I am thankful that my little girl's name has not been suggested. My wife and I picked it because we thought it would be unique and I hate seeing it become popular. 4/20/2010 2:21:33 PM |

dont name your daughter Lillian, there have been too many of them popping up lately
I like Madison, or Madeline. I like to pair up first and middle names too, for example our daughters name is Lillian Belle, which we just call her Lily Belle. Has a nice ring to it.
What are your grandmother's names? Lillian was my grandmothers name and Belle was my wifes grandmothers middle name (which we didnt know until after we settled on Lillian Belle), made the decision a lot easier 4/20/2010 3:48:51 PM |

^Ahahah--we were going to have a Lillian "Belle." My grandmother's name was Lillian and when I was growing up, my parents would add "Belle" onto my name as a nickname. So, I was Casey Belle for everything, even though my middle name is Nicole. BUT my sister has since claimed the name Lillian, but she's going to make it Lily-Ann instead. 4/20/2010 3:53:42 PM |

Thanks - I forgot that I put that in there. The name is not big yet, but I work with two other people who have named their girls the same name and I am seeing it now in those top name lists. I actually named my daughter after my hometown because it is such a beautiful place.4/20/2010 4:05:59 PM |

i REALLY want to use evelyn. it was my great grandmother's name (she died 2 years ago). the problem is that my sister in law & her husband claimed it first. they just had their first kid, a boy (owen). if they have a girl they'll name her evelyn and call her evey or evee or however you would spell that. my guess is that we'll have our first kid before they have their 2nd, plus they want lots of kids... oh well
i like abigail, but i don't want to name my kid something that can be shortened into something else. 4/20/2010 9:49:09 PM |

they came up with it first. i never even thought of it before then, but once i heard it i thought it would be so awesome to use. i've done a TON of family tree research lately and really want to use family names. she was my only great grandparent and i was fairly close to her. her full name (name at birth) was martha evelyn carmichael. i LOVE that name but it's just not fair for me to steal it. i may have never thought of it on my own anyway...plus they're actually having kids right now. we are not.
we'll use my grandmother's first name (that she doesn't go by) as our daughter's middle name one day. daisy aileen griffin is her name.
another family name i like is cora

There's no such thing as "stealing" a name. What if she never has a daughter?
I get irked by this because of some drama in my family related to this subject. When my mother was pregnant with me she wanted to name me Lily. Then my aunt, who was pregnant at the same time, declared SHE was going to name her baby Lily and it caused all this drama. I was born first, got a different name, and my aunt's baby turned out to be a boy. Now they hate each other all over some dumbass baby name drama llama nonsense. I really don't know why it becomes such a big deal for people.
For the record, I'm glad I was born first and not named Lily 4/20/2010 11:29:39 PM |

i'm not heartbroken or anything. like i said, i probably never would have come up with it had they never mentioned it. i'm not gonna die if i don't name my kid that and i'm not an asshole so i'm just gonna let it go. the poor kid would have too many Vs in her name anyway lol. definitely not looking to start any bullshit either. it's not worth it. 4/20/2010 11:35:47 PM |

My old boss had two daughters - one named Avery, one named Reagan. My brother told everyone he was going to name his daughter Reagan and then the day of the birth, he calls and tells everyone that they named her Makena as if someone in the family was going to get pregnant and have a kid first and steal the name Makena. It was more of his wife's doing because she can be weird at times.4/21/2010 9:17:37 AM |

while I am not a fan of brittany or stephanie, the majority of the ones (with the exception of maybe Jennifer or Amanda) he listed are fairly "timeless" imo and are not that dated. I'd almost rather have one of those than a few i've seen in here or some of the "current" names, as those are the ones that tend to seem dated in 20 years. Not a big deal at all, just my 2 cents.
Anywho, my wife and I have had our first boy and girl (if it works out that way) names picked out for awhile, even before we were married . Noah and Hannah.

i don't understand the need to make your child's name "different" and not like everyone else's. when did this come about?
it's almost as bad as swearing off big sunglasses b/c they are "sorostitute" i just think it's ridiculous.
if you like something....just do it.
i can guarantee you that naming your child a name thats not common will not make your child any more unique.

^ I feel bad because my middle name is something has been in my mom's family for awhile but I don't like it and don't really care to pass it on haha. My mom's great-grandmother was named Rae, then gave Rae to her daughter as a middle name who then passed it on to one of her daughters (my mom's aunt) as a middle name. Since she didn't have kids, her sister (my mom's mom) passed it on to my mom as a middle name who then changed the spelling to the masculine form Ray and gave it to me. They then had my sister...wish they would have waited and passed it on to her so I didn't have to worry about it 4/22/2010 8:30:36 AM |

My wife and I wanted a more unique, less popular name because both of our names were common growing up (Ryan - very popular in the 80s for some reason and Jennifer - always popular). I hated having a class with another Ryan as it always made for confusion who the teacher was talking to. Just as now I have a bro-in law that is named Ryan and it is confusing anytime we're around each other. Obviously in the grand scheme of things it makes no difference, just more of a personal preference.4/22/2010 2:07:33 PM |

I wanted to name my dog Maddie originally, but because it became such a popular name along with Madeline, Madison, etc. I settled on Molly. Then I learned that was popular too, and I gave up and named the other dog Riley after a bastardization of the "O rly?" internet meme.
I'd settle on Callie or Sonia for a girl. 4/22/2010 10:15:56 PM |

I agree with this. My parents were super hippies and gave me a unique name. It's been a pain in my ass the rest of my life. Then my sister came around and they gave her the most white bread, boring name ever. wtf
I think it's important to find a good balance. Just because you don't want to name your kid Elizabeth doesn't mean you have to name them Eccentricity (yes people have actually named their daughters that).4/22/2010 10:31:03 PM |
