I really hate texting. As soon as I get a text, I call the person right back and let them no how much I despise it. Then I address their text.

I love texting because when I'm on the phone it's so awkward to me when you're trying to basically tell them "look, I'm done talking to you and am sick of talking to you OKBYE"

with a text... I bypass that situation and can just not answer and could always use the excuse later that I'm busy (or there's just no awkward ending in general)

How socially awkward do you need to be to not be able to tell people, "Well, I need to go have some work to get done talk to you later *click*"

^ I"m not socially awkward but sometimes I really am just sick of talking to the person

and I hate it when saying goodbye takes like 5 fucking minutes

I would also like to mention I hate talking on the phone in front of other people - another reason why I prefer texting

^ Sounds like you're overly concerned about minor things son.

Don't be worrying about saying goodbye taking five minutes. Maybe the son on the other end is just tryin to be nice son.

I used to do this, but then I turned off texting.

I bet it is terribly annoying to hang out with these people. I hate when you're trying to spend time with someone and they seem captivated by whatever stupid crap is spewing in and out of their phone's screen.

^ Oh dude, I know somebody like that. That's some seriously ridiculous shit. If you ask me to come hang out with you, don't spend the entire time texting if you expect me to ever hang out with you again. It's fucking rude as hell to be honest.

I let them yes usually, but sometimes I let them no too.

As a rule I try to keep non business calls to 3 minutes or less. Avoid talking about the weather and color of their new shoes. Get the important stuff out and get on with it.

I also find that this technique is way more efficient than texting. I can handle things while driving, and usually can get things solved immediately instead of over 15 different texts.

Seems that way. Though IMing was nice because you have a fullsize keyboard. Texting, not so much. And I've even got a phone with a full hw qwerty keyboard--I can't fathom having to do it via numeric keypad.

If I send 5 texts in a day, it's unusual. Most days fall in the 0-3 range. Slightly ironic given that I have an unlmited text plan.

^ I can type on a qwerty phone keypad almost as fast as I can type on a regular old keyboard son.

What I don't like is the non-qwerty keyboards you find sometimes in France and other non-'murican places son.

The best was when I accidentally sent you a pic of me kissing a guy. (I was tipsy and couldn't work my BBM properly--was trying to send the pic to the guy's roommate).

^^ I would be really fucking angry if I came all the way back from Japan and some motherfucker was too busy texting to pay attention to the people he was supposed to be hanging out with.

If you can't put down your phone for a few hours when you're hanging out with people, you have a SERIOUS problem. I would honestly call that an addiction and I think people like that actually need to seek professional help at that point. It actually damages their life when it gets that bad.

that guy has been reprimanded at work for being on his phone too much at work.

i too have followed wolfpackgrrr's strategy on this

This girl I know often pisses me off when I call her, she doesn't pick up, then I get a text like 20 seconds later saying, "what's up?"

I don't mind texting, but when I call you, I have enough to talk about that texting would take too long.

people give me the "hey, let me call you back - click" all the time, even during mid sentence. maybe you should try it.

^ Yeah seriously. It's not hard to get off the phone if you don't suck at it.

^^^ I wouldn't even bother replying to the text. Or I'd reply with something snarky like, "Why can't you pick up your phone? Are you in a movie or something?"

i text much more than i talk.

mostly because either

A. what i need to say literally takes one sentence to complete or is a yes or no answer.
B. what i'm texting about is not important and doesn't require immediate answer. like a joke or some shit.

anything that would take more than say, 3-4 texts or is an important conversation...i call or meet with said person.

most of my conversations on a daily basis lie in either aforementioned A or B.

i also like the idea of keeping in touch with a few people over the span of a few hours without staying on the phone for the whole time

like if a friend is at a concert/show and she texts me whats going on.
i also had a girlfriend text me during parts of her labor (LOL)
it's a neat way of keeping on top of things without one person calling the other and being like....
so i just wanted to say hey...what are you doing?
spend 10 minutes talking about nothing
get back to your day.

i think i would rather span that communication out....i don;t know, i guess it's just a personal preference

i just think (in certain situations) its much easier to text, have some free time to do what you need to do, and then text back at your leisure.

but also this is coming from someone who's weekly planner resembles that of a Jackson Pollock

I probably send about 5 per day. Probably closer to 20 if I wind up in a text conversation with someone. I hate phone calls though... they're just tedious and unnecessary and if you're in public they disturb everyone around you. If my phone rings, I assume it's either my parents or an emergency/something very urgent. If there's someone I need or want to talk to for more than a few sentences, I can talk to them in person and will probably see them at some point during a normal day.

I don't see how someone can possibly send 100+ texts per day, though, unless they're intentionally avoiding seeing their friends in person just so they can text them more... and that seems unlikely. Then again, for teenagers stuck in high school classes (or even college classes), I guess it could become like a portable IM.

Hell, perfect example: I saw some girl in a class last semester with a keyboard-phone, whose text conversation was just layed out for her on the screen, and as the conversation went on, the old texts would scroll up and out of view. That, to me, cannot possibly be considered just "texting", even if that's what it counts as under the phone plan. That's just IM on a small screen.

Texting, to me, is when your phone vibrates, and you pick it up, see the little message icon, hit a button or two to view the new text message, hit "Reply" to send your own, set the phone down, and wait for the next time it vibrates. More isolated, and slower. More like phone email.

^ You mean she was using BlackBerry Messenger (BBM)? Yeah I don't call that texting. And it is not clear from the article, but I don't think they counted those.

But some people actually use texting to have conversations. And when I get sucked into one, I hate the person... why the fuck can't they call me for 30 seconds to say everything that the texting convo took 5 minutes? Fucking idiots. Wasting my time and money. Heck, I would call them for 30 seconds and it would still be way cheaper for me than sending several texts.

How do cell phone plans charge for texting these days? I remember 5 years ago it used to be $texas to text.
