Well since he was already a convicted felon they probably had a DNA sample on file.

he refused to give them a DNA sample but the police followed for a while and eventually picked up a cigarette butt he threw down. yet, another reason people shouldn't smoke

Oh man...I don't smoke, but I left some yellow liquid DNA in the parking lot behind Lincoln Theatre Saturday night. I'll have to remember this if it ever becomes important to conceal.

I saw this thing on TV one time where the cops basically set this guy up to be out partying with two couples that ended up going back to a hotel room (that they paid for the room hence the search/seizure jurisdiction). Both couples pretty much did everything except fuck in the room. They then went outside and left him in the room for a while. The police had hoped he would rub one out in the room and "leave some DNA behind" after being in such a sexually charged situation.

They were bummed out to find he never did jack off in the room, but luckily he blew his nose. I guess one form of DNA is as good as the other. They ended up solving a 10 year old rape & murder case.

None of their tactics were ever called in to question. He voluntarily went to the room and left the sample behind.
