"siamese dream is the only album of theirs i own(ed) and listened to from start to finish...like you said its preference though...and I think some of it is generational / age-related...what you say is a very insightful and well done album based on the lyrics might not resonate with me if i'm older and have already gotten that insight from other bands previously...in that case, smashing pumpkins isn't telling me anything new, since i've already heard it from other bands...if that makes any sense"

i get what you're saying, but writing it off just because you've heard similar things from other bands doesn't make a lot of sense to me. i didn't get into that album until i was in college, so by then i had already heard similar messages too. "soma" is basically a break up song, but it's written from the perspective of both sides of the relationship, so even though break up songs had been done a hundred times before, corgan manages to keep it fresh just by the nature of the song itself. that, and he throws in one of the best guitar solos ever. it's the same way with "today." typical "my life sucks" song, but it's still different because the tone of the song is the exact opposite of what it should be.

As a huge fan of the SP, I have no problem admitting Corgan is a douche.

But Gish, Siamese Dream, and Mellon Collie are complete gold. I like a ton of other stuff from them as well but I can never get enough of those 3.

Quote :
"i just dont get how a band like Smashing Pumpkins gets so much acclaim nowadays, when in their own day, they were an afterthought to bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tool, etc"

Not sure how someone could consider the pumpkins an "afterthought" to the other bands mentioned.

First 3 true studio full length albums by the following bands including date and copies recognized via US Billboard / Soundscan that I could find quick via wikipedia:

Nirvana (15 million subtotal)
Bleach (1989) 1 million
Nevermind (1991) 10 million
In Utero (1993) 4 million

Smashing Pumpkins (15 million subtotal)
Gish (1991) 1 million
Siamese Dream (1994) 5 million
Mellon Collie... (1995) 9 million

Alice in Chains (8 million subtotal)
Facelift (1990) 2 million
Dirt (1992) 4 million
S/T (1995) 2 million

Tool (7 million subtotal)
Undertow (1993) 2 million
AEnima (1996) 3 million
Lateralus (2001) 2 million

Now, I can understand that not everyone is going to like them or every other band you were comparing them to. But they were right in the thick of it if you look at the dates, and if you are basing it on albums sold (which I couldn't care less about but I only bring them up since you regarded them as an "afterthought") I don't know how someone could say they were an afterthought.

I mean, I own and love multiple albums by every band you listed, but I'd take SP's first 3 over any other off the list. /shrug

They were an afterthought to me, in the 1990s, when I was listening to pretty much all the other bands I listed, yet didn't care much for Smashing Pumpkins

Let me ask something else...what did yall think of the band Live...cause I fucking HATED them

Live was another band that I could never even attempt to get into because of how much they were overplayed on the radio...I swear to god I've heard "Lightning Crashes" and "I Alone" like 500 times on the radio each...nothing to turn you off to a band like getting them forcefed down your ear canals twice an hour, every hour

To be fair, weren't the releasing new singles from that album for 3 or 4 years?

well that's a bit different than what you said before

they may have released a single from mellon collie in 1998, but adore (which is pretty underrated in my opinion) also came out that year, so they probably only released singles from MC for 2 years and some change.

Nah. as far as i know (and very little research done quick) the album came out in fall of 1995 and the first single was also out that fall. The other singles off that record were released in 1996. Pretty standard run for a CD release + trailing singles.

They may have released something else after that but as ^ pointed out "Adore" promotion started in like spring 1998, so maybe that is what you remember?

so billy played for three hours with some help from james

i saw the original lineup in '96

billy/james/d'arcy/kenny aronoff in '98

the cradle show was before machina came out in '00

billy/james/jimmy/MAdM in '00

and that bullshit at the orange peel

I dont remember. I would assume after. I didn't know Nirvana was supposed to tour with them. They were the headliner and I can't remember who opened for them. Kurt was dead for 2 months by that point. I'm pretty sure we got our tickets a few days before the show. Dude.. that was 16 years ago.

I just remember one of the main reasons I wanted to go that year was because Nirvana was the headliner

But Green Day, L7, George Clinton and A Tribe Called Quest all put on good performances

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds? Not a fan

oh well that explains it...Nirvana was the headliner in 94, but they cancelled a day before Cobain killed himself (or at least before they publicly announced his death), and SP became the new headliner
