BlackDog, quit picking fights, and don't use my quotation in your above post (eye-pleasing design) as some sort of proof for your arguments. Further, I had zero emotional distaste in my comment.
Nobody cares if Apple is "bigger" than Microsoft by some off the wall measuring stick. Get off it. 6/1/2010 12:07:03 AM |

picking fights? I simply quoted what you said. Not everyone loves Apple designs and it's foolish of you to think so. 6/1/2010 12:47:21 AM |

^^ i don't really wish to, um, invest myself too much in this thread, but the market cap is just what investors think it's worth right now. as has been shown regularly in recent years, the market isn't really the best judge of the relative worth of companies. 6/1/2010 7:13:14 AM |

Another blow to MS, perhaps?
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/31/google-said-to-be-moving-away-from-windows-internally-mac-and-l/
More of a blow to MS than anything significant for Apple, i think.

given that there is an estimated one + billion PC's in the world, and windows accounts for approximately 90% of the global PC OS market, I'm not sure that even if all 20k google employees got an apple computer it would be considered even a mild graze, let alone a "blow"
and at the moment, that's all this is - giving employees linux or apple computers. but it is funny to read the prognostications in the comments about how this will cause the collapse of windows worldwide

its not a blow to their market share by any means. That wasn't really what I was implying, I guess I should have worded it better. More of a "Hey, Microsoft isn't the only solution for business". I know Cisco has been doing this for some time. Not sure who else. I know a lot of companies (including the one that acquired the company I work for) are big Microsoft shops that restrict their employees from using any non-MS tools (Windows, IE, Office, etc).

Guidelines for reading Engadget: #1: Turn comments off. #2: Turn comments on when bored and looking for entertainment. #3: Don't participate.
What I would like to see happen long-term is moving away from restricting employees to what tools they can/cannot use...we've gotten to the point that regardless of what OS you're using you can still perform most general office tasks. Of course this doesn't really apply for very specific tools like CAD.

I appreciate the fact that my company will allow you a choice of a Lenovo or Apple laptop and you can run whatever operating system your heart desires. The IT supported option is Lenovo with Windows, of course, but there are plenty of people who choose Linux or OSX. 6/1/2010 11:53:24 PM |

We're the biggest start up on the planet. We meet for 3 hours every morning and talk about all the business, about what's going on everywhere. We're great at figuring out how to divide things up into great teams, and we talk to each other. So what I do all day is meet with teams of people." |

that is an obvious move considering Microsoft has their own search engine (BING)
that is like Intel and AMD playing nice, it's not going to happen. 6/3/2010 6:11:22 PM |

^Chrome isn't an OS from all I can see. It's a Shell + GUI on top of Linux is it not?
And Google is a pretty small company in terms of software licenses
I can tell you that we have plenty of direct competitors who run (and buy) a whole lot of our software to get their actual business done, who are a whole lot larger than google (in terms of licenses, not necessarily in terms of revenue)

yea last I checked Google's OS is only on phones (if that) which is why I said search engines. That is the only competition between MS and Google and the only reason for them to be at ends with each other.
Chrome is a browser not an OS (at least not yet) and if it was an OS what would Linux and Apple have to do with anything?
