love the borough. i go there multiple times a week with friends. good place to go after work to hang out or on the weekends if you don't want anything too crazy.
those howdoyouQ's are lethal.
during the week between 5-7 all their apps are half price. i think the food is great.4/11/2010 10:10:50 PM |

eh to each is own. i don't really see it as a gay bar as i've seen/met plenty of straight people there. i think its a spot favorited by gay people but i don't really consider it a "gay" bar. 4/11/2010 10:15:33 PM |

I dunno, it's owned by a lesbian couple as far as i know. It's not officially a gay bar, but everybody that goes there knows it's gay-friendly. (not that there's any issue with that at all)
and I whole-heartedly agree with this:

The Hive can be a pretty great bar during the first half of the week. If Frank or Sean are up there you'll get good music, and the patio is great when it isn't weekend-full and blasting 90s hip-hop.
Really, at either bar, you'll get a separate experience from RTB at about the same price. Hoppy american beers replace belgians. The burgers come with sides automatically at a better price. There's more space, art on the walls, and, yeah ... a great staff.
Additionally, the Bee are good neighbors. Anyone ever makes trouble accidentally coming into Slim's, or throws smokes over the balcony, their task-force gets on it pretty quickly.4/12/2010 3:15:38 AM |

the first time i ever dealt with assholes flicking cigs over the balcony, the hilarious combination of chris powers/sugar put a stop to it...AWESOME
like i said, it's a cool place and it's unfortunate that fratty assholes keep me from going there on a regular basis
BTW, the borough is certainly not owned by a lesbian couple, though that's a hilarious notion 4/12/2010 3:57:54 AM |

I heart the busy bee/hive because of the staff. The crowd can get a little nuts at time, but the music during the week is the tits. Thursday nights are a good night to go in.
I haven't been to Isaac Hunters yet either.
Oh and I do love the Borough, but I have tits and the gays think I'm fabulous. Landmark is pretty chill as well

I checked out Natty's for the first time this Saturday. From what I remember it was a good time, but I had been drinking since 10:30 that morning, so my memory may be a little bit foggy.
I do remember it being a little fratty (but I'm ok with that) 4/12/2010 1:28:36 PM |

when we went to Natty Greene's you could barely walk it was so crowded
but the shuffleboard table was still open
that tells you all you need to know about the crowd there

FUCK Boylan Brewpub or what-the-fuck-ever it's called. Best view in town, worst everything else. Food sucks. Beer sucks. Service sucks. Hell, even the crowd sucks most of the time.
Natty Greene's is good because they brew their own beer and it's actually pretty good. Food is halfway decent. No other business can touch that quality as far as good location, good beer, decent food and an eclectic crowd.
That's what I wish Raleigh could have: A great brewpub. There's nothing out there. Hell, I would even settle for a great brewery. All we have is Big Boss, which is okay, but nowhere near great, beer. 4/12/2010 1:42:14 PM |

There is not a single *great* brewery in the Raleigh area. You go to Asheville, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting an outstanding, world-class brewery. 4/12/2010 1:52:41 PM |

however, if I'm going to watch a game or just chill with the guys, Mission Valley is ftw 4/12/2010 2:25:20 PM |

I like Highland and Pisgah as much as anyone else, but they aren't what I would consider "great" breweries. In general, Asheville is a better beer city than Raleigh though.4/12/2010 2:43:59 PM |

Well I don't want to get off topic too far, but I prefer Lonerider. YOu've already expressed your opinion about their beers, and that's fine.
I'll agree that Raleigh's breweries aren't GREAT, but it's better than some areas.
You can't expect us to have a Bell's or Allagash quality brewery here - the scene is too young and not mature enough yet. 4/12/2010 3:48:29 PM |

I never said Big Boss is awesome or anything, though I do like some of their seasonals/special releases.

haha, according to who? My favorite brewery in the Raleigh area is probably Carolina Brewing Company, as their seasonals are usually quite good if a bit hard to find. They had an anniversary Tripel a few months ago that was awesome. The only brewery in NC that I would consider great is Foothills.

I can see where you're coming from, and to tell you the truth I really don't like Helle's Belle or Angry Angel, and while Bad Penny is good there are like 5 other brown ales I'd rather have at any given time. They do have some special releases/seasonals that are really good but they don't get wide distribution so they only place you can get them is at the brewery or maybe a couple of bars downtown.4/12/2010 3:55:13 PM |

to me, that is a problem, because if you're going to go to the trouble of brewing a delicious seasonal, why not get it out there? then maybe, if the response is good, it can become more than a seasonal.4/12/2010 3:57:48 PM |
