it wouldn't be about teaching the owner a lesson. you wouldn't accomplish that by shooting the cat anyway--they still won't "get it", and will just think that you're an asshole...

it sounds like this had been an ongoing problem in this instance, but--if the trooper's story is to be believed--he hadn't confronted the cat's owners before he took matters into his own hands. That, I agree, is fucked up.

I've owned dogs, yet I've still shot plenty of strays on our farm. They chase our cows around, so we make sure that the stray dogs don't cause any harm to our livestock.

If the guy had killed the cat with a baseball bat before removing it from the trap, no one would give a shit. I'm sure he got fired solely for discharging a state-owned firearm.

First off, so he sees a cat and fears for his kids' lives? What a gigantic baby. It's a fucking domestic cat. I don't see that many people getting mauled by domestic cats lately.

Second, he traps the cat. Any person knows that a trapped and cornered animal is probably not going to be very friendly. And then he's shocked when it scratches him?

Third, instead of calling a pet shelter, instead of calling a rescue organization, instead of calling animal control, he shoots a domestic cat in the head.

He deserves what he gets.

Taking it to the shelter wouldn't solve anything. That's the first place the owners would look--they'd get it back, and it would be right back on your car.

I have no problem with this guy shooting the cat--I would've done the same thing, if I'd already tried the sensible, first option of talking with the owner and it didn't work. The problem is that, as best as we can tell, this guy went straight to the last resort.

what he should have done is just tie a rope to the trap and dropped it into a trashcan full of water. then just come back later and open the trap into a trash bag. problem solved

I don't think a person with a cage trap would shoot an animal inside it, because they would destroy the trap and get hit with shrapnel in the process. That's what makes me think it was a springed foot trap. It's also the ideal trap you'd use to catch a bobcat.

What I'm getting at is that if you take his story at face value, he could not have gone to the owners, saying "Keep your cat in your own yard." It was legitimately an unknown animal, and he could rightfully be concerned for the safety of his kids and totally justified in setting a trap (though not justified in shooting the cat without first confronting the owners).

If you think that the "unknown animal" bit was strictly a cover story, and that he knew when he set the trap that the neighbor's cat was the culprit, then it's plausible that he had already taken up this issue with the neighbors, and gotten nowhere, at which point he was justified in smoking the cat...but he probably can't just come out and say that--he thought he'd be better off going with the "unknown animal" thing, and then "Well, it didn't have any tags...probably feral..."
