HAHAHA, a fucking slip joint SAK with slick handles and no choil guard, thumb ramp or jimping. He's more likely to hurt himself than the cop with a slipjoint held in such a manner.

I had a 940 with the reverse tanto blade. the axis lock was the best design I've ever encountered for a left-handed person, and the grip fit my hand perfectly. Unfortunately, I lost the knife somehow during my wedding ceremony and didn't want to drop $170 on another one at the time. I think the time has probably come for me to go ahead and get another one though.

^^^ Yeah, they're pretty expensive but well worth the money, especially the S30V variant. I also forgot to mention that I like the Titanium backspacer quite a bit. Davi's actually had a green handled 940 with the S30V blade in stock for $143 btw, which is a good price even after tax obviously. It is probably still there honestly. Some of their blades are pretty massively overpriced and others are actually really good deals. You just have to know what the prices should be before you go in there.

that is a good price, and definitely not a price I would expect from Davi's. I might have to see about getting it. I like my spyderco as a beater pocket knife, but it hasn't held up well to the times I've used it as a bottle opener when tailgating. The Benchmade just looks more rugged IMHO.

OK, I'll play:

I have one of these:

and a big, stainless Ka-Bar:

and I have a couple of multitools and stuff...

but I'll confess that I'm not really a "knife guy" at all.

but I've done my fair share of aviation:

since eleusis kinda-sorta brought it up, where can one get left-handed knives? (with the locks easily operable with the left, and to a lesser extent the pocket clips)

i emailed crkt about a few of theirs (specifically their fulcrum and fire safe knives) and they said they have no left-handed versions

^Ok son, I shall come to Chicago and fly you around son!!

Wait a minute son....

Chicago is one of those cities that doesn't allow knives with blades over 2 inches in length!

I already addressed this son. That isn't carpet, it's a towel covered in crumbs from eating WASA Bread.

Well, for the most part I'd suggest just going with a lock design that is ambidextrous like a back lock or an axis lock. This way you wont have to spend as much money and you wont be as limited in your selection. I prefer Spyderco's thumb hole deployment for numerous reasons and it is ambidextrous as well. For one thing, you're removing material from the knife rather than adding it (Which you would do with a thumb stud), which makes it slightly lighter and I just think the idea makes more sense. I also find that thumb studs (particularly ambidextrous ones) that are sufficiently long can snag in the pocket. I do find it easier to open (Flicking or just regular controlled opening) as long as the deployment hole is the proper size too. Thus I prefer the thumb hole deployment mechanism.

The first two knives I posted (Delica 4 and Endura 4) are both fully ambidextrous. Here are the limited Delica 4's and Endura 4's. If you keep them nice, they should be worth money in time. Pretty much all Spyderco knives are collectible if you keep them long enough and some gain value instantly. The pink Endura is still worth as much as I bought it for and will only go up with time because only 600 were ever made in that configuration and another 600 were made with a combo edge (ie - partially serrated). These limited ones wont be there for long, I'd say in a week or two (Maybe even just a few days) the rest will be sold out on this site because the pricing is good and everybody knows how sharp these things are now. There should be around 900 total being made of each color in the Endura 4's and Delica 4's.

If you want a really high end steel and handle material in a true left handed only design, I suggest the left handed Spyderco Military. The Military is one of the best knives Spyderco makes and you really can't go wrong with it. The liner is thin, but I have NEVER seen one break or even heard of one breaking. The knife is a very, very solid design and they will do any reasonable task you ask them to do. Note that this variant of the Military will be a relatively highly sought after knife as time goes by as well. The Military has a 4" full flat ground S30V blade that's made of 4mm thick stock and it's heat treated perfectly (This is the best steel you're going to find for everyday carry), it has some of the best edge geometry of any knife on the market, excellent G-10 handles (Some of the best G-10 I've seen comes in these Golden Colorado produced Spydercos) and a titanium locking bar. It weighs very little for the size knife you're getting. These always come razor sharp and S30V holds an edge very well, is extremely corrosion resistant, has incredible transverse toughness and a very fine and uniform grain structure. S30V is only made through an incredible process called Crucible Particle Metallurgy. It's not a smelted steel, as the alloy actually cannot be produced through a smelting process. The simplified version of how it's done is that molten steel is sprayed through a nozzle; it atomizes and cools into tiny beads, which are then collected and forged into larger pieces. S30V is one of the only steels on the market that was designed from the beginning to be a knife steel. Most other steels were adapted as knife steels but were not initially designed for that application. This entire knife is produced in the US too btw. The steel, the G-10, everything is US made and then assembled in Golden, CO. I happen to really like that. It's an excellent defensive folding knife as well as an excellent EDC knife and work knife. It will run you $121 at YCS.com, but most other sites will charge around $140+ and locally you may pay even more.

http://yourcornerstore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=734_1971_2007&products_id=8184

Also, everyone owes it to themselves to go to target and snag a Victorinox Cadet (Especially eleusis, cause he needs a bottle opener besides his nice pocket knives!). You'll get it for $17 and sometimes they're as low as $10 if they're on sale. It's just a good thing to have and will prevent you from having to abuse your nicer knife. I consider the Cadet to be one of the best Victorinox SAK's on the market honestly. The Alox handles are just fucking awesome and you can put it on your keychain or just use a lanyard and keep it in your pocket like I do.

