I don't think the power went back on at my place till around 1:30. In other words, that's around when I finally got to sleep

So does anyone know these idiots?

And if you get a chance read WRAL's comments on them.

"I was the first to arrive last night, the transformer station is 100 feet from my front step. I went outside to see if i could find what had exploded, but the smell of burnt hair and flesh were strange on the breeze. When i made it through the trees i saw what i thought was burnt wires and coals falling off one of the transformer cabinets. I realized that the coals were groaning and trying to stand up. The were in extreme shock (no pun intended) and temporarily blind, they were asking for help but couldn't tell me how they had got inside the 12 ft. barbed wire fence. The girl started trying to climb the fence and i threw my shirt over the barbs and helped her down to sit on the ground. My roommates came out and i had them call 911. I went over the fence to see if i could help the other guy out, but he was in bad shape with 3rd degree burns on his arms and hands, not fit to climb anything. I waited with him until the ambulance arrived. These two were too lucky to have survived."

Wow. Idiots. They are lucky to have survived that.

I think it was around 1:30 when my power came back on.

Arc flash ain't no joke. They're lucky they didn't hit one of the higher voltages in that substation.

^^^^ I always wonder if those types of posts are true.

i wouldn't be surprised if it is. that substation is right around at least 3 different apartment complexes and somebody had to be the first on the scene

"A man and woman were severely injured early Monday after scaling a fence surrounding an electrical substation and being shocked by 23,000 volts of electricity, Wake County sheriff's investigators said.

Brian Griffin Rey, 22, of 5500 Edgebury Road, was listed in critical condition at the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine.

Amber Leigh Mills, 21, of 2330-103 Centennial Ridge Way, was also at the burn center in serious condition Monday afternoon.

Investigators said the two climbed over the fence at the Progress Energy substation at 3300 Tryon Road after midnight.

Friends said the two were at a party at a neighboring apartment complex when they disappeared.

Multiple witnesses said they saw two people inside the fence around the substation. After hearing an explosion, several rushed to help and were able to help Mills over the fence.

Others stayed with Rey until medical help arrived.

Mills returned to the apartment, traumatized and badly burned, and took a shower to soothe the burns, friends reported.

Sheriff Donnie Harrison said that although the case is still under investigation, there is evidence that alcohol was a factor in the case. No charges had been filed Monday afternoon.

About 12,000 Progress Energy customers were temporarily without power Monday morning, spokesman Mike Hughes said, and the substation incurred tens of thousands of dollars in damage.

Progress Energy officials said they had no idea why the people would have wanted to get inside the facility.

"The substation is very, very clearly marked. There are more than 30 signs around the perimeter of the substation – in English and Spanish," Hughes said. "It's got an 8-foot-tall fence – the highest foot is barbed wire. Fortunately, to most people that does indicate it's something you need to stay away from.""

they act like no one has ever tried to steal the tens of thousands of dollars worth of copper out of the grounding grid.

I'm betting that the guy is probably wishing he's dead right now. Contacts incidences like this have a tendency to blow apart the persons kneecaps and remove the legs. Having an arc-flash incidence like that happen in front of his face probably would leave him blind too.

people may indeed try to break in to steel copper or whatever but its pretty clear this wasn't the case here

I'm well aware of that, but the linemen specifically said there was nothing to steal when copper theft at substations is a major problem everywhere.
