizes.

while that is true, I usually just order the adult portion and plant to only eat half and save the other half for a later lunch or dinner. I know plenty of people already do that, so I know this isn't anything new. Sometimes its cheaper to do that than to order of the kids menu.

jbrick83: keep in mind, for most of the people posting in here, it isn't out of need, its simply out of frugality
