How appropriate that this was on the front page of Jezebel today:
http://jezebel.com/5546529/thin-people-shop-at-whole-foods-the-age-of-weight-segregation
Basically, this says that people who can afford to spend more money at a store like Whole Foods are thinner, and people who buy packs of Totino's pizza rolls for super cheap are more likely to become obese. Obesity does have economic factors, but effort is involved; if someone can use coupons and buy in bulk and take the time to find cheap, healthy options, they can get by. It's just that, as with anything economically driven, it's easier if you have more money. 5/24/2010 7:42:38 PM |

There are no fat people in Manhattan. Also if that graphic isolated Manhattan it would be skewed a lot more towards dining out. Eating at your place just recently became the trendy thing to do there. 5/24/2010 7:42:47 PM |

Quote : | "ow it might cost the avg person more to eat healthy agreed; however, with my triple/super double/coupons ways I can eat well very cheaply. It depends if it is a priority. Before I got pregnant, I lost 50 pounds eating from very simple menus and cheap food. I kept a spreadsheet for 2 months looking at cost per meal. I averaged around .80 a serving. The only problem with the strategy I employ is that you cannot be picky and you have to eat what is on sale. " |
Truth. You can eat cheap as hell and healthy, you're just going to end up eating a lots of beans and rice, etc.

That study is ridiculous, if for this alone:
Quote : | "The findings held true for the three highest-priced grocery stores in the Seattle region, including Whole Foods, where an average market basket of food cost between $370 and $420, and obesity rates went no higher than about 12 percent.
By contrast, at the area’s three lowest-priced stores, including Albertsons, the same basket of food cost between $225 and $280, and obesity rates went no lower than about 22 percent." |
If it was literally the same basket of food, then this suggests it has nothing to do with money at all. Rather, people at Albertson's are less likely to buy the healthier food because perhaps they don't know how to prepare it or lack the nutritional education to realize that while a head of broccoli costs the same as a large bag of Doritos, the broccoli is going to keep you fuller longer than Doritos. Or hell, maybe the 40% that shop at Albertson's are just lazy when it comes to cooking and the other 60% are buying the same sort of shit as the people at Whole Foods.5/24/2010 8:48:48 PM |
