The thing that gets me with this is that most people use "good" when the proper word is "well". So I feel kinda pretentious saying/writing "well", but my years of policing my grammar in high school won't let me type/say "good".

Random factoid. This is known as the greengrocer's apostrophe.

actually saw this mistake in an Arby's in VA. it was on a sign that had been professionally made for the store, not a hand written one done by an employee...

this one just drives me nuts... it is such a simple rule

I'd like to see "led" used properly with more consistency.

I'm sick of seeing "Drew Brees lead the Saints to victory yesterday" - no, he led them to victory yesterday. Drew Brees will lead the Saints to victory this next week, unless the rest of the team plays with lead feet.

^haha yea, I posted that on the previous page. I have a friend at work here who is a very smart guy; he has his masters in engineering and just overall intelligent and usually pretty well spoken. However, this past week he has been trying to sell some stuff he is getting rid of. In these emails he is sending out to coworkers, his subject is "Items for Sell" and inside he says "I am posting these on craigslist but I will sale them to any of you first if you are interested" I really hope it was some sort of joke but I'm not going to call him out on it :x

In titles, short words (four or fewer letters) like prepositions and articles typically aren't capitalized. Infinitive forms of verbs like that "be" up there are capitalized, though. There's nothing wrong with this one as far as I'm concerned.

Some more words for your consideration:

embarrass, not "embarass"

harass, not "harrass"

vacuum, not "vaccuum"

raccoon, not "racoon"

balloon, not "baloon"

height, not "heighth"

recommend, not "reccommend"

psych, not "sike" or "psyche"

Notice a trend there?

break/brake

In general, I think that errant apostrophes, using the wrong word altogether (to/two/too; their/they're/there, sell/sale), and most of all, using non-words (supposably, irregardless) piss me off more than poor spelling.

[Edited on May 11, 2010 at 1:20 PM. Reason : i guess because most of those things are functional differences that me have to re-read stuff]

I'm utterly dependent on spellcheck now. I don't think I can spell anymore.

Actually, I don't think I've ever been a great speller.

I just avoid using words that I don't know how to spell.

For instance, the folks out there that are struggling with "definitely" should just use "for sure" or "absolutely" or even "totally" instead. But I guess their problem is that they don't know what they don't know. I can appreciate this, as I recently discovered I've been failing at "embarrass" for my entire life. But even then, I probably never realized I was getting it wrong since I would tend towards "humiliate" or "mortify" to try to sound smart n shit.

I got an email from the head of my HOA yesterday that used "wondered" in place of "wandered".

It took a lot of restraint for me not to send a dickhead email.

Eh, 99 times out of 100 it isn't that people on the internet don't know the correct way to use two/to/too but rather that they are typing quickly, without thinking and don't check it to see that they did it.

on topic:
Don't all web browsers have built-in spell check nowadays? When I see misspelled words on the interweb, I blame it on pure fucking laziness more than stupidity. You see that squiggly red line? That means you fucked up!

A lot of the words in this thread aren't even words "educated people" should know. They're words that children should know...
sale/sell
there/they're/their/to/two/too/your/you're
then/than
lose/loose
That shit is 3rd grade material. I can understand how a marginally retarded adult can misspell "guarantee" and "restaurant," but I can't understand how anyone screws up the simple ones I just listed.

off topic:
Quote :
"just as I think every educated person should know calculus.... but they dont. Even simple algebra is hard for some " educated people ""

There's that classic case of the researchers who interviewed a handful of students at a Harvard graduation on simple science literacy. Haahvaaad graduates, the smartest people in the country, our future leaders ... and 90% of them thought it gets warmer in the summer because the earth is closer to the sun than in winter.
You can start a long discussion about the level of science/math literacy in our country with this as a starting point. (Generalizing a lot here) It seems that "smart people" know Shakespeare, know a little Latin, and know a lot of history, but there's almost no consideration paid to their knowledge of science or the natural world. If you can graduate from Harvard and get automatic respect from everyone in the nation but not know why the summer is hotter than winter ... you're not smart in my book.

Just as this thread is about educated people screwing up 3rd grade spelling/grammar, my gripe is about people screwing up 6th grade science.

No, I don't know everything about every subject. I also worked hard to get through school, even though I just ... went to state. But I can remember a lot of the shit I learned in elementary school, such as the difference between there, their, and they're, and why summer is warmer than winter.

If you have trouble with spelling, I understand it. I remember "Hooked on Phonics." I just wanted my students and writers to be smart about using their spell check. It really upset me to see a well-written paper with the occasional weird or wrong word because someone just auto-corrected everything and didn't bother to carefully read their paper afterward.

This is the main reason why I think we're in trouble. Countries like India and China take science VERY seriously and churn out engineers and scientists at astonishing rates. We are used to being on top and everyone here seems to have this attitude that "somebody else will handle that stupid science crap". The religious movement in this country is extremely dangerous for this exact reason. At a time where we need to be pushing more and more people to enter scientific fields, you have a bunch of shit for brains trying to convince people to stay as stupid as possible because some other shit for brains claimed a non-existent skydaddy said to do so in a fucking ancient text.