Oh and some flight happens today at 2pm son. I will report back on how it goes, possibly with photos. I'm gonna try to fly every other day (Even multiple days in a row) whenever possible so that I can get the vag owners up in the air as soon as possible.

Here are some old pictures of flying around. I don't really have too many photos of regular old flying because I guess I just don't usually care about Cessna 152's and stuff enough to photograph them. But I'm gonna take photos of the Remos GX because it's a damn good aircraft. I couldn't back seat any of the photographed aircraft below for insurance reasons, but I was still flyin 'em son! RIP Nancy Lynn son.

Should I buy the Lone Wolf Knives Loveless City Knife for $60-$65? It's in excellent condition, but does not have the box and papers.

I just don't know what I think about owning a two hand opening knife in 2010.

Well, I'm a fan of Lone Wolf gentleman's knives. That seems to be a lower end Lone Wolf knife, because it's like $70-$80 new from what I can see. If it's in good condition and you like it, I'd say go for it but try to work it down a bit more on the price. I have no experience with the LV-O3 steel it uses but as a gentleman's knife it should be fine and I really like the canvas micarta handles.

Do you like Al Mar knives at all? You might look into an Al Mar Eagle, Hawk or Falcon with the thumbstud. They're similar to that knife in terms of the overall design and they are built well. I really like Al Mar knives. I'll dig up a pic of my SERE 2000 real quick, brb.

Oh dude, that knife is worth buying just for collection purposes. Have you ever seen the Al Mar Shiva in person? That knife is incredible.

The Al Mar Eagle Talon on the bottom is a great knife, although I'd suggest the Ultralight over the Talon.

Here's my SERE 2000 (I changed the "carpet" for y'all btw):

The S2K is probably one of the most solidly built folding production knives you can buy and it comes as sharp as you can get it pretty much. It has a nice shallow bevel and it's got a saber ground 4mm VG-10 blade that is expertly heat treated. It also has full stainless liners that are stupidly thick and open pillar construction with a massive chunk of stainless steel for a spacer at the base. This thing has extreme torsional rigidity, it is NOT going to fail unless you do something absolutely ridiculous. I have heard of quite a few people batoning with these successfully. It's also finished very nicely, every bit of metal in the knife, including the inside of the liners, has been brushed with the exception of the blade tang where it meets the lock. I actually got that knife for $120 (!!!) from Davi's because they sold me a knife that failed and they made it right. They have a policy of no returns, which is very weak, but they don't do that with me because I buy knives there somewhat regularly. I'm telling you, sometimes they have extremely good prices on stuff. As long as you know what it should cost, you can find some serious deals in there.

Damn son, get some higher quality knives son! It's good to have beaters though, I understand that. Some people also just don't really care to spend money on knives. I understand that too.

I guess I just hate Gerber mystery steel. If it were anything good, they'd tell you what it was. Even knives made of 440C tell you that they're made of 440C. It must be lesser quality than 420HC or something, haha. At least snag you some AUS-8 son. That can be had in the $20+ price range and if properly heat treated, it's actually quite a good steel. Al Mar's AUS-8 is actually really nicely done son. I suggest VG-10 or 154CM for someone who can spend $50-$100 on a knife though. If money is less of a concern, I'd pretty much always suggest that you go for S30V son.

There are good "semi-stainless" steels like D2, A2, M4, and ZDP-189, that are available in folding pocket knives. For EDC knives I suggest you stay full stainless though, unless you are regularly cleaning your knives and keeping the blades oiled (I'm talking near daily maintenance and immediate maintenance any time water contacts the blade). Note that if the blade is fully coated in a good coating then you can still go for one of those non-stainless steels but the coating will come off with heavy use and I just like to see the metal honestly. You will get extremely good performance out of high end stainless steels anyway, particularly S30V. It has very high toughness and is about 3 times more corrosion resistant than 154CM (In the testing process you perform to measure corrosion resistance at least).

I had a good flight today son. There was a damn near 80 degree crosswind component and the aircraft is so light (670lbs empty, yes 670lbs) that it is really affected by that shit. My landings weren't the greatest today son, kind of nasty until the last one son. I'm going back up tomorrow morning though son. I'm serious son, I'm going to fly damn near every single day until I've got this shit handled.

I really like the avionics package in this aircraft, although it seems to be a real drain on the electrical system, haha. At idle the push to talk cuts in and out, so if you have the panel and the GPS on and everything you have to give it some power to make radio calls. The handbrake is really weird, but it works so I'm cool with it. I like the electronic mixture control, it makes things simple and the Rotax engine is not bad at all. It starts right up and puts out a good amount of power. This thing accelerates really hard on take-off and it climbs out really well. By the time you've put the throttle to the firewall, you've already got to be rotating. It's surprisingly high performance and a hell of a lot more fun than a Cessna 152 IMO. It actually flies more like an aerobatic aircraft. You only need ~750ft to clear a 50 foot obstacle too son!

The Leek is a good EDC knife, but as usual I'm kind of meh on Kershaw knives. Not that they're bad, they just don't do it for me as much as Spyderco or Benchmade. They are not bad at all though and they usually come sharp as fuck out of the box. What steel does your Leek have son? Oh and buy a Victorinox Cadet ($17 at Target, well worth it as I keep saying!) or a Leatherman Juice S2 or Squirt P4 and keep it on your keychain so you always have something available besides a knife for light prying duty (Use the screwdriver tools for prying with any of those). Also, do not repeat mistake! You can re-grind the blade on your Leek and then re-profile the edge so it has a tip again if you want to, it'll just be a shorter blade obviously. I wouldn't bother to do that with a Leek personally, but it would be a decent learning experience at least. It will be kind of weird looking because of the wharncliffe style blade the Leek has and I'd have to see what it looks like to know if it's really salvageable.

Generally speaking, prying with a folding knife is asking for trouble. Even if you don't damage the blade, expect to tweak the lockup and cause play to develop even with higher end knives.

Because of the vast number of snapped tips and knife prying I hear about...

I HAVE AN ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ALL KNIFE OWNERS:

NEVER USE A KNIFE FOR NON-KNIFE PURPOSES. THAT IS ALL.

Keep in mind that a real knife (ie - a sharp one that slices well) will fuck you up big time if you make a mistake, so try not to pry with a knife for that reason alone, even if you don't care about the knife.

Additionally, i won a RoughRider something-or-another at the Friends of the NRA banquet last night. And a t-shirt and a hat. I think the hat's worth the most.

^ You can't carry an auto knife (OTF or side opening) in NC unless you're a LEO or military and actually performing your duties at the time from my understanding. I could be wrong obviously, but that's been my interpretation of the laws I've read.

Honestly, OTF auto knives are not all they're cracked up to be anyway. I've had them fail before (Benchmade OTFs) and a waved manual knife is actually faster, IF you practice with it. OTF's quite cool though and interesting. Definitely the biggest "wow factor" IMO. Also, assisted opening knives are legal and there's very little difference between that and an auto side opening knife with many designs anyway. The Benchmade Ruckus assisted opener (If you can find one) is one of the best designs of that type actually. It has no neutral area. Even if something obstructs the blade from fully opening, if you remove the obstruction, the blade will then open. The blade has two resting positions with that knife, open and closed. Most assisted openers (And all DAOTF's) will not do this if they hit an obstruction while opening. Another thing to take note of.

^^ Good choices man, I've always really liked the 710 even though D2 isn't my first choice. The handle is similar to my SERE 2000 and that handle shape is excellent in multiple grips.

^^^^ The Wave is a pretty good buy in terms of the tools you get, but the Charge ALX is probably a slightly better buy for ergonomic reasons. A guy named "BluntTruth4u" actually did a really good video comparison of the Charge TTi and the Wave on youtube. Too bad he disappeared because his reviews and tests were really good and he is hilarious because he has a funny, nonchalant attitude. He doesn't buy into hype or anything either, if something that costs less does better he'll tell you. If something costs too much in his opinion, he'll tell you. He'll also tell you why spending additional money is sometimes justified in his opinion. A lot of "reviewers" on youtube don't know what the fuck they're talking about or they simply praise everything they get their hands on and don't really use it and find out what is good and bad about it.

His end conclusion was that the best buy is the Charge ALX. One good thing is that the 420HC blade on that wave has been expertly heat treated and expertly ground. It actually performs very well. The S30V on the Charge TTi is either poorly heat treated or poorly ground because it barely does better in terms of edge retention and it actually does worse with wood (S30V tends to one of the better stainless steels for wood processing). The Charge ALX has a 154CM blade (It's not like the S30V they give you was a huge improvement anyway) and you still get the improved ergonomics of the Charge TTi.

I've heard various claims about what steel Gerber uses. I can believe it's 420HC or worse, but that stuff works for EDC tasks and if you're losing them regularly then I can't really blame you for going with that over something else.
